The fat–fascia paddle only with a composite fibula flap: marked reduction in donor site morbidity
Fibula free flaps are used widely in head and neck reconstruction, primarily for their versatility and contribution to aesthetic and functional outcomes. The literature suggests that early complications such as wound dehiscence and skin graft loss can occur in up to a third of patients. The healing of these donor sites can be prolonged, and in certain cases may require an operative intervention. A method to overcome this problem is described herein. In raising the skin paddle, a standard lateral approach to the fibula harvest is used. from #ΓναθοΧειρουργική via xlomafota13 on Inor... περισσότερα »

Strategies for targeting primate neural circuits with viral vectors
Understanding how the brain works requires understanding how different types of neurons contribute to circuit function and behavior. Progress on this front has been accelerated by the new tools of optogenetics and chemogenetics, which provide an unprecedented level of control over distinct neuronal types in small animals. In primates, however, targeting specific types of neurons with these tools remains challenging. In this review, we discuss existing and emerging strategies for directing genetic manipulations to targeted neurons in the adult primate central nervous system. We rev... περισσότερα »
Implicit Learning and Generalization of Stretch Response Modulation in Humans
Adaptation of neural responses to repeated muscle stretching likely represents implicit learning to minimize muscle resistance to perturbations. To test this hypothesis, the forearm was placed on a horizontal manipulandum. Elbow flexors or extensors compensated an external load and were stretched by 20° or 70° rotations. Participants were instructed not to intervene by intentionally modifying the muscle resistance elicited by stretching. Many rapidly firing neurons, including those in the Medial Nucleus of the Trapezoid Body (MNTB) in the auditory brainstem, express "high threshold" voltage-gated Kv3.1 potassium channels that activate only at positive potentials and are required for stimuli to generate rapid trains of actions potentials. We now describe the actions of two imidazolidinedione derivatives, AUT1 and AUT2, which modulate Kv3.1 channels. Eukaryotic DNA replication begins from multiple origins. The origin recognition complex (ORC) binds origin DNA and scaffolds assembly of a pre-Replicative Complex (pre-RC), which is subsequently activated to initiate DNA replication. In multicellular eukaryotes, origins do not share a strict DNA consensus sequence and their activity changes in concert with chromatin status during development, but mechanisms are ill-defined. Previous genome-wide analyses in *Drosophila* and other organisms have revealed a correlation between ORC binding sites and the histone variant H3.3. This corr...περισσότερα »
Saccharomyces cerevisiae Tti2 Regulates PIKK Proteins and Stress Response
The TTT complex is composed of the three essential proteins Tel2, Tti1 and Tti2. The complex is required to maintain the steady state levels of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-related kinase (PIKK) proteins including mTOR, ATM/Tel1, ATR/Mec1, and TRRAP/Tra1, all of which serve as regulators of critical cell signaling pathways. Due to their association with heat shock proteins, and with newly synthesized PIKK peptides, components of the TTT complex may act as co-chaperones. Here, we analyze the consequences of depleting the cellular level of Tti2 in *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*. We ... περισσότερα »

Abstract Cardiovascular disease (CVD) constitutes a major public health threat worldwide, accounting for 17.3 million deaths annually. Heart disease and stroke account for the majority of healthcare costs in the developed world. While much has been accomplished in understanding the pathophysiology, molecular biology and genetics underlying the diagnosis and treatment of CVD, we know less about the role of epigenetics and their molecular determinants. The impact of environmental changes and epigenetics in CVD is now emerging as critically important in understanding the origin of dis... περισσότερα »
miR-19b controls cardiac fibroblast proliferation and migration
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 30 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Cardiac fibrosis is a fundamental constituent of a variety of cardiac dysfunction, making it a leading cause of death worldwide. However, no effective treatment for cardiac fibrosis is available. Therefore, novel therapeutics for cardiac fibrosis are highly needed. Recently, miR-19b has been found to be able to protect hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced apoptosis and improve cell survival in H9C2 cardiomyocytes, while down-regulation of miR-19b had opposite effects, indicating that increasing miR-19b may be a new therapeutic strategy for attenuating cellular apoptosis during... περισσότερα »

In raising the skin paddle, a standard lateral approach to the fibula harvest is used. from #ΓναθοΧειρουργική via xlomafota13 on Inorea... περισσότερα »

The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) is a key component of the extended amygdala, and has been implicated in anxiety and addiction. As individual neurons function within neural circuits, it is important to understand local microcircuits and larger network connections of identified neuronal types, and understand how maladaptive changes in the BNST neural networks are induced by stress and drug use. However, due to limitations of classic anatomical and physiological methods, local circuit organization of synaptic input to specific BNST neuron types is not well understood. I... περισσότερα »

Effects of Fixed Orthodontic Treatment Using Conventional, Copper-Included, and Epoxy-Coated Nickel-Titanium Archwires on Salivary Nickel Levels: A Double-Blind Randomized Clinical Trial: AbstractOrthodontic archwires, especially nickel-titanium (NiTi) ones, are a major source of nickel release. Despite their importance, no in vivo studies have assessed the ion release from conventional or new generations of NiTi archwires (copper-included and epoxy-coated). This double-blind parallel randomized clinical trial was done on 84 saliva specimens sampled at two time points from 42 ortho... περισσότερα »
Therapeutic cancer vaccines by mimicking viral infections
Designing therapeutic cancer vaccines by mimicking viral infections: AbstractThe design of efficacious and cost-effective therapeutic vaccines against cancer remains both a research priority and a challenge. For more than a decade, our laboratory has been involved in the development of synthetic peptide-based anti-cancer therapeutic vaccines. We first dedicated our efforts in the identification and validation of peptide epitopes for both CD8 and CD4 T cells from tumor-associated antigens (TAAs). Because of suboptimal immune responses and lack of therapeutic benefit of peptide vacci...περισσότερα »
CNS infections in patients with hematological disorders
CNS infections in patients with hematological disorders (including allogeneic stem cell transplantation) -Guidelines of the Infectious Diseases Working Party (AGIHO) of the German Society of Hematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO): Diagnosis of CNS infections remains a great challenge in patients with hematological disorders since symptoms might both be masked and be mimicked by other conditions such as metabolic disturbances or consequences from antineoplastic treatment. Thus, awareness of this complication is crucial and any suspicion of a CNS infection should lead to timely and a... περισσότερα »
Primary and recurrent leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava
Role of surgery in the multimodal treatment of primary and recurrent leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava: Background The optimal treatment of leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the inferior vena cava (IVC) is still unclear, especially in the metastatic and/or recurrent setting. We herein evaluated the long-term outcome after aggressive management. Methods Eleven patients underwent surgery for primary LMS of the IVC between 2000 and 2012. The clinical, pathological, and survival data were reviewed. Results The IVC was managed by graft replacement in four cases, primary repair in four, and ... περισσότερα »
Denture Stomatitis
Evidence Regarding the Treatment of Denture Stomatitis: Abstract Denture stomatitis is a common inflammatory condition affecting the mucosa underlying complete dentures. It is associated with denture microbial biofilm, poor denture hygiene, poor denture quality, and nocturnal denture use. Numerous treatment methodologies have been used to treat stomatitis; however, a gold standard treatment has not been identified. The aim of this systematic review is to report on the current knowledge available in studies representing a range of evidence on the treatment of denture stomatitis.
Speech rate effects on the processing of conversational speech across the adult life spana)
Speech rate effects on the processing of conversational speech across the adult life spana): [image: cm_sbs_024_plain.png] This study investigates the effect of speech rate on spoken word recognition across the adult life span. Contrary to previous studies, conversational materials with a natural variation in speech rate were used rather than lab-recorded stimuli that are subsequently artificially time-compressed. It was investigated whether older adults' speech recognition is more adversely affected by increased speech rate compared to younger and middle-aged adults, and which in... περισσότερα »
Effects of age on speech and voice quality ratingsa)
Effects of age on speech and voice quality ratingsa): The quality of communication may be affected by listeners' perception of talkers' characteristics. This study examined if there were effects of talker and listener age on the perception of speech and voice qualities. Younger and older listeners judged younger and older talkers' gender and age, then rated speech samples on pleasantness, naturalness, clarity, ease of understanding, loudness, and the talker's suitability to be an audiobook reader. For the same talkers, listeners also rated voice samples on pleasantness, roughness, ... περισσότερα »
