Environment-dependent denoising autoencoder for distant-talking speech recognition

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 7 δευτερόλεπτα
Environment-dependent denoising autoencoder for distant-talking speech recognition: In this paper, we propose an environment-dependent denoising autoencoder (DAE) and automatic environment identification based on a deep neural network (DNN) with blind reverberation estimation for robust distant-talking speech recognition. Recently, DAEs have been shown to be effective in many noise reduction and reverberation suppression applications because higher-level representations and increased flexibility of the feature mapping function can be learned. However, a DAE is not adequate in mismat... περισσότερα »

On the Consequences of Purging and Linkage on Fitness and Genetic Diversity

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοEvolution of a geneΠριν από 10 δευτερόλεπτα
Using computer simulation we explore the consequences of linkage on the inbreeding load of an equilibrium population, and on the efficiency of purging and the loss of genetic diversity after a reduction in population size. We find that linkage tends to cause increased inbreeding load due to the built up of coupling groups of (partially) recessive deleterious alleles. It also induces associative overdominance at neutral sites but rarely causes increased neutral genetic diversity in equilibrium populations. After a reduction in population size, linkage can cause some delay both for ... περισσότερα »

Autophagy, Metabolism, and Cancer: Macroautophagy (autophagy hereafter) captures intracellular proteins and organelles and degrades them in lysosomes. The degradation breakdown products are released from lysosomes and recycled into metabolic and biosynthetic pathways. Basal autophagy provides protein and organelle quality control by eliminating damaged cellular components. Starvation-induced autophagy recycles intracellular components into metabolic pathways to sustain mitochondrial metabolic function and energy homeostasis. Recycling by autophagy is essential for yeast and mammals... περισσότερα »

BCL-2 Antagonism to Target Apoptosis: Despite significant improvements in treatment, cure rates for many cancers remain suboptimal. The rise of cytotoxic chemotherapy has led to curative therapy for a subset of cancers, though intrinsic treatment resistance is difficult to predict for individual patients. The recent wave of molecularly targeted therapies has focused on druggable-activating mutations, and is thus limited to specific subsets of patients. The lessons learned from these two disparate approaches suggest the need for therapies that borrow aspects of both, targeting biolo... περισσότερα »

Targeting DGK{alpha} in Cancer: Lipid kinases have largely been neglected as targets in cancer, and an increasing number of reports suggest diacylglycerol kinase alpha (DGKα) may be one with promising therapeutic potential. DGKα is one of 10 DGK family members that convert diacylglycerol (DAG) to phosphatidic acid (PA), and both DAG and PA are critical lipid second messengers in the plasma membrane. A host of important oncogenic proteins and pathways affect cancer cells in part through DGKα, including the c-Met and VEGF receptors. Others partially mediate the effects of DGKα inhibi...περισσότερα »

Hippo as a Tumor Suppressor: The Salvador–Warts–Hippo pathway controls cell fate and tissue growth. The main function of the Hippo pathway is to prevent YAP and TAZ translocation to the nucleus where they induce the transcription of genes involved in cell proliferation, survival, and stem cell maintenance. Hippo signaling is, thus, a complex tumor suppressor, and its deregulation is a key feature in many cancers. Recent mounting evidence suggests that the overexpression of Hippo components can be useful prognostic biomarkers. Moreover, Hippo signaling appears to be intimately linke... περισσότερα »

Moreover, genetic changes to the target are often the source of resistance to targeted agents. However, for the treatment of cancer, it is necessary that the therapy not only provide efficient bi... περισσότερα »
