Abstract Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, along with HIV-2 the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), has been a global health problem for more than three decades (Sharp and Hahn 2011). A recent report from UNAIDS indicated that an estimated 35 million people were living with HIV-1 worldwide and 2.1 million became newly infected (UNAIDS, 2014). Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a current treatment for HIV-1 infection (Hammer et al, 2008). ART can suppress HIV-1 replication and reduce the morbidity and mortality rate in HIV/AIDS patients. Effect of the retinal size of a peripheral cue on attentional orienting in two- and three-dimensional worlds

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 7 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract It has been documented that due to limited attentional resources, the size of the attentional focus is inversely correlated with processing efficiency. Moreover, by adopting a variety of two-dimensional size illusions induced by pictorial depth cues (e.g., the Ponzo illusion), previous studies have revealed that the perceived, rather than the retinal, size of an object determines its detection. It remains unclear, however, whether and how the retinal versus perceived size of a cue influences the process of attentional orienting to subsequent targets, and whether the corre... περισσότερα »

Astrocytes Regulate GLP-1 Receptor-Mediated Effects on Energy Balance

Astrocytes are well established modulators of extracellular glutamate, but their direct influence on energy balance-relevant behaviors is largely understudied. As the anorectic effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists are partly mediated by central modulation of glutamatergic signaling, we tested the hypothesis that astrocytic GLP-1R signaling regulates energy balance in rats. Central or peripheral administration of a fluorophore-labeled GLP-1R agonist, exendin-4, localizes within astrocytes and neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), a hindbrain nucl... περισσότερα »

Propagating Neural Source Revealed by Doppler Shift of Population Spiking Frequency

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 7 δευτερόλεπτα
Electrical activity in the brain during normal and abnormal function is associated with propagating waves of various speeds and directions. It is unclear how both fast and slow traveling waves with sometime opposite directions can coexist in the same neural tissue. By recording population spikes simultaneously throughout the unfolded rodent hippocampus with a penetrating microelectrode array, we have shown that fast and slow waves are causally related, so a slowly moving neural source generates fast-propagating waves at ~0.12 m/s. The source of the fast population spikes is limite... περισσότερα »

Opening Holes in the Blanket of Inhibition: Localized Lateral Disinhibition by VIP Interneurons

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 7 δευτερόλεπτα
Inhibitory interneurons in the neocortex often connect in a promiscuous and extensive fashion, extending a "blanket of inhibition" on the circuit. This raises the problem of how can excitatory activity propagate in the midst of this widespread inhibition. One solution to this problem could be the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) interneurons, which disinhibit other interneurons. To explore how VIP interneurons affect the local circuits, we use two-photon optogenetics to activate them individually in mouse visual cortex *in vivo* while measuring their output with two-photon calci... περισσότερα »

Midline thalamus is implicated in linking visceral and exteroceptive sensory information with behavior. However, whether neuronal activity is modulated with temporal precision by cues and actions in real time is unknown. Using single-neuron recording and a Pavlovian visual-cue/liquid-reward association task in rats, we discovered phasic responses to sensory cues, appropriately timed to modify information processing in output targets, as well as tonic modulations within and between trials that were differentially reward modulated, which may have distinct arousal functions. Long-Term Stability of Motor Cortical Activity: Implications for Brain Machine Interfaces and Optimal Feedback Control

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
The human motor system is capable of remarkably precise control of movements—consider the skill of professional baseball pitchers or surgeons. This precise control relies upon stable representations of movements in the brain. Here, we investigated the stability of cortical activity at multiple spatial and temporal scales by recording local field potentials (LFPs) and action potentials (multiunit spikes, MSPs) while two monkeys controlled a cursor either with their hand or directly from the brain using a brain–machine interface. LFPs and some MSPs were remarkably stable over time p... περισσότερα »

Astrocytes Regulate GLP-1 Receptor-Mediated Effects on Energy Balance

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα

H3K9me3 Inhibition Improves Memory, Promotes Spine Formation, and Increases BDNF Levels in the Aged Hippocampus

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
An increasing number of studies show that an altered epigenetic landscape may cause impairments in regulation of learning and memory-related genes within the aged hippocampus, eventually resulting in cognitive deficits in the aged brain. One such epigenetic repressive mark is trimethylation of H3K9 (H3K9me3), which is typically implicated in gene silencing. Here, we identify, for the first time, an essential role for H3K9me3 and its histone methyl transferase (SUV39H1) in mediating hippocampal memory functions. Pharmacological inhibition of SUV39H1 using a novel and selective inhib... περισσότερα »

Comparison of Matching Pursuit Algorithm with Other Signal Processing Techniques for Computation of the Time-Frequency Power Spectrum of Brain Signals

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Signals recorded from the brain often show rhythmic patterns at different frequencies, which are tightly coupled to the external stimuli as well as the internal state of the subject. In addition, these signals have very transient structures related to spiking or sudden onset of a stimulus, which have durations not exceeding tens of milliseconds. Further, brain signals are highly nonstationary because both behavioral state and external stimuli can change on a short time scale. It is therefore essential to study brain signals using techniques that can represent both rhythmic and tra... περισσότερα »

Complex Multiplexing of Reward-Cue- and Licking-Movement-Related Activity in Single Midline Thalamus Neurons

Age-related memory impairments have been associated with structural changes in the dopaminergic system, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Recent work indicates that iron accumulation might be of particular relevance. As iron accumulates, a degeneration of myelin sheaths has been observed in the elderly, but the relationship between both and their impact on memory performance in healthy elderly humans remain important open questions. Passive immunization with HIV-1–neutralizing antibodies: Is it effective and safe?

However, it... περισσότερα »
