Regarding “Circulatory dynamics of the cauda equina in lumbar canal stenosis using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging”

I read with interest the article by Kobayashi et al. in The Spine Journal October issue [1]. The occurrence of enhancement at the site of lumbar canal stenosis is an important one, and infrequently encountered in routine imaging of the lumbar spine, because contrast material is generally not given. When it does occur, it can be a source of confusion to the clinician and radiologist, who might ascribe a more ominous diagnosis of enhancing tumor or infection. The authors are to be commended for studying this topic. from Sports Medicine via xlomafota13 on Inoreader http://ift.tt/28MBW... περισσότερα »

Modulating the structure and function of an aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase cofactor by biotinylation Protein Structure and Folding

Arc1p is a yeast-specific tRNA-binding protein that forms a ternary complex with glutamyl-tRNA synthetase (GluRSc) and methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MetRS) in the cytoplasm to regulate their catalytic activities and subcellular distributions. Despite Arc1p not being involved in any known biotin-dependent reaction, it is a natural target of biotin modification. Results presented herein show that biotin modification […]

Transforming Growth Factor {beta} Mediates Drug Resistance by Regulating Expression of Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Kinase 4 in Colorectal Cancer Cell Biology

Drug resistance is one of the main causes of colon cancer recurrence. However, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms and availability of therapeutic options remain limited. Functional diversity of human mitochondrial J-proteins is independent of their association with the inner membrane presequence translocase Protein Synthesis and Degradation

Mitochondrial J-proteins play a critical role in governing Hsp70 activity and hence, are essential for organellar protein translocation and folding. In contrast to yeast which has a single J-protein Pam18, humans involve two J-proteins DnaJC15 and DnaJC19, associated with contrasting cellular phenotype, to transport proteins into the mitochondria. Mutation in DnaJC19 results in Dilated Cardiomyopathy […]

PKC epsilon Promotes Synaptogenesis through Membrane Accumulation of the Postsynaptic Density Protein PSD-95 Cell Biology

Protein kinase C epsilon (PKCε) promotes synaptic maturation and synaptogenesis via activation of synaptic growth factors such as BDNF, NGF, and IGF. However, many of the detailed mechanisms by which PKCε induces synaptogenesis are not fully understood. Accumulation of PSD-95 to the postsynaptic density (PSD) is known to lead to synaptic maturation and strengthening of […]

Structure and function of cross-class complexes of G protein-coupled secretin and angiotensin 1a receptors Protein Structure and Folding

However, the nature of these cross-class complexes has not been well characterized and their signaling properties have not been systematically […]

Nitric oxide/cGMP/PKG signaling pathway activated by M1-type muscarinic acetylcholine receptor cascade inhibits Na+-activated K+ currents in Kenyon cells

The interneurons of the mushroom body, known as Kenyon cells, are essential for the long-term memory of olfactory associative learning in some insects. Some studies have reported that nitric oxide (NO) is strongly related to this long-term memory in Kenyon cells. However, the target molecules and upstream and downstream NO signaling cascades are not completely understood. Here we analyzed the effect of the NO signaling cascade on Na+-activated K+ (KNa) channel activity in Kenyon cells of crickets (*Gryllus bimaculatus*). As individual neurons function within neural circuits, it is important to understand local microcircuits and larger network connections of identified neuronal types and understand how maladaptive changes in the BNST neural networks are induced by stress and drug abuse. However, due to limitations of classic anatomical and physiological methods, the local circuit organization of synaptic inputs to specific BNST neuron types is not well underst... περισσότερα »

Saccadic eye movements can be elicited by more than one type of sensory stimulus. In this study, we compared the prevalence and magnitude of auditory- and visually evoked activity in a structure implicated in oculomotor processing, the primate frontal eye fields (FEF). We recorded from 324 single neurons while 2 monkeys performed delayed saccades to visual or auditory targets. We found that 64% of FEF neurons were active on presentation of auditory... περισσότερα »

Although adjudicated youth receive health care while detained, many are disconnected from youth-serving institutions that may facilitate access to care when in the community. Examining the unique challenges impacting detention youth’s independent access to health services has […]

Delayed absorption of many (paracetamol, aspirin, other NSAIDs and zolmitriptan) but not all (sumatriptan, rizatriptan) drugs during migraine attacks and most likely normal gastric emptying outside attacks. A review

Background In most pharmacokinetic studies, the oral absorption of drugs is impaired during migraine attacks but exceptions occur. A study on gastric emptying using gastric scintigraphy indicated that gastric stasis also occurs interictally in migraine. These studies were reviewed critically. Results In seven studies, mainly investigating NSAIDs and analgesics, the early absorption of the drugs […]

Absent in melanoma 2 proteins in the development of cancer

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοMelanoma by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Recent studies utilizing chemical-induced colitis-associated and sporadic colon cancer in mouse models indicated a protective role for absent in melanoma 2 (Aim2) in colon epithelial cells. Accordingly, mutations in the human AIM2 gene have been found in colorectal cancer (CRC), and reduced expression of AIM2 in CRC is associated with its progression. Furthermore, the overexpression of AIM2 protein in human cancer cell lines inhibits cell proliferation. Interferon-inducible Aim2 and AIM2 are members of the PYHIN (PYRIN and HIN domain-containing) protein family and share ~57... περισσότερα »

Substantial lines of evidence from studies of human biology and evolutionary anthropology, including cross-cultural, cross-species, and psychobiological data, help explain the underlying reasons why breastfeeding mothers are inclined to sleep with their infants (1). While surely not an endpoint leading to any single assessment, conclusion or public (including clinical) health recommendation, species-wide biological and psychological data on breastfeeding mothers (as well as breastfed infants) at very least coalesce to give us a powerful beginning point for understanding how and wh... περισσότερα »

Role of Side Effects, Physician Involvement, and Patient Perception in Non-Adherence with Oral Bisphosphonates

Methods A cross-sectional patient survey of women who initiated therapy with risedronate or alendronate between […]

A review in the treatment of oncologic emergencies

Aim Oncologic emergencies are often categorized as a group of metabolic abnormalities associated with the diagnosis of cancer or the initiation of chemotherapy for treatment. In this review, we evaluate five oncologic emergencies: tumor lysis syndrome, […]

Outcomes of hospitalized neutropenic oncology patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections: focus on oral fluoroquinolone conversion

Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in neutropenic oncology patients. Few studies have been published in the last decade on treatment outcomes of neutropenic oncology patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia. In addition, there is a lack of data addressing the role of oral fluoroquinolones in this patient setting. […]

Initiation and preliminary evaluation of an oncology pharmacy training course for staff pharmacists

Introduction There is currently a disparity between oncology pharmacy job openings and PGY2 trained pharmacists completing residency training each year. As a result, pharmacists without specialized training in oncology are filling much needed oncology positions and may need on-the-job oncology training. To improve oncology knowledge among non-PGY2 trained pharmacists working in oncology positions, Novant Health […]
