Solitary wasps paralyze insects or spiders with stinging venom and feed the paralyzed preys to their larva. Accordingly, the venoms should contain a variety of constituents acting on nervous systems. However, only a few solitary wasp venoms have been chemically studied despite thousands of species inhabiting the planet. We have surveyed bioactive substances in solitary wasp venoms found in Japan and discovered a variety of novel bioactive peptides. Quantum theory has been applied in a number of fields outside physics, e.g., cognitive science and information retrieval (IR). Recently, it has been shown that quantum theory can subsume various key IR models into a single mathematical formalism of Hilbert vector spaces. While a series of quantum-inspired IR models has been proposed, limited effort has been devoted to verify the existence of the quantum-like phenomenon in real users' information retrieval processes, from a real user study perspective. In this paper, we aim to explore and model the quantum interference in users' re... περισσότερα »

Critically ill older patients with sarcopenia experience greater morbidity and mortality than younger patients. It is anticipated that unabated protein catabolism would be detrimental for the critically ill older patient. Healthy older subjects experience a diminished response to protein supplementation when compared to their younger counterparts, but this anabolic resistance can be overcome by increasing protein intake. Preliminary evidence suggests that older patients may respond differently to protein intake than younger patients during critical illness as well. If sufficient p... περισσότερα »

Th17 Cell Response in Mice following Motor Nerve Injury
An increased risk of ALS has been reported for veterans, varsity athletes, and professional football players. The mechanism underlying the increased risk in these populations has not been identified; however, it has been proposed that motor nerve injury may trigger immune responses which, in turn, can accelerate the progression of ALS. Accumulating evidence indicates that abnormal immune reactions and inflammation are involved in the pathogenesis of ALS, but the specific immune cells involved have not been clearly defined. To understand how nerve injury and immune responses may co...περισσότερα »

Defective ceramide synthases in mice cause reduced amplitudes in electroretinograms and altered sphingolipid composition in retina and cornea
Abstract Complex sphingolipids are strongly expressed in neuronal tissue and contain ceramides in their backbone. Ceramides are synthesized by six ceramide synthases (CerS1-6). Although it is known that each tissue has a unique profile of ceramide synthase expression and ceramide synthases are implicated in several neurodegenerative disorders, the expression of ceramide synthase isoforms was never investigated in the retina. Here, we demonstrate CerS1, CerS2 and CerS4 expression in mouse retina and cornea, with CerS4 ubiquitously expressed in all retinal neurons and Müller cells. T...περισσότερα »
Inhibitory effects of heterotopic noxious counter-stimulation on perception and brain activity related to Aβ-fiber activation
Abstract Heterotopic noxious counter-stimulation (HNCS) inhibits pain and pain processes through cerebral and cerebrospinal mechanisms. However, it is unclear whether HNCS inhibits non-nociceptive processes, which needs to be clarified for a better understanding of HNCS analgesia. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of HNCS on perception and scalp somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP). Seventeen healthy volunteers participated in two counter-balanced sessions, including non-nociceptive (selective Aβ-fiber activation) or nociceptive electrical stimulation, combined with... περισσότερα »

Mu suppression – a good measure of the human mirror neuron system?

Bishop Mu suppression has been proposed as a signature of the activity of the human mirror neuron system. However the mu frequency band (8-13 Hz) overlaps with the alpha frequency band, which is sensitive to attentional fluctuation, and thus mu suppression could potentially be confounded by changes in attentional engagement. The specific baseline against which mu suppression is assessed may be crucial, yet there is little consistency in how this is defined. We examined mu suppr...περισσότερα »

Nutrients, Vol. 8, Pages 226: Nitrogen Balance and Protein Requirements for Critically Ill Older Patients

Characterization of microbial associations with methanotrophic archaea and sulfate-reducing bacteria through statistical comparison of nested Magneto-FISH enrichments
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Methane seep systems along continental margins host diverse and dynamic microbial assemblages, sustained in large part through the microbially mediated process of sulfate-coupled Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane (AOM). This methanotrophic metabolism has been linked to consortia of anaerobic methane-oxidizing archaea (ANME) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). These two groups are the focus of numerous studies; however, less is known about the wide diversity of other seep associated microorganisms. Moves toward online data collection now mean that psychological investigations take place around the clock, which affords researchers the ability to easily study time-of-day effects. Recent analyses have shown, for instance, that implicit attitudes have time-of-day effects. The plausibility that these effects indicate circadian rhythms rat... περισσότερα »

Nutrients, Vol. 8, Pages 226: Nitrogen Balance and Protein Requirements for Critically Ill Older Patients

Does cognitive flexibility predict treatment gains in Internet-delivered psychological treatment of social anxiety disorder, depression, or tinnitus?
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Little is known about the individual factors that predict outcomes in Internet-administered psychological treatments. We hypothesized that greater cognitive flexibility (i.e. the ability to simultaneously consider several concepts and tasks and switch effortlessly between them in response to changes in environmental contingencies) would provide a better foundation for learning and employing the cognitive restructuring techniques taught and exercised in therapy, leading to greater treatment gains. Participants in three trials featuring Internet-administered ps... περισσότερα »
Old maids have more appeal: effects of age and pheromone source on mate attraction in an orb-web spider
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Background. In many insects and spider species, females attract males with volatile sex pheromones, but we know surprisingly little about the costs and benefits of female pheromone emission. Here, we test the hypothesis that mate attraction by females is dynamic and strategic in the sense that investment in mate attraction is matched to the needs of the female. We use the orb-web spider Argiope bruennichi in which females risk the production of unfertilised egg clutches if they do not receive a copulation within a certain time-frame. Methods.
Here, we demonstrate CerS1, CerS2 and CerS4 expression in mouse retina and cornea, with CerS4 ubiquitously expressed in all retinal neurons and Müller cells. ...περισσότερα »

Role of cAMP signalling in winner and loser effects in crayfish agonistic encounters
Abstract For territorial animals, establishment of status-dependent dominance order is essential to maintain social stability. In agonistic encounters of the crayfish *Procambarus Clarkii*, a difference of body length of 3 -7% is enough for larger animals to become dominant. Despite a physical disadvantage, small winners of the first pairings were more likely to win subsequent conflicts with larger inexperienced animals. In contrast, the losers of the first pairings rarely won subsequent conflicts with smaller naive animals. Such experiences of previous winning or losing affected a... περισσότερα »

Role of Malleus relocation in cholesteatoma surgery: Our experience in 145 patients
Abstract The goals of cholesteatoma surgery are complete eradication of the disease and if possible restoration of hearing of the patient. A technique that allows a surgeon to achieve these goals. The advantages of the intact canal technique are rapid healing and being more functional. But cholesteatoma recidivism is common after this technique. The introduction of malleus relocation technique favors the use of the repositioned malleus in ossiculoplasty with more stable ossiculoplasty and better hearing outcomes*.* But no study has presented its role in ICW surgery for cholesteat... περισσότερα »

Tricellular Tight Junctions in the Inner Ear
Tricellular Tight Junctions in the Inner Ear: Tight junctions (TJs) are structures that seal the space between the epithelial cell sheets. In the inner ear, the barrier function of TJs is indispensable for the separation of the endolymphatic and perilymphatic spaces, which is essential for the generation and maintenance of the endocochlear potential (EP). TJs are formed by the intercellular binding of membrane proteins, known as claudins, and mutations in these proteins cause deafness in humans and mice. Within the epithelial cell sheet, however, a bound structure is present at the ... περισσότερα »

Endoscopic Repair of Laryngeal Cleft
Endoscopic Repair of Laryngeal Cleft: Laryngeal cleft (LC) is a rare congenital malformation of the posterior larynx. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion because type 1 clefts, which are the most common, can be easily overlooked by the endoscopist. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of LC are essential to prevent permanent pulmonary injury. Presenting symptoms include aspiration, cough, recurrent pneumonia, and dysphagia, with a wide range of severity. A trial of feeding therapy remains the management of choice for type 1 LC.

Laryngotracheal Separation with and without Diversion for the Treatment of Chronic Aspiration
Laryngotracheal Separation with and without Diversion for the Treatment of Chronic Aspiration: Chronic aspiration can be a life-threatening disorder of variable etiology. Often patients, both pediatric and adult, have suffered neurological devastation placing them at an increased risk of morbidity and mortality from laryngeal incompetence and the inability to protect their airways from soilage. Numerous surgical procedures have been described to tackle this problem, however most definitive procedures cause damage to the intrinsic integrity of the larynx and are irreversible.
We selected a hierarchical set of FISH probes targeting a range o...περισσότερα »
Time-of-day effects in implicit racial in-group preferences are likely selection effects, not circadian rhythms
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Time-of-day effects in human psychological functioning have been known of since the 1800s. However, outside of research specifically focused on the quantification of circadian rhythms, their study has largely been neglected.
Macromammalian faunas, biochronology and palaeoecology of the early Pleistocene Main Quarry hominin-bearing deposits of the Drimolen Palaeocave System, South Africa
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] The Drimolen Palaeocave System Main Quarry deposits (DMQ) are some of the most prolific hominin and primate-bearing deposits in the Fossil Hominids of South Africa UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discovered in the 1990s, excavations into the DMQ have yielded a demographically diverse sample of Paranthropus robustus (including DNH 7, the most complete cranium of the species recovered to date), early Homo, Papio hamadryas robinsoni and Cercopithecoides williamsi. Alongside the hominin and primate sample is a diverse macromammalian assemblage, but prior publications ...περισσότερα »
A UK general practice population cohort study investigating the association between lipid lowering drugs and 30-day mortality following medically attended acute respiratory illness
Background. Cholesterol lowering drugs HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) and PPARα activators (fibrates) have been shown to reduce host inflammation via non-disease specific immunomodulatory mechanisms. Recent studies suggest that commonly prescribed drugs in general practice, statins and fibrates, may be beneficial in influenza-like illness related mortality. This retrospective cohort study examines the association between two lipid lowering drugs, statins and fibrates, and all-cause 30-day mortality following a medically attended acute respiratory illness (MAARI). Methods. ... περισσότερα »
How does agonistic behaviour differ in albino and pigmented fish?
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] In addition to hypopigmentation of the skin and red iris colouration, albino animals also display distinct physiological and behavioural alterations. However, information on the social interactions of albino animals is rare and has mostly been limited to specially bred strains of albino rodents and animals from unique environments in caves. Differentiating between the effects of albinism and domestication on behaviour in rodents can be difficult, and social behaviour in cave fish changes according to species-specific adaptations to conditions of permanent dar... περισσότερα »
Phylogenetic species delimitation for crayfishes of the genus Pacifastacus
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Molecular genetic approaches are playing an increasing role in conservation science by identifying biodiversity that may not be evident by morphology-based taxonomy and systematics. So-called cryptic species are particularly prevalent in freshwater environments, where isolation of dispersal-limited species, such as crayfishes, within dendritic river networks often gives rise to high intra- and inter-specific genetic divergence. We apply here a multi-gene molecular approach to investigate relationships among extant species of the crayfish genus Pacifastacus, r... περισσότερα »
In four shallow and mesophotic tropical reef sponges from Guam the microbial community largely depends on host identity
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Sponges (phylum Porifera) are important members of almost all aquatic ecosystems, and are renowned for hosting often dense and diverse microbial communities. While the specificity of the sponge microbiota seems to be closely related to host phylogeny, the environmental factors that could shape differences within local sponge-specific communities remain less understood. On tropical coral reefs, sponge habitats can span from shallow areas to deeper, mesophotic sites. These habitats differ in terms of environmental factors such as light, temperature, and food ava...περισσότερα »
Association of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) gene polymorphisms in Malaysian patients with chronic kidney disease
[image: fig-1-1x.jpg] Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition associated with progressive loss of kidney function and kidney damage. The two common causes of CKD are diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Other causes of CKD also include polycystic kidney disease, obstructive uropathy and primary glomerulonephritis. The receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) is a multi-ligand cell surface receptor of the immunoglobulin superfamily and it has been associated with kidney disease in both non-diabetic and diabetic patients. Presently, data on the association b...περισσότερα »
Methods. We designed field... περισσότερα »

The use of repetition suppression paradigms in developmental cognitive neuroscience
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2016 *Source:*Cortex Author(s): Marisa Nordt, Stefanie Hoehl, Sarah Weigelt Repetition suppression paradigms allow a more detailed look at brain functioning than classical paradigms and have been applied vigorously in adult cognitive neuroscience. These paradigms are well suited for studies in the field of developmental cognitive neuroscience as they can be applied without collecting a behavioral response and across all age groups. Furthermore, repetition suppression paradigms can be employed in various neuroscience techniques, such as fun...περισσότερα »
Mu suppression – a good measure of the human mirror neuron system?
Publication date: Available online 15 April 2016 *Source:*Cortex Author(s): Hannah M. Hobson, Dorothy V.M.

Reduced sensitivity to contrast signals from the eye region in developmental prosopagnosia
Publication date: Available online 13 April 2016 *Source:*Cortex Author(s): Katie Fisher, John Towler, Martin Eimer Contrast-related signals from the eye region are known to be important for the processing of facial identity. Individuals with developmental prosopagnosia (DP) have severe face recognition problems, which may be linked to deficits in the perceptual processing of identity-related information from the eyes. We tested this hypothesis by measuring N170 components in DP participants and age-matched controls in response to face images where the contrast polarity of the eyes ... περισσότερα »

We used a modified change detection paradigm, in which the items moved before the retention interval. In all of the experiments, we presented identical color-color conjunction items that were arranged to provide a common fate Gestalt grouping cue during their movement. Task context was manipulated by adding a condition highlighting e...περισσότερα »
Dorsal and ventral language pathways in persistent developmental stuttering
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2016 *Source:*Cortex Author(s): Vered Kronfeld-Duenias, Ofer Amir, Ruth Ezrati-Vinacour, Oren Civier, Michal Ben-Shachar Persistent developmental stuttering is a speech disorder that affects an individual's ability to fluently produce speech. While the disorder mainly manifests in situations that require language production, it is still unclear whether persistent developmental stuttering is indeed a language impairment, and if so, which language stream is implicated in people who stutter. In this study, we take a neuroanatomical approach t... περισσότερα »
