Hypothesis: solid tumours behave as systemic metabolic dictators
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 6 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Current knowledge regarding mechanisms of carcinogenesis in human beings centres around the accumulation of genetic instability, amplified cellular signalling, disturbed cellular energy metabolism and microenvironmental regulation governed by complicated cell–cell interactions. In this article, we provide an alternative view of cancer biology. We propose that cancer behaves as a systemic dictator that interacts with tissues throughout the body to control their metabolism and eventually homeostasis. The mechanism of development of this endocrine organ–like tumour (EOLT) tis... περισσότερα »

Iodide mumps following fistulogram in a haemodialysis patient
Iodide mumps following fistulogram in a haemodialysis patient: Iodide mumps, or contrast-induced acute sialadenitis, is characterised by rapid, painless enlargement of the salivary glands, following the use of iodinated contrast dye. The underlying mechanism of this adverse reaction is not completely understood. It could be due to an idiosyncratic reaction or related to deposition of iodide in the ductal systems of the salivary glands causing blockage and inflammation. With increasing renal dysfunction, the elimination half-life of the iodine-containing contrast dye gets prolonged.... περισσότερα »

Umbilical venous catheters (UVCs)
Advantages of being diligent: lessons learnt from umbilical venous catheterisation in neonates: Umbilical venous catheters (UVCs) are commonly used in neonatal units. Abdominal radiograph, taken soon after the insertion, is used to confirm the correct placement of the catheter. However, as demonstrated by our case series, complacency when an initial UVC is normally positioned can lead to detecting UVC-related complications very late. We describe cases of three neonates where, despite the initial UVC being confirmed to be well positioned, the patients developed life-threatening comp... περισσότερα »

Toxins, Vol. 8, Pages 37: Cancer Therapy by Catechins Involves Redox Cycling of Copper Ions and Generation of Reactive Oxygenspecies
Catechins, the dietary phytochemicals present in green tea and other beverages, are considered to be potent inducers of apoptosis and cytotoxicity to cancer cells. While it is believed that the antioxidant properties of catechins and related dietary agents may contribute to lowering the risk of cancer induction by impeding oxidative injury to DNA, these properties cannot account for apoptosis induction and chemotherapeutic observations. Catechin (C), epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) are the four major constituents of green tea. In this... περισσότερα »

In this study, we developed a multiplex PCR-Luminex assay for the simultaneous detection of five major pathogens, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, which frequently cause CNS infections. Through the hybridization reaction between multiplex PCR-amplified targets and oligonucleotide "anti-TAG" sequences, we found that the PCR-Luminex assay could detect as low as 101–102 copies of synthetic... περισσότερα »
Entropy, Vol. 18, Pages 48: Thermodynamics of Quantum Feedback Cooling
The ability to initialize quantum registers in pure states lies at the core of many applications of quantum technologies, from sensing to quantum information processing and computation. In this paper, we tackle the problem of increasing the polarization bias of an ensemble of two-level register spins by means of joint coherent manipulations, involving a second ensemble of ancillary spins and energy dissipation into an external heat bath. We formulate this spin refrigeration protocol, akin to algorithmic cooling, in the general language of quantum feedback control, and identify the... περισσότερα »

Metals, Vol. 6, Pages 33: Monte Carlo Modelling of Single-Crystal Diffuse Scattering from Intermetallics
Single-crystal diffuse scattering (SCDS) reveals detailed structural insights into materials. In particular, it is sensitive to two-body correlations, whereas traditional Bragg peak-based methods are sensitive to single-body correlations. This means that diffuse scattering is sensitive to ordering that persists for just a few unit cells: nanoscale order, sometimes referred to as "local structure", which is often crucial for understanding a material and its function. Metals and alloys were early candidates for SCDS studies because of the availability of large single crystals. While... περισσότερα »

However, this process can root the momentous inrush current for the transformer installed before the load. The consequences of inrush current can be the reduction of output voltage and tripping of protective devices of the UPS system. Furthermore, it can also damage the sensitive load and decrease the transformer's lifetime. To prevent the inrush current, and to avoid its ... περισσότερα »

Skeletal muscle is the largest tissue in the human body and plays an important role in locomotion and whole body metabolism. It accounts for ~80% of insulin stimulated glucose disposal. Skeletal muscle insulin resistance, a primary feature of Type 2 diabetes, is caused by a decreased ability of muscle to respond to circulating insulin. Physical exercise improves insulin sensitivity and whole body metabolism and remains one of the most promising interventions for the prevention of Type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance and exercise adaptations in skeletal muscle might be a cause, or c...περισσότερα »

The Notch Ligand DLL4 Defines a Capability of Human Dendritic Cells in Regulating Th1 and Th17 Differentiation [CLINICAL AND HUMAN IMMUNOLOGY]
The Notch Ligand DLL4 Defines a Capability of Human Dendritic Cells in Regulating Th1 and Th17 Differentiation [CLINICAL AND HUMAN IMMUNOLOGY]: Notch signaling regulates multiple helper CD4+ T cell programs. We have recently demonstrated that dendritic cells (DCs) expressing the Notch ligand DLL4 are critical for eliciting alloreactive T cell responses and induction of graft-versus-host disease in mice. However, the human counterpart of murine DLL4+ DCs has yet to be examined. We report the identification of human DLL4+ DCs and their critical role in regulating Th1 and Th17 differe... περισσότερα »
