Action-outcome relationships are represented differently by medial prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortex neurons during action execution

Internal representations of action-outcome relationships are necessary for flexible adaptation of motivated behavior in dynamic environments. Prefrontal cortex (PFC) is implicated in flexible planning and execution of goal-directed actions, but little is known about how information about action-outcome relationships is represented across functionally distinct regions of PFC. Here, we observe distinct patterns of action-evoked single […]

Amelogenin Exon4 Forms a Novel miRNA That Directs Ameloblast and Osteoblast Differentiation

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOroFacial Medicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Amelogenins constitute the major portion of secretory enamel matrix proteins and are known to be highly alternative spliced. Of all the alternatively spliced forms of amelogenins, exon4 is most commonly spliced out. Our analyses of the exon4 sequence led us to hypothesize that when spliced out, exon4 may generate a novel mature miRNA. To explore this possibility, we used in vivo mouse models (wild-type and *Amel* knockout mice) and in vitro cell culture to investigate the presence and function of a mature miRNA derived from exon4 (miR-exon4). When ameloblast-like cells (LS8) were ...περισσότερα »

The NOTCH3 score: a pre-clinical CADASIL biomarker in a novel human genomic NOTCH3 transgenic mouse model with early progressive vascular NOTCH3 accumulation

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Introduction CADASIL (Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy) is a hereditary small vessel disease caused by mutations in the *NOTCH3* gene, leading to toxic NOTCH3 protein accumulation in the small- to medium sized arterioles. The accumulation is systemic but most pronounced in the brain vasculature where it leads to clinical symptoms of recurrent stroke and dementia. There is no therapy for CADASIL, and therapeutic development is hampered by a lack of feasible clinical outcome measures and biomarkers, both in mouse mode... περισσότερα »

Fibrin glue is used successfully in many areas of surgery to facilitate wound healing, and to reduce perioperative bleeding and postoperative scarring. In the head and neck it can be beneficial after resection of oral cancer and neck dissection,1 and in the treatment of sialoceles and refractory parotid fistulas.2 It is also showing promise in orthopaedics, as its angiogenic and osteogenic properties can improve perfusion in femoral avascular necrosis.3,4 from OroFacial Medicine via ola Kala on Inoreader http://ift.tt/1ToFfrL via IFTTT

Image-guided nasal endoscopic drainage of an orbital superior subperiosteal abscess

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOroFacial Medicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
A 48-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with swelling and erythema of the right upper eyelid for 4 days. Computed tomography showed a superiorly-based subperiosteal orbital abscess together with paranasal sinusitis. She was managed medically, but symptoms did not improve, so we drained the abscess using image-guided intranasal endoscopy. Her symptoms began to improve 2 days after drainage, and her recovery was uneventful. Drainage of an orbital subperiosteal abscess should be considered if there are ophthalmological symptoms such as visual disturbances, raised in... περισσότερα »
