Nasogastric tube check, easy or not?

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 2 δευτερόλεπτα
Nasogastric tube check, easy or not?: Description Our patient required nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding for poor nutritional intake. He was alert when NGT insertion occurred. This required two attempts due to coughing. On the second attempt, coughing was present throughout but settled gradually. NGT insertion may be tricky in the awake patient, especially if neurological deficits are present. Optimisation of position by sitting the patient upright and inserting the NGT horizontally and posteriorly should be undertaken. A correct insertion attempt should feel smooth, with minimal or no... περισσότερα »

Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome potentially induced by allopurinol and triggered by influenza vaccine

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 2 δευτερόλεπτα
DRESS syndrome potentially induced by allopurinol and triggered by influenza vaccine: Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, also known as drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DHIS), is an acute, potentially life-threatening disease that includes skin rash, fever, haematological abnormalities and multiorgan involvement. Although its aetiopathogenesis is not exactly known, it is thought that inefficient drug detoxification leading to the accumulation of drug reactive metabolites causes autoimmune responses in skin and some internal organs, alters ...περισσότερα »

West Nile virus-associated brachial plexopathy

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 2 δευτερόλεπτα
West Nile virus-associated brachial plexopathy: West Nile virus (WNV) is the most frequent cause of arbovirus infection in the USA. Only 20% of infected individuals are symptomatic. Less than 1% of symptomatic individuals display West Nile neuroinvasive disease. We report a rare case of WNV-associated brachial plexopathy in a young immunocompetent individual, without cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis or encephalitis. Additionally, there was subjective and objective improvement after high-dose corticosteroids. This case adds to the clinical spectrum of WNV neuroinvasive disease. The l...περισσότερα »

Uncharacteristic rapidly enlarging swelling of the anterior maxilla: extranodal diffuse large B cell lymphoma

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 3 δευτερόλεπτα
Clinical diagnostic dilemma in an uncharacteristic rapidly enlarging swelling of the anterior maxilla: extranodal diffuse large B cell lymphoma: Extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is infrequent in the oral cavity and constitutes 3.5% of oral cancers, and less than 2.2% of maxillofacial lymphomas. Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) accounts for 40% of NHL and has a 5-year survival rate of less than 30%. Early detection of extranodal NHL by dental personnel is extremely important as a delay in diagnosis can result in the cancer being diagnosed at an advanced stage and a poor pr...περισσότερα »

Agonist-evoked endocytosis of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) has been extensively studied. The mechanisms by which agonists stimulate mobilization and plasma membrane translocation of GPCRs from intracellular stores are unexplored. Protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR2) traffics to lysosomes, and sustained protease signaling requires mobilization and plasma membrane trafficking of PAR2 from Golgi stores. We evaluated the contribution of… Continue reading Protein Kinase D and G{beta}{gamma} Mediate Agonist-Evoked Translocation of Protease-activated Receptor-2 from the Golgi Appara... περισσότερα »

Protein Kinase D and G{beta}{gamma} Mediate Agonist-Evoked Translocation of Protease-activated Receptor-2 from the Golgi Apparatus to the Plasma Membrane Cell Biology

We evaluated the contribution of […]

The mind–muscle connection in resistance training: friend or foe?

Abstract The results of Calatayud et al. (Eur J Appl Physiol, 2015. doi: 10.1007/s00421-015-3305-7) indicate that focusing on the pectoralis major and triceps brachii muscles during bench press exercise selectively enhanced their activation, and thus suggest a training strategy. However, the authors did not discuss the well-established negative effects that focusing on specific muscle groups has on exercise performance. For proper perspective of the results and their practical utility, it is helpful to note the interplay between negative and positive effects of different focus cond... περισσότερα »

Insights into the C-terminal Peptide Binding Specificity of the PDZ domain of neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase. Characterization of the Interaction with the tight-junction protein Claudin-3 Cell Biology

Neuronal Nitric Oxide synthase, unlike its endothelial and inducible counterparts, displays a PDZ (PSD-95/Dlg/ZO-1) domain located at its N-terminus involved in subcellular targeting. The C-termini of various cellular proteins insert within the binding groove of this PDZ domain and determine the subcellular distribution of nNOS. The molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions are poorly understood since […]
