Energies, Vol. 9, Pages 269: Thermal Efficiency of Cogeneration Units with Multi-Stage Reheating for Russian Municipal Heating Systems
This paper explores the layout of an optimum process for supplying heat to Russian municipal heating systems operating in a market environment. We analyze and compare the standard cogeneration unit design with two-stage reheating of service water coming from controlled extraction locations and layouts that employ three in-line reheaters with heat the supply controlled by a rotary diaphragm and qualitative/quantitative methods (so-called "uncontrolled extraction"). Cogeneration unit designs are benchmarked in terms of their thermal efficiency expressed as a fuel consumption rate. Th... περισσότερα »
IJMS, Vol. 17, Pages 386: Starvation after Cobalt-60 γ-Ray Radiation Enhances Metastasis in U251 Glioma Cells by Regulating the Transcription Factor SP1
Radiation is of clinical importance during glioma therapy; however, vasculature damage is observed over the treatment course. This type of tissue damage might lead to starvation conditions, affecting tumor metastasis. To test this possibility, we compared starvation conditions in conjunction with radiation treatment to monitor metastatic ability in the U251 glioma cell line. Transcriptome, western blot, and immunofluorescence analyses were used to measure the RNA and protein expression changes of the U251 cells after various treatments. We found that starvation combined with radia... περισσότερα »
MCA, Vol. 1, Pages 127-132: A Cost-Effective Method for Ultrasound Volumetric Imaging
A synthetic receive aperture technique is explored for cost-effective ultrasound scanners with high frame rates and beam density. The technique provides ultrasound volumetric imaging where beam count is very large with 2-D transducer arrays using subaperture processing. For every beam line, transmit beam is performed with a small subaperture whereas the reflected echo signals are received from non-overlapping subapertures. For every transmit-receive subaperture combination, a small number of beams are acquired and then the number of beam lines is increased through beam space inter...περισσότερα »
Anti-inflammatory properties of the vagus nerve: potential therapeutic implications of vagus nerve stimulation
Abstract Brain and viscera interplay within the autonomic nervous system where the vagus nerve (VN), containing approximately 80% afferent and 20% efferent fibres, plays multiple key roles in the homeostatic regulations of visceral functions. Recent data has suggested the anti-inflammatory role of the VN. This vagal function is mediated through several pathways, some of them still debated. The first one is the anti-inflammatory hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis which is stimulated by vagal afferent fibres and leads to the release of cortisol by the adrenal glands. The second on... περισσότερα »

IJMS, Vol. 17, Pages 503: Diabetes Mellitus Induces Alzheimer’s Disease Pathology: Histopathological Evidence from Animal Models
[image: ag] Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the major causative disease of dementia and is characterized pathologically by the accumulation of senile plaques (SPs) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the brain. Although genetic studies show that β-amyloid protein (Aβ), the major component of SPs, is the key factor underlying AD pathogenesis, it remains unclear why advanced age often leads to AD. Interestingly, several epidemiological and clinical studies show that type II diabetes mellitus (DM) patients are more likely to exhibit increased susceptibility to AD. Moreover, growing evid... περισσότερα »

Laryngeal Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis Presenting with Neck Mass in an Adult Woman
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a very rare condition that commonly affects the head and neck region. There are very few cases of isolated laryngeal involvement by LCH, mostly reported in pediatric patients. Here, we report a case of laryngeal LCH in a 62-year-old woman presenting with a neck mass several weeks ago.
The second one,...περισσότερα »

Detecting Gene Rearrangements in Patient Populations Through a 2-Step Diagnostic Test Comprised of Rapid IHC Enrichment Followed by Sensitive Next-Generation Sequencing.
Targeted therapy combined with companion diagnostics has led to the advancement of next-generation sequencing (NGS) for detection of molecular alterations. However, using a diagnostic test to identify patient populations with low prevalence molecular alterations, such as gene rearrangements, poses efficiency, and cost challenges. To address this, we have developed a 2-step diagnostic test to identify NTRK1, NTRK2, NTRK3, ROS1, and ALK rearrangements in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded clinical specimens. This test is comprised of immunohistochemistry screening using a pan-receptor t...περισσότερα »

Transcriptome, western […]
