The Australian Work Exposures Study: Occupational Exposure to Lead and Lead Compounds

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 41 δευτερόλεπτα
Introduction: The aims of this study were to produce a population-based estimate of the prevalence of work-related exposure to lead and its compounds, to identify the main circumstances of exposures, and to collect information on the use of workplace control measures designed to decrease those exposures. Methods: Data came from the Australian Workplace Exposures Study, a nationwide telephone survey which investigated the current prevalence and circumstances of work-related exposure to 38 known or suspected carcinogens, including lead, among Australian workers aged 18–65 years. ...περισσότερα »

A Comparison of the {beta}-Substitution Method and a Bayesian Method for Analyzing Left-Censored Data

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 41 δευτερόλεπτα
Classical statistical methods for analyzing exposure data with values below the detection limits are well described in the occupational hygiene literature, but an evaluation of a Bayesian approach for handling such data is currently lacking. Here, we first describe a Bayesian framework for analyzing censored data. We then present the results of a simulation study conducted to compare the β-substitution method with a Bayesian method for exposure datasets drawn from lognormal distributions and mixed lognormal distributions with varying sample sizes, geometric standard deviations (GS...περισσότερα »

Evidence that Bacteriophage {lambda} Lysogens May Induce in Response to the Proton Motive Force Uncoupler CCCP

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 41 δευτερόλεπτα
We describe a genetic β-galactoside reporter system using a disk diffusion assay on MacConkey Lactose agar petri plates to monitor maintenance of the bacteriophage prophage state and viral induction in *Escherichia coli* K-12. Evidence is presented that the phage major lytic promoters, *pL* and *pR*, are activated when cells containing the reporters are exposed to the energy poison carbonyl cyanide *m*-chlorophenyl hydrazine, CCCP. This uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation inhibits ATP synthesis by collapsing the proton motive force. Expression of the lytic promoters in response ... περισσότερα »

Current Injection And Receptor-Mediated Excitation Produce Similar Maximal Firing Rates In Hypoglossal Motor Neurons

The maximum firing rates of motor neurons (MNs) activated in response to synaptic drive appear to be much lower than that elicited by current injection. It could be that the decrease in input resistance associated with increased synaptic activity (but not current injection) might blunt overall changes in membrane depolarization and thereby limit spike-frequency output. An Analysis of the truncated Bid- and ROS-dependent Spatial Propagation of Mitochondrial Permeabilization Waves during Apoptosis Computational Biology

Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that is essential for the efficient elimination of surplus, damaged and transformed cells during metazoan embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis. Situated at the interface of apoptosis initiation and execution, mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP) represents one of the most fundamental processes during apoptosis signal transduction. It […]

Regulation of Histone Acetylation by Autophagy in Parkinson Disease Cell Biology

Parkinson disease (PD) is the most common age-dependent neurodegenerative movement disorder. Accumulated evidence indicates both environmental and genetic factors play important roles in PD pathogenesis, but the potential interaction between environment and genetics in PD etiology remains largely elusive. Here, we report that PD related neurotoxins induce both expression and acetylation of multiple sites of […]

Factors predicting pasireotide responsiveness in somatotroph pituitary adenomas resistant to first-generation somatostatin analogues: an immunohistochemical study

Aim To gather data regarding factors predicting responsiveness to pasireotide in acromegaly. Patients and methods SSTR2a, SSTR3, SSTR5, AIP, Ki-67 and the adenoma subtype were evaluated in somatotroph adenomas from 39 patients treated post-operatively with somatostatin analogues (SSAs). A standardized SSTR scoring system was applied (scores 0–3). All patients received first-generation SSAs, and 11 resistant… Continue reading Factors predicting pasireotide responsiveness in somatotroph pituitary adenomas resistant to first-generation somatostatin analogues: an immunohistochemical study

Primary inverted papilloma of the middle ear with intracranial invasion

orlsfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Sfakianakis G.AlexandrosΠριν από 2 ώρες
Abstract Background Primary inverted papillomas of the middle ear are extremely rare tumors, with only few cases published in the literature. They have a characteristic epithelium surface inversion to the inside of the stroma. Inverted papillomas are benign lesions but have a high propensity of recurrence, local aggressiveness, and association with malignancy. Methods We present… Continue reading Primary inverted papilloma of the middle ear with intracranial invasion

Abdominal adipocyte populations in women with visceral obesity

orlsfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Sfakianakis G.AlexandrosΠριν από 2 ώρες
Background Visceral obesity is independently related to numerous cardiometabolic alterations, with adipose tissue dysfunction as a central feature. Objective To examine whether omental (OM) and subcutaneous (SC) adipocyte size populations in women relate to visceral obesity, cardiometabolic risk factors and adipocyte lipolysis independent of total adiposity. Design and methods OM and SC fat samples were… Continue reading Abdominal adipocyte populations in women with visceral obesity

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to determine clinicopathological correlates of outcome among patients with parotid gland cancer. Methods The medical records of 126 patients treated by surgery for localized parotid cancer were retrospectively reviewed to identify the clinicopathologic correlates of recurrence-free survival (RFS) according to histologic grade. Results Multivariate analysis revealed that… Continue reading Clinicopathologic factors associated with recurrence in low- and high-grade parotid cancers

Does Stress-Related Growth Really Matter for Adolescents Day-to-Day Adaptive Functioning?

orlsfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Sfakianakis G.AlexandrosΠριν από 2 ώρες
Adolescent stress-related growth refers to enhancement in an adolescent’s cognitive-affective or social resources as a result of experiencing stressors. We tested whether adolescents reporting high levels of stress-related growth showed superior adaptation outcomes on a day-to-day basis. Participants (n = 91; females = 46, age = 14) completed a questionnaire measure of stress-related growth and… Continue reading Does Stress-Related Growth Really Matter for Adolescents Day-to-Day Adaptive Functioning?
