Basophil activation test: food challenge in a test tube or specialist research tool?
*Basophil activation test: food challenge in a test tube or specialist research tool?: Oral food challenge (OFC) * Abstract *Oral food challenge (OFC) is the gold-standard to diagnose food allergy; however, it is a labour and resource-intensive procedure with the risk of causing an acute allergic reaction, which is potentially severe. Therefore, OFC are reserved for cases where the clinical history and the results of skin prick test and/or specific IgE do not confirm or exclude the diagnosis of food allergy. This is a significant proportion of patients seen in Allergy clinics and... περισσότερα »
Conducting Real-Time Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study via Telepractice: A Preliminary Feasibility and Reliability Study
Abstract A small number of studies have examined the feasibility of conducting videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) via telepractice. While the results have confirmed this potential, the systems tested to date have either reported issues that impacted the ability to analyze/interpret the VFSS recordings in real time, or they were not designed to enable real-time interpretation. Further system design is needed to establish a telepractice model that enables the VFSS assessment to be both guided and interpreted live in real time. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility an... περισσότερα »

The Utility of Chewing Gum in Treating White Spot Lesions
The Utility of Chewing Gum in Treating White Spot Lesions: AbstractWhite spot lesions (WSL) are early non-cavitated carious lesions where the subsurface mineral loss has produced changes in the optical properties of the enamel. These lesions are visibly detectable as the loss of translucency results in a white appearance of the enamel surface. WSL can be arrested or reversed if the cariogenic challenge is sufficiently controlled or therapeutic agents are applied to promote enamel remineralization. Sugar-free chewing gum has been shown to promote the remineralization of enamel subsu... περισσότερα »
Evaluating multipulse integration as a neural-health correlate in human cochlear-implant users: Relationship to forward-masking recovery
Evaluating multipulse integration as a neural-health correlate in human cochlear-implant users: Relationship to forward-masking recovery: [image: cm_sbs_024_plain.png] The present study evaluated the slopes of threshold-versus-pulse-rate functions (multipulse integration, MPI) in humans with cochlear implants in relation to recovery from 300-ms forward maskers. MPI has been correlated with spiral ganglion cell density in animals. The present study showed that steeper MPI functions were correlated with faster recovery from forward masking. The findings suggested that the variations ... περισσότερα »
The L1 phonetics-prosody interface transfers to L2 by examining prosodic strengthening effects (due to prosodic position and focus) on English voicing contrast (bad-pad)
Effects of L1 prosody on segmental contrast in L2: The case of English stop voicing contrast produced by Korean speakers: [image: cm_sbs_024_plain.png] This study investigated how the L1 phonetics-prosody interface transfers to L2 by examining prosodic strengthening effects (due to prosodic position and focus) on English voicing contrast (bad-pad) as produced by Korean vs English speakers. Under prosodic strengthening, Korean speakers showed a greater F0 difference due to voicing than English speakers, suggesting that their experience with the macroprosodic use of F0 in Korean tran... περισσότερα »

The Effects of Age and Preoral Sensorimotor Cues on Anticipatory Mouth Movement During Swallowing: Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of preoral sensorimotor cues on anticipatory swallowing/eating-related mouth movements in older and younger adults. It was hypothesized that these cues are essential to timing anticipatory oral motor patterns, and these movements are delayed in older as compared with younger adults. Method Using a 2 × 2 repeated-measures design, eating-related lip, jaw, and hand movements were recorded from 24 healthy older (ages 70–85 year...περισσότερα »

QTL Mapping of Endocochlear Potential Differences
QTL Mapping of Endocochlear Potential Differences between C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ mice: AbstractWe reported earlier that the endocochlear potential (EP) differs between C57BL/6J (B6) and BALB/cJ (BALB) mice, being lower in BALBs by about 10 mV (Ohlemiller et al. Hear Res 220: 10–26, 2006). This difference corresponds to strain differences with respect to the density of marginal cells in cochlear stria vascularis. After about 1 year of age, BALB mice also tend toward EP reduction that correlates with further marginal cell loss. We therefore suggested that early *sub-clinical* features ... περισσότερα »

Managing Upper Extremity Clonus With Intramuscular Botulinum Toxin–A Injections in a Patient Poststroke
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοRehabilitation,Sports and Exercise Medicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 2 ώρες
Spasticity and clonus are common clinical signs of upper motor neuron lesions poststroke. Intramuscular botulinum toxin–A injections have been shown to reduce spasticity and to improve quality of life. Upper extremity clonus can have a significant impact upon activities of daily living and can pose challenges to comfort, self-care, hygiene, and appearance. Although less common than in the ankle, it is important to understand how upper extremity clonus management may be beneficial to patients presenting with this finding. from #Rehabilitation via ola Kala on Inoreader http://ift.tt... περισσότερα »

Synthesis and characterization of thermo-responsive supramolecular diblock copolymers
Abstract In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of a new thermo-responsive supramolecular amphiphiles diblock copolymer, methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)*-block-*Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (mPEG*-b-*PNIPAM). The mPEG with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) group and the PNIPAM with adamantine (AD) group were synthesized, respectively, and mPEG*-b-*PNIPAM was then obtained by the host-guest inclusion between AD and β-CD. The structure and molecular weight of mPEG*-b-*PNIPAM was confirmed by 1H NMR and GPC measurements. At low temperature (*T* < 33 °C), the PNIPAM block is hy... περισσότερα »
