Abstract
Purpose

The purpose of this study was to quantify trainee contributions to the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS).

Methods

This was retrospective cohort study of research articles published in the JOMS from 2002 to 2016. Predictor variables were the presence and type of trainee author. Outcomes were study topic and design. Comparisons were performed using chi-squared tests. To quantify trainee contributions, we calculated the 1. number and 2. proportion of articles with a trainee author as well as 3. the proportion of trainee authors per publication. The association between time and the number and proportion of trainee articles was determined using simple correlations. The association between time and the percent of trainee authors per publication was determined using an analysis of variance.

Results

1455 articles were included in this study. 72.0% had at least 1 trainee author, and trainees made up 27.6% of all authorships. Both the number and proportion of trainee articles has slowly risen with time, and there was a strong correlation between the percent of trainee articles and publication year (r=0.86, p<0.01). Compared to articles without a trainee, a higher proportion of trainee articles were on orthognathics (p<0.01). Trainee articles also had a higher proportion of case reports/series (p=0.03) and retrospective cohort studies (p<0.01) and a lower proportion of prospective cohort studies (p=0.02), literature reviews/meta-analysis (p<0.01), and randomized controlled trials (p=0.02).

Conclusions

Trainee authors are present in the majority of JOMS articles, and an increasing percent of articles are including trainees. Efforts should be made to include trainees in studies with higher levels of evidence.
