Abstract
Objective
Arytenoid dislocation is one of the rare complications following tracheal intubation, and there are no published studies that report arytenoid dislocation during orthognathic surgery. The frequency of this phenomenon and the results of therapy are evaluated in this study.
Methods
A total of 3 patients out of a group of 5032 who underwent orthognathic surgery in an 11-year period had a postoperative arytenoid dislocation. Closed reduction was used in the three patients. In order to check the therapeutic effect, arytenoid dislocation symptoms were recorded and acoustic analysis was performed pre-reduction (T0), immediately after reduction (T1) and at the following post-reduction times: 1 week (T2), 2 weeks (T3), 4 weeks (T4).
Results
The incidence of arytenoid dislocation in orthognathic surgery was 0.0596%. The symptoms of two patients were improved significantly after T3 with voice recovery and resolution of odynophagia. The symptoms of the other patient were improved significantly after T4. The treatment effects for all the three patients were satisfactory.
Conclusion
Arytenoid dislocation must be considered in cases of prolonged hoarseness post-orthognathic surgery. Examination should be carried out as soon as possible, which can hasten the treatment of arytenoid dislocation, and achieve a good outcome.
