Molecular Mechanisms of Airway Hyperresponsiveness in a Murine Model of Steroid-Resistant Airway Inflammation [ALLERGY AND OTHER HYPERSENSITIVITIES]: IL-13 and IL-17A, produced mainly by Th2 and Th17 cells, respectively, have an influential role in asthma pathogenesis. We examined the role of IL-13 and IL-17A in mediating airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), lung inflammation, and mucus metaplasia in a dual Th2/Th17 model of asthma. IL-13 and/or IL-17A were neutralized using mAbs. Th2/Th17 adoptive transfer induced a mixed asthma phenotype characterized by elevated eosinophilia and n... περισσότερα »

Dengue Virus Nonstructural Protein 1-Induced Antibodies Cross-React with Human Plasminogen and Enhance Its Activation [INFECTIOUS DISEASE AND HOST RESPONSE]: Dengue virus (DENV) infection is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease, and it can cause life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Abnormal activation of the coagulation and fibrinolysis system is one of the hallmarks of DHF/DSS. However, the mechanism underlying hemorrhage in DHF/DSS remains elusive. In previous studies, plasminogen (Plg) cross-reactive Abs, which can recognize DE... περισσότερα »

[TUMOR IMMUNOLOGY] by Younis, R. H., Han, K. L., Webb, T. J. via The Journal of Immunology current issue One of the mechanisms by which malignancies can induce immune suppression is through the production of cytokines that affect the maturation and differentiation of inflammatory cells in the tumor microenvironment. Semaphorin 4D (Sema4D) is a proangiogenic cytokine produced by several malignancies, which has been described in the regulation of the immune system. In the present study, we examined the role of human head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC)–secreted Sema4D on myel... περισσότερα »

: the Holy Grail for asthma phenotyping? by Merritt L. Fajt via Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Asthma has been generally defined as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways with bronchial hyperresponsiveness and reversible variable airflow obstruction, affecting 6% to 8% of the US population.1 For many years, the mainstay of therapy has been inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) and systemic corticosteroids. However, not all individuals with asthma respond to these standard treatments. Approximately 5% to 10% of individuals with asthma can be classified as having severe asthma ...περισσότερα »

Evidence vs advocacy in the e-cigarette debate: to vape or not to vape, that is the question

Evidence vs advocacy in the e-cigarette debate: to vape or not to vape, that is the question: In the current issue of the Annals, Polosa et al1 advance the argument that the electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) may have a role in reducing the incontrovertible adverse health risks of the traditional cigarette in an active smoker and thus may be a potentially safer alternative in the tobacco-smoking patient with asthma. This review complements the authors' own notable pilot study in 18 smoking patients with asthma, which suggested an improvement in airway hyperresponsiveness, pulmonary ... περισσότερα »

How many systemic reactions to skin prick tests could be preventable in defined conditions?

How many systemic reactions to skin prick tests could be preventable in defined conditions?: We read with interest the article by Sellaturay et al1 that reported the results of a large study on the rate of systemic reactions after skin prick tests (SPTs) in allergy diagnosis. We concur that the SPT is a safe procedure when inhalant allergens are used compared with the use of food extracts or fresh foods or drugs, but other studies have been published on this topic.2–5 In fact, literature data and our clinical experience suggest that even SPTs might induce a generalized allergic reac... περισσότερα »

An explicit solution for calculating optimum spawning stock size from Ricker’s stock recruitment model

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 8 δευτερόλεπτα
Stock-recruitment models have been used for decades in fisheries management as a means of formalizing the expected number of offspring that recruit to a fishery based on the number of parents. In particular, Ricker's stock recruitment model is widely used due to its flexibility and ease with which the parameters can be estimated. After model fitting, the spawning stock size that produces the maximum sustainable yield (SMSY) to a fishery, and the harvest corresponding to it (UMSY), are two of the most common biological reference points of interest to fisheries managers. However, to ... περισσότερα »

The feasibility and radiological features of sacral alar iliac fixation in an adult population: a 3D imaging study

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 8 δευτερόλεπτα
Background: Surgical treatments for adult spinal deformities often include pelvic fixation, and the feasibility of sacral-2 alar iliac (S2AI) screw fixation has been shown previously. However, sometimes S2AI screw fixation cannot be applied due to the presence of an osteolytic lesion or trauma or because the biomechanical properties of only an S2AI screw is insufficient. Therefore, we questioned the feasibility of using sacral AI screws in other segments and determined whether S3AI and S4AI screws have the potential to be used for sacral fractures. The aim of this study was to inve... περισσότερα »

Molecular evidence for sediment nitrogen fixation in a temperate New England estuary

Primary production in coastal waters is generally nitrogen (N) limited with denitrification outpacing nitrogen fixation (N2-fixation). However, recent work suggests that we have potentially underestimated the importance of heterotrophic sediment N2-fixation in marine ecosystems. We used clone libraries to examine transcript diversity of nifH (a gene associated with N2-fixation) in sediments at three sites in a temperate New England estuary (Waquoit Bay, Massachusetts, USA) and compared our results to net sediment N2 fluxes previously measured at these sites. We observed nifH expres...περισσότερα »

Structural strength of cancellous specimens from bovine femur under cyclic compression

The incidence of osteoporotic fractures was estimated as nine million worldwide in 2000, with particular occurrence at the proximity of joints rich in cancellous bone. Although most of these fractures spontaneously heal, some fractures progressively collapse during the early post-fracture period. Prediction of bone fragility during progressive collapse following initial fracture is clinically important. However, the mechanism of collapse, especially the gradual loss of the height in the cancellous bone region, is not clearly proved. The strength of cancellous bone after yield stre... περισσότερα »

Recently, the correct estimation of traffic flow has begun to be considered an essential component in intelligent transportation systems. In this paper, a new statistical method to predict traffic flows using time series analyses and geometric correlations is proposed. The novelty of the proposed method is two-fold: (1) a 3D heat map is designed to describe the traffic conditions between roads, which can effectively represent the correlations between spatially- and temporally-adjacent traffic states; and (2) the relationship between the adjacent roads on the spatiotemporal domain ...περισσότερα »

Experimental modulation of external microbiome affects nestmate recognition in harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus)

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 25 δευτερόλεπτα
Social insects use odors as cues for a variety of behavioral responses, including nestmate recognition. Past research on nestmate recognition indicates cuticular hydrocarbons are important nestmate discriminators for social insects, but other factors are likely to contribute to colony-specific odors. Here we experimentally tested whether external microbes contribute to nestmate recognition in red harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus). We changed the external microbiome of ants through topical application of either antibiotics or microbial cultures. We then observed behavior of ne... περισσότερα »

First insights into the diversity of gill monogeneans of ‘Gnathochromis’ and Limnochromis (Teleostei, Cichlidae) in Burundi: do the parasites mirror host ecology and phylogenetic history?

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 25 δευτερόλεπτα
Monogenea is one of the most species-rich groups of parasitic flatworms worldwide, with many species described only recently, which is particularly true for African monogeneans. For example, Cichlidogyrus, a genus mostly occurring on African cichlids, comprises more than 100 nominal species. Twenty-two of these have been described from Lake Tanganyika, a famous biodiversity hotspot in which many vertebrate and invertebrate taxa, including monogeneans, underwent unique and spectacular radiations. Given their often high degrees of host specificity, parasitic monogeneans were also us... περισσότερα »

Age-related changes of dental pulp tissue after experimental tooth movement in rats

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 25 δευτερόλεπτα
It is generally accepted that the effect of orthodontic tooth movement on the dental pulp in adolescents is reversible and that it has no long-lasting effect on pulpal physiology. However, it is not clear yet if the same conclusion is also valid for adult subjects. Thus, in two groups of rats, aged 6 and 40 weeks respectively, 3 molars at one side of the maxilla were moved together in a mesial direction with a standardized orthodontic appliance delivering a force of 10 cN. The contralateral side served as a control. Parasagittal histological sections were prepared after tooth move... περισσότερα »

An explicit solution for calculating optimum spawning stock size from Ricker’s stock recruitment model

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 25 δευτερόλεπτα

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 25 δευτερόλεπτα
Molecular evidence for sediment nitrogen fixation in a temperate New England estuary

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 25 δευτερόλεπτα

[image: cover.gif?v=1&s=be74442fea687c39b7fdfa63] AbstractBackground and objective There are a few experimental models that clearly describe the pathological differences in tissue destruction between periodontitis and peri-implantitis. We recently reported that the formation of immune complexes accelerates site-specific loss of attachment and alveolar bone resorption when an antigen is topically applied in the gingival sulcus of an immunized rat. We applied this model to the peri-implant tissues and compared peri-implant destruction to periodontitis without using a ligature. Materi... περισσότερα »

A specific protein profile that accompanies neoplastic transformation in the premalignant airway epithelium could provide an opportunity for early diagnosis of lung cancer. The aim of this study was to screen and identify early candidate biomarkers of non–small cell lung cancer. Thirteen non–small cell lung cancer samples were obtained within 30 minutes after a surgical resection. Laser capture microdissection was performed to enrich the normal lung cell and squamous metaplasia or atypical adenomatous hyperplasia cell populations. The resulting tandem mass spectrum was automatical... περισσότερα »

Bevacizumab, temozolomide, and radiotherapy for newly diagnosed glioblastoma: comprehensive safety results during and after first-line therapy

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Sfakianakis G. AlexandrosΠριν από 36 δευτερόλεπτα
Background The proposed use of bevacizumab with radiotherapy/temozolomide for newly diagnosed glioblastoma raised potential safety concerns. Bevacizumab has been linked with stroke, bleeding events, and wound-healing complications in other tumor types; these events are of particular concern for glioblastoma (highly vascular tumors that are usually resected). Published data on the interaction of bevacizumab with radiotherapy/temozolomide are also limited. We report safety data from a phase III randomized trial (Avastin in Glioblastoma), focusing on these considerations. Methods E... περισσότερα »

Hyperpolarization-activated cation and T-type calcium ion channel expression in porcine and human renal pacemaker tissues

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Sfakianakis G. AlexandrosΠριν από 36 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Renal pacemaker activity triggers peristaltic upper urinary tract contractions that propel waste from the kidney to the bladder, a process prone to congenital defects that are the leading cause of pediatric kidney failure. Recently, studies have discovered that hyperpolarization-activated cation (HCN) and T-type calcium (TTC) channel conductances underlie murine renal pacemaker activity, setting the origin and frequency and coordinating upper urinary tract peristalsis. Here, we determined whether this ion channel expression is conserved in the porcine and human urinary trac... περισσότερα »

One of the most suitable ways of distributing a resistive sensor array for reading is an array with M rows and N columns. This allows reduced wiring and a certain degree of parallelism in the implementation, although it also introduces crosstalk effects. Several types of circuits can carry out the analogue-digital conversion of this type of sensors. This article focuses on the use of operational amplifiers with capacitive feedback and FPGAs for this task. Specifically, modifications of a previously reported circuit are proposed to reduce the errors due to the non-idealities of the ... περισσότερα »

Micromachines, Vol. 7, Pages 18: Devices Based on Co-Integrated MEMS Actuators and Optical Waveguide: A Review

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 39 δευτερόλεπτα
The convergence of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and optics was, at the end of the last century, a fertile ground for a new breed of technological and scientific achievements. The weightlessness of light has been identified very early as a key advantage for micro-actuator application, giving rise to optical free-space MEMS devices. In parallel to these developments, the past 20 years saw the emergence of a less pursued approach relying on guided optical wave, where, pushed by the similarities in fabrication process, researchers explored the possibilities offered by mergi... περισσότερα »

Processes, Vol. 4, Pages 4: State Observer Design for Monitoring the Degree of Polymerization in a Series of Melt Polycondensation Reactors

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 39 δευτερόλεπτα
A nonlinear reduced-order state observer is applied to estimate the degree of polymerization in a series of polycondensation reactors. The finishing stage of polyethylene terephthalate synthesis is considered in this work. This process has a special structure of lower block triangular form, which is properly utilized to facilitate the calculation of the state-dependent gain in the observer design. There are two possible on-line measurements in each reactor. One is continuous, and the other is slow-sampled with dead time. For the slow-sampled titration measurement, inter-sample beha... περισσότερα »

Syntheses of coumarins, which are a structurally interesting antioxidant activity, was done in this article. The modification of 7-hydroxycoumarin by different reaction steps was done to yield target compounds. Molecular structures were characterized by different spectroscopical techniques (Fourier transformation infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance). Antioxidant activities were performed by using various in vitro spectrophometric assays against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Regulation of the T-type Ca2+ channel Cav3.2 by hydrogen sulfide: Emerging controversies concerning the role of H2S in nociception

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 39 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Ion channels represent a large and growing family of target proteins regulated by gasotransmitters such as nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and, as described more recently, hydrogen sulfide. Indeed, many of the biological actions of these gases can be accounted for by their ability to modulate ion channel activity. Here, we report recent evidence that H2S is a modulator of low voltage-activated T-type Ca2+ channels, and discriminates between the different subtypes of T-type Ca2+ channel in that it selectively modulates Cav3.2, whilst Cav3.1 and Cav3.3 are unaffected. Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 39 δευτερόλεπτα
Dragonflies achieve agile maneuverability by flapping four wings independently. Different phase angles between the flapping forewing and hindwing have been observed during various flight modes. The aerodynamic performance depends on phase angle control, as exemplified by an artificial flying ornithopter. Here, we present a dragonfly-like ornithopter whose phase angle was designed to vary according to the phase lag between the slider-cranks of the forewing and hindwing. Two microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) differential pressure sensors were attached to the center of both forew...περισσότερα »

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 39 δευτερόλεπτα
Poly(vinyl caprolactam) (PNVCL) is one of the most important thermoresponsive polymers because it is similar to poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide). PNVCL precipitates from aqueous solutions in a physiological temperature range (32–34 °C). The use of PNVCL instead of PNIPAM is considered advantageous because of the assumed lower toxicity of PNVCL. PNVCL copolymer gels are sensitive to external stimuli, such as temperature and pH; which gives them a wide range of biomedical applications and consequently attracts considerable scientific interest. This review focuses on the recent studies o...περισσότερα »

However, LDG with D2 LND for advanced gastric cancer remains in limited use. The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the safety of LDG with D2 LND for gastric cancer. Methods From January 2010 to September 2014, 296 patients underwent LDG; those who received D1+ LND (*n* = 230) or D2 LND (*n* = 66) were included in this study. The clinicopathological characteristics and short-term outcomes of both groups were investigated ...περισσότερα »

Optimising the diagnostic strategy for onychomycosis from sample collection to FUNGAL identification evaluation of a diagnostic kit for real-time PCR

Summary Onychomycosis is a common nail disorder mainly due to dermatophytes for which the conventional diagnosis requires direct microscopic observation and culture of a biological sample. Nevertheless, antifungal treatments are commonly prescribed without a mycological examination having been performed, partly because of the slow growth of dermatophytes. Therefore, molecular biology has been applied to this […]

Histopathological comparison of the onset of peri-implantitis and periodontitis in rats

[image: cover.gif?v=1&s=be74442fea687c39b7fdfa63] Abstract Background and objective There are a few experimental models that clearly describe the pathological differences in tissue destruction between periodontitis and peri-implantitis. Mat... περισσότερα »
