Antioxidant Supplements as Adjuvant Therapy
Efficacy and Interaction of Antioxidant Supplements as Adjuvant Therapy in Cancer Treatment: A Systematic Review: Oxidative stress is a key component in carcinogenesis. Although radiation produces reactive oxygen species, some anticancer agents such as alkylating agents, platinum and antitumor antibiotics exert cytotoxicity by generating free radicals. Nonenzymatic exogenous antioxidants such as vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols can quench ROS activity. However, whether antioxidants alter antitumor effects during radiotherapy and some types of chemotherapy remains unclear. In the... περισσότερα »

The pituitary TGF{beta}1 system as a novel target for the treatment of resistant prolactinomas
Prolactinomas are the most frequently observed pituitary adenomas and most of them respond well to conventional treatment with dopamine agonists (DAs). However, a subset of prolactinomas fails to respond to such therapies and is considered as DA-resistant prolactinomas (DARPs). New therapeutic approaches are necessary for these tumors. Transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) is a known… Continue reading The pituitary TGF{beta}1 system as a novel target for the treatment of resistant prolactinomas

Abstract Keratinocytes, in response to irritants, secrete pro-inflammatory mediators which recruit and activate immune and mesenchymal cells, including fibroblasts, to repair the skin. Fibroblasts respond by synthesising collagen and promoting the crosslinking extracellular matrix (ECM). We recently showed that the deletion of Rac1 in keratinocytes causes heightened inflammation due to aberrant crosstalk with immune cells. […]

It is well recognised that genomic, proteomic and biomarker studies require properly annotated and well-characterised biospecimens. Consequently, this necessitates biobanks to collect, store and distribute biospecimens under stringent quality control and assurance measures. However, despite this realisation, there remains a lack of standardisation in quality management among biobanks and consensus as to which quality indicators provide the optimal molecular diagnostic performance tools and information for biospecimens. Outcome of a new patient pathway for managing B3 breast lesions by vacuum-assisted biopsy: time to change current UK practice?
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 58 δευτερόλεπτα
Aims B3 lesions of the breast represent a difficult management dilemma. The umbrella term 'B3' incorporates lesions with little associated malignancy risk as well as lesions with significant risk of concurrent neoplasia. Diagnosis of B3 lesions in screening populations is largely made on needle core biopsy, which provides little tissue to adequately diagnose pathologically diverse lesions. The advent of vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) provides the multidisciplinary team with a more representative pathology sample to direct management. Clinical and laboratory characteristics of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) at relapse and the risk of acute incapacitation
There is limited published data on the mode of relapse presentation in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and the efficacy of routine outpatient monitoring in detecting relapse. In diffuse large B cell lymphoma, studies looking at postremission surveillance imaging found that the majority of relapses were detected at patient self-presentation;1 however, there is no similar data available for AML. Such information would be of relevance to all patients in occupations requiring medical checks for public safety reasons, such as pilots and public transport drivers, where the risk of acute i... περισσότερα »
Quality assessment and preservation of RNA from biobank tissue specimens: a systematic review

Having Two Ears Facilitates the Perceptual Separation of Concurrent Talkers for Bilateral and Single-Sided Deaf Cochlear Implantees.
Objectives: Listening to speech with multiple competing talkers requires the perceptual separation of the target voice from the interfering background. Normal-hearing listeners are able to take advantage of perceived differences in the spatial locations of competing sound sources to facilitate this process. Previous research suggests that bilateral (BI) cochlear-implant (CI) listeners cannot do so, and it is unknown whether single-sided deaf (SSD) CI users (one acoustic and one CI ear) have this ability. This study investigated whether providing a second ear via cochlear implantatio... περισσότερα »

An accurate bimaxillary repositioning technique using straight locking miniplates for the mandible-first approach in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery
Abstract Bimaxillary orthognathic surgery has been widely performed to achieve optimal functional and esthetic outcomes in patients with dentofacial deformity. Although Le Fort I osteotomy is generally performed before bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) in the surgery, in several situations BSSO should be performed first. However, it is very difficult during bimaxillary orthognathic surgery to maintain an accurate centric relation of the condyle and decide the ideal vertical dimension from the skull base to the mandible.
