Drug misuse and addiction are global problems with widespread ramifications. A government survey in England and Wales (2014/15) showed that 8.6% of all adults younger than 60 years were thought to have used illicit drugs, and about 2.2% of the population were classified as frequent drug users.1 The recent introduction of the bill for the legalisation of cannabis for "medicinal purposes" in the United Kingdom (2017) is therefore being viewed with scepticism.2
