Does Alcohol Consumption Affect the Risk for Parkinson’s Disease?

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 19 ώρες
A systematic review of the relevant literature from 2000-2014, from observational studies, found little evidence for either a positive or negative effect on PD risk from alcohol consumption. When weak associations were observed in some reports, the authors found that the studies were at greater risk of selection and recall bias, which could compromise the effects found. Sixteen articles that met the criteria for inclusion were identified. All were primary research articles, published in English in peer-reviewed journals. These studies had to include a comparison or control group ... περισσότερα »

Gaucher Disease May Protect Against Parkinson’s Disease-Related Color Visual Impairment

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 19 ώρες
"Consistent with previous studies, color discrimination was decreased in patients with PD. However, this study introduces new findings that relate to the impact of GD in the context of PD-related color discrimination. These findings may imply a 'protective effect' on color discrimination in those GD patients who also have PD, which probably is due to a sensory mechanism rather than a cognitive effect," explained lead investigator Deborah Elstein, PhD, of the Gaucher Clinic at Shaare Zedek Medical Center Jerusalem (Israel), which is the largest clinic of its kind, devoted solely to... περισσότερα »

Identification of Odorant Binding Proteins and Chemosensory Proteins in Antennal Transcriptomes of the Jumping Bristletail Lepismachilis y-signata and the Firebrat Thermobia domestica: Evidence for an Independent OBP-OR Origin: Chemosensory protein (CSP) and gustatory receptor genes have been identified in all major arthropod groups. However, odorant binding proteins (OBP) and olfactory receptor genes are insect specific, suggesting that both gene families originated after the Hexapoda*–*Crustacea split (~470 million years ago). The seemingly parallel diversification of OBP and ol... περισσότερα »

With a Bone-anchored Hearing Aid, One Good Ear Helps the Other: In early June 2014, Steve Blatt was riding his motorcycle to work along the same route he’d used for nearly 40 years. It was raining, and when his front tire hit an uneven spot in the road, his bike slid out from under him. He did two somersaults through the air and lost his helmet. When he hit the ground, he suffered a transverse fracture through his right temporal bone – the hardest bone in the body – a complex structure that houses the cochlear and vestibular end organs, the facial nerve, the carotid artery and t... περισσότερα »

*Retrovirology - Latest Articles* - Increased BST2 expression during simian immunodeficiency virus infection is not a determinant of disease progression in rhesus monkeys Background: Bone marrow stromal cell antigen 2 (BST2), also known as tetherin, HM1.24 or CD317 represents a type 2 integral membrane protein, which has been described to restrict the production of some enveloped viruses by inhibiting the virus release from the cell surface. This innate antiviral mechanism is counteracted by the HIV-1 viral factor Vpu, targeting BST2 for cellular degradation. Since antiviral BST2 act...περισσότερα »

Can nitric oxide induce migraine in normal individuals?: Introduction For many years, scientists have debated the possibility that an individual "migraine threshold" determines the likelihood with which individuals may express migraine attacks. Discussion Recent discoveries provided evidence for both genetic and environmental influences on individual migraine expression. Here, we reviewed and discussed the ability of nitric oxide to induce migraine-like attacks in n... περισσότερα »

Behavioral Analysis of Bitter Taste Perception in Drosophila Larvae: Insect larvae, which recognize food sources through chemosensory cues, are a major source of global agricultural loss. Gustation is an important factor that determines feeding behavior, and the gustatory receptors (Grs) act as molecular receptors that recognize diverse chemicals in gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs). The behavior of *Drosophila* larvae is relatively simpler than the adult fly, and a gustatory receptor-to-neuron map was established in a previous study of the major external larval head sensory organs... περισσότερα »

A Scent of Anxiety: Olfactory Context Conditioning and its Influence on Social Cues: Perception and evaluation of objects are highly dependent on surrounding contexts. Threatening contexts enhance processing of faces. Because odors are assumed to deliver strong contextual information, the present study aimed at demonstrating 1) that odors can constitute threat and safety contexts, and 2) consequently modulate the processing of faces presented in these contexts. Therefore, previously neutral odors were used as contextual stimuli in a context conditioning paradigm, resulting in an ol...περισσότερα »

Stimulation elicited by a real world field of view is related to the color, the intensity and the direction of the information reaching the eye: different spectral power distributions of light trigger different responses. An evaluation of the stimulation provided by the field of view can be performed by measuring the spectral radiance with a spectroradiometer and weighting this data with an efficiency curve. Different weights (physical, physiological and psychological) can lead to different analyses and consequently to different results. The proposed method allows an overall and s... περισσότερα »

ABSTRACT Recently, multiple μ-opioid receptor (MOR) isoforms have been identified that originate from a single gene, OPRM1; however, both their regulation and their functional significance are poorly characterized. The objectives of this study were to decipher, first, the regulation of alternatively spliced μ-opioid receptor isoforms and the spliceosome components that determine splicing specificity and, second, the signaling pathways utilized by particular isoforms both constitutively and following agonist binding. Our studies demonstrated that the expression of a particular splic... περισσότερα »

Carbonic anhydrase 9 mRNA/microRNA34a interplay in hypoxic human mammospheres

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοEvolutionary PhysiologyΠριν από 20 ώρες
Abstract The hypoxic environment is a crucial component of the cancer stem cell niche and it is capable of eliciting stem cell features in cancer cells. We previously reported that *SNAI2* up-regulates the expression of Carbonic Anhydrase iso-enzyme 9 (*CA9*) in hypoxic MCF7 cells. Here we show that *SNAI2* down-regulates *miR34a* expression in hypoxic MCF7 cell-derived mammospheres. Next, we report on the capability of *miR34a* to decrease *CA9* mRNA stability and CA9 protein expression. We also convey that the over-expression of cloned *CA9*-mRNA-3'UTR increases the mRNA half-lif... περισσότερα »

During the last two decades single-cell analysis (SCA) has revealed extensive phenotypic differences within homogenous cell populations. These phenotypic differences are reflected in the stochastic nature of gene regulation, which is often masked by qualitatively and quantitatively averaging in whole tissue analyses. The ability to isolate transcripts and investigate how genes are regulated at the single cell level requires highly sensitive and refined methods. This paper reviews different strategies currently used for SCA, including harvesting, reverse transcription, and amplific... περισσότερα »

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοNews in OtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 21 ώρες
A common characteristic of many cancer cells is that they suffer from oxidative stress. They, therefore, require effective redox regulatory systems to combat the higher levels of reactive oxygen species that accompany accelerated growth compared to the normal cells of origin. An elevated dependence on these systems in cancers suggests that targeting these systems may provide an avenue for retarding the malignancy process. Herein, we examined the redox regulatory systems in human liver and lung cancers by comparing human lung adenocarcinoma and liver carcinoma to their respective s...περισσότερα »

In this paper, a real-valued covariance vector sparsity-inducing method for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation is proposed in monostatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Exploiting the special configuration of monostatic MIMO radar, low-dimensional real-valued received data can be obtained by using the reduced-dimensional transformation and unitary transformation technique. Then, based on the Khatri–Rao product, a real-valued sparse representation framework of the covariance vector is formulated to estimate DOA. Scene classification, which consists of assigning images with semantic labels by exploiting the local spatial arrangements and structural patterns inside tiled regions, is a key problem in the automatic interpretation of optical high-spatial resolution remote sensing imagery. Many state-of-the-art methods, e.g., the bag-of-visual-words model and its variants, the topic models and unsupervised feature learning-based approaches, share similar procedures: patch sampling, feature learning and classification. Patch sampling is the first and a key procedure, and it has a considerable in... περισσότερα »

Family physicians’ intention to support women in making informed decisions about breast cancer screening with mammography: a cross-sectional survey

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 22 ώρες
Background: The net benefits of routine breast cancer screening with mammography have been questioned, and there is evidence to indicate that supporting women to make an informed decision about breast cancer screening with mammography is preferable. The aims of this study were to assess the intention of family physicians to provide women with this support and the determinants of this intention, and to identify factors that might influence family physicians adopting this behavior. Methods: Family physicians from the province of Quebec, Canada, attending a 45-min lecture on informed...περισσότερα »
