Superficial middle cerebral vein connection to the cavernous sinus
is not infrequent in brain arteriovenous malformations: an argument against their congenital origin?: Abstract IntroductionThe aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the superficial middle cerebral vein (SMCV) is frequently absent or fails to connect with the cavernous sinus (CS) in the presence of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), a frequently reported argument for the congenital origin of brain AVMs. MethodsThe SMCV was retrospectively compared between patients with a brain AVM and a control group. Population-based approaches to genetics of migraine
Population-based approaches to genetics of migraine: Background While the most accurate diagnosis of migraine typically requires a clinical interview guided by strict diagnostic criteria, an alternative approach that ascertains migraine by questionnaire in population-based settings has been instrumental in the discovery of common genetic variants influencing migraine risk. This result may be surprising. Population-based approaches are often criticized for limited ability to distinguish migraine from other forms of primary headache. It is thus useful to revisit prevailing ideas about... περισσότερα »

Coffee consumption and the risk of cancer
in the Norwegian Women and Cancer (NOWAC) Study: AbstractAn association between coffee consumption and cancer has long been investigated. Coffee consumption among Norwegian women is high, thus this is a favorable population in which to study the impact of coffee on cancer incidence. Information on coffee consumption was collected from 91,767 women at baseline in the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study. These information were applied until follow-up information on coffee consumption, collected 6–8 years after baseline, became available. Multiple imputation was performed as a method fo... περισσότερα »

Negative influence of programmed death-1-ligands on the survival of esophageal cancer patients treated with chemotherapy
Negative influence of programmed death-1-ligands on the survival of esophageal cancer patients treated with chemotherapy: [image: cover.gif?v=1&s=851fabfc577da741d1c2873e] Abstract The programmed death-1/programmed death-1ligands (PD-1/PD-Ls) pathway plays an important role in immunological tumor evasion. However, clinical significance of the PD-Ls (L1 and L2) expression in esophageal cancer treated with chemotherapy has not been fully investigated. We examined the expression of PD-Ls of the primary tumors obtained from 180 esophageal cancer patients who underwent radical resecti... περισσότερα »
Treatment of in-transit and metastatic melanoma in two patients treated with ipilimumab and topical imiquimod.
Treatment of in-transit and metastatic melanoma in two patients treated with ipilimumab and topical imiquimod.: Checkpoint blockade inhibitors have revolutionized the treatment of metastatic melanoma. Despite the success of these agents in improving the overall survival of patients with metastatic melanoma, not all patients achieve clinical benefit, leaving room for improvement. The presence of cutaneous metastases in patients with metastatic melanoma provides the unique opportunity to treat the cutaneous lesions with a local modality while simultaneously treating systemic disease w... περισσότερα »

Tp53/ p53 Status in Keratoacanthomas
Tp53/ p53 Status in Keratoacanthomas: Abstract Background Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a common keratinocytic skin neoplasm that typically develops rapidly and undergoes complete spontaneous regression. Since the pro-apoptotic p53 protein may be involved in the lifecycle of KA, we studied the p53 status throughout the main stages of KA that include proliferation, maturation and regression in a large series of lesions. Methods One-hundred and twenty four keratoacanthomas were characterized with respect to age of the lesions both clinically and histopathologically, in addition to phenotypi... περισσότερα »
Microtubules, polarity and vertebrate neural tube morphogenesis
Microtubules, polarity and vertebrate neural tube morphogenesis: Abstract Microtubules (MTs) are key cellular components, long known to participate in morphogenetic events that shape the developing embryo. However, the links between the cellular functions of MTs, their effects on cell shape and polarity, and their role in large-scale morphogenesis remain poorly understood. Here, these relationships were examined with respect to two strategies for generating the vertebrate neural tube: bending and closure of the mammalian neural plate; and cavitation of the teleost neural rod. Eosinophilic Drug Allergy
Eosinophilic Drug Allergy: AbstractWhile peripheral or tissue eosinophilia may certainly characterize drug eruptions, this feature is hardly pathognomonic for a medication-induced etiology. While delayed drug hypersensitivity reactions with prominent eosinophilic recruitment have been typically classified as type IVb reactions, their pathophysiology is now known to be more complex. Eosinophilic drug reactions have a diversity of presentations and may be benign and self-limited to severe and life-threatening. The extent of clinical involvement is also heterogeneous, ranging from iso... περισσότερα »

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly heterogeneous disease that is the result of tobacco and/or alcohol abuse or infection with high-risk Human papillomaviruses. Despite the fact that HPV positive HNSCC cancers form a distinct clinical entity with better treatment outcome, all HNSCC are currently treated uniformly with the same treatment modality. At present, biologic basis of these different outcomes and their therapeutic influence are areas of intense investigation. In this review, we will summarize the molecular basis for this different outcome, novel treat... περισσότερα »
