Head & neck reconstruction: Predictors of readmission

Unplanned hospital readmission following head and neck cancer surgery is common, occurring in 5.1–26.5% of patients, depending upon the head and neck subsite, complexity of surgery, patient population, and study methodology [1–13]. Unplanned readmissions have significant negative consequences including significantly increased cost of care [2,5], delay in initiating timely adjuvant therapy [14], and increased mortality [2,15,16]. As a result, unplanned hospital readmission for head and neck cancer patients has been proposed as a measure of quality care [16].
