Hereditary lactate dehydrogenase M-subunit deficiency with late-developing pustular psoriasis-like lesions
Abstract Hereditary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) M-subunit deficiency is very rare and we have found reports of close to a dozen cases in the published work, two of which were associated with pustular psoriasis-like lesions. We report a third case of pustular psoriasis-like eruptions associated with LDH M-subunit deficiency, which occurred 24 years after the diagnosis of LDH M-subunit deficiency. These cases indicate that abnormal activity of LDH can induce pustular psoriatic lesions in the long term. Some patients with symptoms of hereditary LDH M-subunit deficiency have antecedent... περισσότερα »
Effects of maxacalcitol ointment on skin lesions in patients with psoriasis receiving treatment with adalimumab
[image: cover.gif?v=1&s=f51958433f8c881f439a7dbf] Abstract Adalimumab is a biologic that is very effective for treatment of psoriasis. However, recalcitrant or recurrent lesions sometimes occur during treatment. Maxacalcitol is an active vitamin D3 ointment that is effective in treatment of psoriasis. Topical therapy may be beneficial in treatment of recalcitrant or recurrent lesions during treatment with systemic therapy, but there is little evidence on this topic. We investigated the effect of maxacalcitol on skin lesions during treatment with adalimumab in patients with psoria... περισσότερα »
Intramuscular triamcinolone acetonide: An undervalued option for refractory alopecia areata
Abstract Severe alopecia areata (AA) can have an unpredictable clinical course and become refractory to contact immunotherapy. Novel treatment options include low-dose interleukin-2 and Janus kinase inhibitors; however, these treatments are still under investigation. Therefore, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of intramuscular (i.m.) triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) as a rescue therapy for refractory AA. We retrospectively analysed efficacy, adverse effects and relapse rate of i.m. TAC monthly in 27 patients with refractory AA. We defined AA as refractory if the patient showed an... περισσότερα »

New Directions in Gaucher Disease
ABSTRACT In Gaucher disease (GD) mutant lysosomal acid β-glucocerebrosidase fails to properly hydrolyze its substrate, glucosylceramide, which accumulates in the lysosomes. Due to its phenotypic heterogeneity, GD has been classified into type 1, non-neuronopathic, and types 2 and 3, the neuronopathic forms, based on the primary involvement of the central nervous system. Neuroinflammation and necroptotic… Continue reading New Directions in Gaucher Disease

Decomposing mechanisms of abnormal saccade generation in schizophrenia patients: Contributions of volitional initiation, motor preparation, and fixation release
Abstract Clinical and theoretical models suggest deficient volitional initiation of action in schizophrenia patients. Recent research provided an experimental model of testing this assumption using saccade tasks. However, inconsistent findings necessitate a specification of conditions on which the deficit may occur. The present study sought to detect mechanisms that may contribute to poor performance. Sixteen… Continue reading Decomposing mechanisms of abnormal saccade generation in schizophrenia patients: Contributions of volitional initiation, motor preparation, and fixation release
Solitary cutaneous focal mucinosis: A clinicopathological study of 11 cases of soft fibroma-like cutaneous mucinous lesions
Abstract Cutaneous mucinoses encompass a variety of cutaneous disorders. Cutaneous focal mucinosis (CFM) was originally described as an asymptomatic solitary lesion characterized by abundant focal cutaneous mucin deposits. However, multiple focal mucinous lesions associated with systemic diseases have also been designated as CFM. Our clinicopathological study of 11 cases of solitary lesions confirmed that CFM… Continue reading Solitary cutaneous focal mucinosis: A clinicopathological study of 11 cases of soft fibroma-like cutaneous mucinous lesions

Our clinicopathological study of 11 cases of solitary lesions confirmed that CFM is a unique primary cutaneous mucinosis unrelated to mucinosis-associated systemic diseases. We suggest calling this group of CFM lesions "solitary CFM" to distinguish them fr... περισσότερα »

JNK modulates EGFR/HER2 targeted therapy acquired resistance
Resistance limits the effectiveness of receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK)-targeted therapies. Combination therapies targeting resistance mechanisms can considerably improve response, but will require an improved understanding of when particular combinations will be effective. One common form of resistance is bypass signaling, wherein RTKs not targeted by an inhibitor can direct reactivation of pathways essential for survival. While this mechanism of resistance is well appreciated, it is unclear which downstream signaling events are responsible. Here, we apply a combined experimental- ... περισσότερα »

Calcium-sensing receptor and breast cancer
Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) contributes to the development and metastatic progression of breast cancer by promoting hypercalcemia, but it is not known how PTHrP is upregulated during breast tumorigenesis. Here we report a central role in this process for CaSR, a calcium-sensing receptor which enables cellular responses to changes in extracellular calcium, through studies of CaSR-PTHrP interactions in the MMTV-PymT transgenic mouse model of breast cancer and in human breast cancer cells. CaSR activation stimulated PTHrP production by breast cancer cells in vitro and... περισσότερα »
