TRAINING SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL, NEURAL AND HYPERTROPHIC ADAPTATIONS TO EXPLOSIVE- VS. SUSTAINED-CONTRACTION STRENGTH TRAINING
Training specificity is considered important for strength training, although the functional and underpinning physiological adaptations to different types of training, including brief explosive contractions, are poorly understood. This study compared the effects of 12-wks of explosive-contraction (ECT, n=13) vs. sustained-contraction (SCT, n=16) strength training vs. control (CON, n=14) on the functional, neural, hypertrophic, and intrinsic contractile characteristics of healthy young men. Training involved 40 isometric repetitions (x3/wk): contracting as fast and hard as possible ... περισσότερα »
The accuracy and robustness of a simple algorithm to measure vessel diameter from B-mode ultrasound images.
Measurement of changes in arterial vessel diameter can be used to assess the state of cardiovascular health, but the use of such measurements as biomarkers is contingent upon the accuracy and robustness of the measurement. This work presents a simple algorithm for measuring diameter from B-mode images derived from vascular ultrasound. The algorithm is based upon Gaussian curve fitting and a Viterbi search process. We assessed the accuracy of the algorithm by measuring the diameter of a digital reference object (DRO) and ultrasound-derived images of a carotid artery. We also assess...περισσότερα »

Invited Commentary: Using Financial Credits as Instrumental Variables for Estimating the Causal Relationship Between Income and Health
Social epidemiologists are interested in determining the causal relationship between income and health. Natural experiments in which individuals or groups receive income randomly or quasi-randomly from financial credits (e.g., tax credits or cash transfers) are increasingly being analyzed using instrumental variable analysis. For example, in this issue of the *Journal*, Hamad and Rehkopf (*Am J Epidemiol*. 2016;000(00):0000–0000) used an in-work tax credit called the Earned Income Tax Credit as an instrument to estimate the association between income and child development. The impact of delayed surgical drainage of deep neck abscesses in adult and pediatric populations
[image: cover.gif?v=1&s=634ce17de2958347d854769c] Objectives/Hypothesis The conventional treatment for deep neck abscesses in adults is antibiotic therapy with surgical drainage, whereas in children there is debate about the role of surgical drainage versus conservative therapy. It is presently unclear if delayed surgical drainage negatively affects outcomes. Study Design We performed a multicenter, prospective, risk-adjusted cohort study of adult and pediatric patients with deep neck abscess who received incision and drainage within 7 days of admission in the American College of...περισσότερα »

Abstract Background In the Cameroonian traditional medicine, plants of the Capparidaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Liliaceae families are used to treat several metabolic diseases. These plants are rich in various compounds belonging to the glucosinolates and thiosulfinates family. Till date, very little studies have been done aiming at assessing the antioxidant and inflammatory properties of the essential […]

Effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the surface of composite restoratives during in-office tooth bleaching
Abstract The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the surface roughness and microhardness of various composite restoratives during in-office tooth bleaching. Five highly viscous composite restoratives and three flowable composite restoratives were investigated. Thirty cylindrical specimens of each material were made using Teflon molds. The specimens of each composite were randomly divided into three groups (*n* = 10). The picosecond laser for tattoo removal
Abstract The prevalence of tattoos continues to grow as modern society's stigma towards this form of body art shifts towards greater acceptance. Approximately one third of Americans aged 18–25 and 40 % of Americans aged 26–40 are tattooed. As tattoos continue to rise in popularity, so has the demand for an effective method of tattoo removal such as lasers. The various colors of tattoo inks render them ideal targets for specific lasers using the principle of selective photothermolysis. Traditional laser modalities employed for tattoo removal operate on pulse durations in the nanose...περισσότερα »
Laser and light-based treatments of venous lakes: a literature review
Abstract Venous lake is a benign vascular malformation commonly seen in elderly patients, typically arising in sun-exposed areas of the body. Patients often seek treatment to prevent recurrent bleeding or because they find the lesion cosmetically unacceptable. Venous lake may negatively affect quality of life, due to the cosmetic disfigurement it can create and the resulting psychological distress. Traditional treatments, such as surgical excision, cryosurgery, sclerotherapy, and electrocoagulation, result in varying degrees of success and can cause discomfort. Laser- and light-bas... περισσότερα »

A Footwear–Foot–Knee Computational Platform for Exploring Footwear Effects on Knee Joint Biomechanics
Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate comprehensive knee joint responses to wedged footwear intervention with lateral inclination angles of 0°, 5°, and 10° at three stance instants in a gait cycle. A footwear–foot–knee finite element model reconstructed from magnetic resonance images of a healthy male subject was validated through a cadaveric experiment and used to predict knee joint loading. The model was driven by the ground reaction force and subject-specific muscle forces to simulate three stance instants, namely the first peak, valley, and second peak of the g... περισσότερα »
Identification of Source Signals by Estimating Directional Index of Phase Coupling in Multivariate Neural Systems
Abstract In the field of biomedical engineering, identification of source signals between multichannel signals is an important technique for measuring the functional connectivity of a variety of brain states and pathological cases such as seizures. It is likely to occur in a weak coupling condition, where the neural actions interact with each other on the level of phase, whereas their amplitudes remain practically uncoupled. Hence, source signal identification by analyzing the directional interactions from a phase-coupled complex neural network is of interest. This study proposes a... περισσότερα »
