*A second family with CATSHL syndrome: Confirmatory report of another unique FGFR3 syndrome.* Am J Med Genet A. 2016 May 3; Authors: Escobar LF, Tucker M, Bamshad M Abstract Here we describe the second reported family with the CATSHL syndrome, a condition resulting from a unique mutation in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) gene. Our family confirms the consistent and unique phenotype of this condition, and the specificity of the mutation in FGFR3. The CATSHL syndrome appears to be an autosomal dominant disorder with full penetrance. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ...περισσότερα »

DESIGN: Part 1. Trends over time for age at CI surgery (N = 802) and age at hearing aid (HA) fitting (n = 487) were examined with regard to periods before, during, and after newborn hearing screening (NHS). Part 2. Demographic factors were explored for 417 children implanted under 3 years of age. Part 3. Pre-implant steps for the first 20 children to receive CIs under 12 ... περισσότερα »

Abstract Background Most of cleft lip and palate patients have the esthetic and functional problems of midfacial deficiencies due to innate developmental tendency and scar tissues from repeated operations. In these cases, maxillary protraction is required for the harmonious facial esthetics and functional occlusion. Case presentation A 7-year old boy had been diagnosed as severe maxillary constriction due to unilateral complete cleft lip and palate. The author tried to correct the secondary deformity by early distraction osteogenesis with the aim of avoiding marked psychological ... περισσότερα »

Modeled Analysis of Entrance of Colloid Suspensions into the Middle Ear Cavity

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 10 δευτερόλεπτα
Modeled Analysis of Entrance of Colloid Suspensions into the Middle Ear Cavity: Otic suspensions have a positive effect on the duration of otorrhea in children with a tympanostomy tube. It is still questionable how eardrops reach the middle ear. We hypothesized that otic suspensions do not pass the tympanostomy tube if the middle ear is dry but pass by diffusion when wet. The median concentration of Evans blue (colorant) in the middle ear was <15.6 mg/mL (lower limit of quantification) when diffusion was impossible but 45.3 µg/mL when diffusion was possible (*P* = .01). When the ou... περισσότερα »

The accuracy of radiography in detecting strictures at the pharyngoesophageal junction is unknown. Our aim was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of videofluoroscopy in detecting strictures at the pharyngoesophageal junction prior to endoscopic dilatation in a consecutive series of HNC survivors with dysphagia. The telomere proteins in tumorigenesis and clinical outcomes of oral squamous cell carcinoma: Telomeres are the distal ends of linear eukaryotic chromosomes and are composed of tandemly repeated DNA elements 5′-TTAGGG-3′. These terminal sequences are capped by specific telomeric proteins and adopt a particular three-dimensional conformation called the T-loop. The formation of this loop is made possible by the existence of a telomeric 3′ single-stranded overhang that invades the double-stranded part of the telomeric DNA. These features prevent the telomeres from being recognized as d...περισσότερα »

Two important but unanswered questions are to what extent and how do animals with such ears exploit spatial cues in the perceptual analysis of noisy and complex acoustic scenes? This study of Cope’s gray treefrog (*Hyla chrysoscelis*) investigated how the inherent directionality of internally coupled ears contributes to spatial release from masking. We used laser vibrometry and ...περισσότερα »

*Symptomatic lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas: successful treatment without pancreatic resection.* J Surg Case Rep. 2016;2016(4) Authors: Ruggero JM, Prakash SN Abstract Lymphoepithelial cysts (LECs) of the pancreas are rare benign lesions with unknown pathogenesis. LECs are true cysts that mimic pseudocysts and cystic neoplasms making diagnosis challenging. We report a case of a symptomatic LEC of the pancreas in a 67-year-old man who had severe epigastric pain. Workup including computed tomography and endoscopic ultrasound were non-diagnostic. Pituitary Aromatase P450 May Be Involved in Maintenance of the Population of Luteinizing Hormone-Positive Pituitary Cells in Mice

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
As aromatase P450 is located in several pituitary cells, testosterone can be transformed into 17β-estradiol in the gland by the enzyme. The possible role of this transformation in pituitary function remains to be elucidated, but some evidence suggests a physiological and pathophysiological role for pituitary aromatase. To determine its relevance in the modulation of pituitary function, mainly associated with reproduction, luteinizing hormone (LH)-positive cells in the hypophysis of female and male aromatase knockout (ArKO) mice were studied. In all LH-positive cells, significant i... περισσότερα »
