Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 λεπτό
Ventricular fibrillation resulting from electrolyte imbalance reveals vipoma in MEN1 syndrome: AbstractSporadic VIPoma is an exceedingly rare tumor with an annual incidence of 1:10 million people worldwide, yet it is described in approximately 5 % of MEN1 patients. The majority of VIPomas are malignant and radical surgery is the best therapeutic option. A 58-year-old man presented with cardiocirculatory arrest due to ventricular fibrillation. The patient had a 3-month history of epigastric pain with diarrhea. After reanimation, laboratory data revealed severe hypokalemia and hyperc... περισσότερα »

Which Patients With Mantle Cell Lymphoma Do Not Need Aggressive Therapy

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
Which Patients With Mantle Cell Lymphoma Do Not Need Aggressive Therapy: AbstractMantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a heterogeneous disease, and it has been well-established over the last decade that a subset of patients can have indolent presentation. It is therefore important to adopt a risk-stratified approach in order to minimize unnecessary toxicities while maximizing survival and quality of life in selected MCL patients. This review provides an up-to-date assessment of clinical and pathologic entities associated with indolent disease course and delineates available biomarkers with... περισσότερα »

Neutrophil-mediated tumor cell survival & extravasation

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
[Research Articles]: Immune cells promote the initial metastatic dissemination of carcinoma cells from primary tumors. In contrast to their well-studied functions in the initial stages of metastasis, the specific roles of immunocytes in facilitating progression through the critical later steps of the invasion-metastasis cascade remain poorly understood. Here we define novel functions of neutrophils in promoting intraluminal survival and extravasation at sites of metastatic dissemination. We show that CD11b+/Ly6G+ neutrophils enhance metastasis formation via two distinct mechanism... περισσότερα »

Label-Free Neurosurgical Pathology with SRS imaging

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
Label-Free Neurosurgical Pathology with SRS imaging: The goal of brain tumor surgery is to maximize tumor removal without injuring critical brain structures. Achieving this goal is challenging since it can be difficult to distinguish tumor from non-tumor tissue. While standard histopathology provides information that could assist tumor delineation, it cannot be performed iteratively during surgery as freezing, sectioning, and staining of the tissue require too much time. Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy is a powerful label-free chemical imaging technology that enables ra... περισσότερα »

NQO1-dependent radiosensitization of head and neck cancer

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
NQO1-dependent radiosensitization of head and neck cancer: Ionizing radiation (IR) is a key therapeutic regimen for many head and neck cancers (HNCs). However, the 5-year overall survival rate for locally-advanced HNCs is ~50% and better therapeutic efficacy is needed. NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is over-expressed in many cancers, and β-lapachone (β-lap), an unique NQO1 bioactivatable drug, exploits this enzyme to release massive reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels that synergizes with IR to kill by programmed necrosis. β-Lap represents a novel therapeutic opportunity ...περισσότερα »

We investigated the chronometry of neural processes in frontal eye fields of macaques performing double-step saccade visual search in which a conspicuous target changes location in the array on a random fraction of trials. Durations of computational processes producing a saccade to original and final target locations (GO1 and GO2, respectively) are derived from response times (RT) on different types of trials. In these data, GO2 tended to be faster than GO1, demonstrating that inhibition of the initial saccade did not delay production of the compensated saccade. Here, we measured ... περισσότερα »

Binocular disparity is an important cue for depth perception. To correctly represent disparity, neurons must find corresponding visual features between the left- and right-eye images. The visual pathway ascending from V1 to inferior temporal cortex solves the correspondence problem. An intermediate area, V4, has been proposed to be a critical stage in the correspondence process. However, the distinction between V1 and V4 is unclear, because accumulating evidence suggests that the process begins within V1. In this article, we report that the pooled responses in macaque V4, but not ...περισσότερα »

When lifting novel objects, individuals' fingertip forces are influenced by a variety of cues such as volume and apparent material. This means that heavy-looking objects tend to be lifted with more force than lighter-looking objects, even when they weigh the same amount as one another. Expectations about object weight based on visual appearance also influence how heavy an object feels when it is lifted. For instance, in the "size-weight illusion," small objects feel heavier than equally weighted large objects. Similarly, in the "material-weight illusion," objects that seem to be m... περισσότερα »

Perceptual thresholds are commonly assayed in the laboratory and clinic. When precision and accuracy are required, thresholds are quantified by fitting a psychometric function to forced-choice data. The primary shortcoming of this approach is that it typically requires 100 trials or more to yield accurate (i.e., small bias) and precise (i.e., small variance) psychometric parameter estimates. We show that confidence probability judgments combined with a model of confidence can yield psychometric parameter estimates that are markedly more precise and/or markedly more efficient than ...περισσότερα »

Correlated gene expression encoding serotonin (5-HT) receptor 4 and 5-HT transporter in proximal colonic segments of mice across different colonization states and sexes

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοSwallowing and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)Πριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract The production and handling of serotonin (5-HT) is an important determinant of colonic motility and has been reported to be altered in gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Recent studies suggest that the intestinal microbiota and sex of the host can influence expression of genes involved in 5-HT biosynthesis and signaling. While expression of genes in serotonergic pathways has been shown to be variable, it remains unclear whether genes within this pathway are coregulated. As a first step in that direction, we investigated potential correl... περισσότερα »

Impact of electrical stimulation of the stomach on gastric distension-induced emesis in the musk shrew

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοSwallowing and Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)Πριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Background Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) is implicated as a potential therapy for difficult-to-treat nausea and vomiting; however, there is a lack of insight into the mechanisms responsible for these effects. This study tested the relationship between acute GES and emesis in musk shrews, an established emetic model system. Methods Urethane-anesthetized shrews were used to record emetic responses (monitoring intra-tracheal pressure and esophageal contractions), respiration rate, heart rate variability, blood pressure, and gastrointestinal electromyograms. We inves...περισσότερα »

Bone Resection Versus Setback in Reduction Malarplasty: A Quantitative Analysis of the Migration of the Summit of the Zygoma

Abstract Background We hypothesized that the amount of bone resection and setback together controls the effect of reducing the zygomatic body during reduction malarplasty; however, quantitative analyses of this movement are lacking. Methods A retrospective study of patients who underwent reduction malarplasty between Aug. 2013 and Jan. 2015 was performed. We used 3-dimensional computed tomography […]

Potential Safety Loophole of Fat Grafting in Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract Autologous fat grafting (AFG) accounts for 9.1 % of all cosmetic surgical procedures in the world. Its use has been increasing tremendously in breast reconstruction and produces satisfying outcomes. However, the lack of standard guidelines for routine screening protocols in breast cancer patients before and after AFG warrants consideration of the safety of AFG […]

περισσότερα »
