Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) : Eosinophil Quantitated Urine Kinetic
Eosinophil Quantitated Urine Kinetic: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic disease that requires long-term medical management and monitoring. The eosinophil count determined during esophageal biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosis and monitoring of EoE. Although markers of eosinophil degranulation correlate with symptoms, eosinophil counts do not correlate. Development of a noninvasive, cost-effective biomarker of eosinophil activation for the evaluation of EoE is an unmet medical need.
Presenting symptoms of chronic granulomatous disease
Highlighting the variability in presenting symptoms of chronic granulomatous disease: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare hereditary disorder of the immune system characterized by a deficiency of the oxidative burst function in phagocytes. Individuals with the disease have a mutation in the NADPH oxidase enzyme, which normally produces large amounts of superoxide anions within the phagocytic cell. Without NADPH oxidase, only small amounts of these anions are produced. In CGD, catalase-positive bacteria and fungi neutralize hydrogen peroxide via catalase and survive in the ...περισσότερα »
Rituximab in a patient with splenic marginal zone lymphoma and acquired angioedema
Rituximab in a patient with splenic marginal zone lymphoma and acquired angioedema: Acquired angioedema (AAE) is a rare disorder with more than 100 cases reported in the literature.1 As initially described by Caldwell et al2 in 1972, two main features characterize AAE: acquired C1 inhibitor (C1-INH) deficiency and hyperactivation of the classic complement pathway. Because C1-INH is responsible for the breakdown of bradykinin, acquired C1-INH deficiency leads to increases in bradykinin, which increase vascular permeability and manifest clinically as recurrent angioedema.3–5
Rivaroxaban-induced leukocytoclastic vasculitis
Rivaroxaban-induced leukocytoclastic vasculitis: Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV), also called cutaneous small-vessel vasculitis, is a disorder characterized by neutrophilic inflammation predominantly limited to the superficial cutaneous postcapillary venules.1 It usually presents as a palpable nonblanching purpuric rash that may be associated with pruritus, pain, and burning, without any apparent systemic or extracutaneous involvement.2,3 The cutaneous manifestations appear at the lower legs and buttocks but sometimes may present at the trunks and upper extremity.
A new patient-operated sampling device for measurement of aeroallergens
A new patient-operated sampling device for measurement of aeroallergens: A recent publication and editorial letter1,2 in this journal have drawn attention to the fact that dust collection is widely used for collection of material for testing asthmatic patient exposure to allergens for purely practical reasons, despite extensive recommendations that the airborne compartment of allergens is relevant to actual patient exposure. Barnes et al1 used capture of allergens by the air filter in homes run for a period of months to assess allergens in the air. They reported the widespread prese... περισσότερα »

Long-term prophylactic C1 inhibitor concentrate treatment of patients with hereditary angioedema
Real-life experience with long-term prophylactic C1 inhibitor concentrate treatment of patients with hereditary angioedema: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disease with recurrent angioedema that usually becomes symptomatic early in life. When the upper airways are involved, asphyxiation can occur. Complement C1 inhibitor (C1INH) deficiency causes an uncontrolled activation of the contact system with excessive bradykinin formation. Current consensus statements on HAE treatment suggests that long-term prophylactic treatment is warranted if the patient cannot achieve adeq... περισσότερα »

T regulatory and Th17 cells in chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps
T regulatory and Th17 cells in chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps: Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is categorized into 2 types based on the absence (CRSsNP) and presence of nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Although CRSsNP patients lack nasal polyps, the mucosa may show variable degrees of polypoid change. This raises the question of whether or not the classification system is an over simplification and that CRSsNP and CRSwNP only represent 2 phenotypic extremes along a broader spectrum of immunologically different disease processes. To investigate this, adaptive and innate immune cel...περισσότερα »

However, most did not know whether their patients had a living will, and some professionals even failed to respect such instructions despite knowledge of the existence of advance directives. Improvements in health professional education in this field… Continue reading Advance directives in intensive care: Health professional competences
Diagnostic yield of 24-hour esophageal manometry in non-cardiac chest pain
Abstract Background In the past, ambulatory 24-h manometry has been shown useful for the evaluation of patients with non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP). With the diagnostic improvements brought by pH-impedance monitoring and high-resolution manometry (HRM), the contribution of ambulatory 24-h manometry to the diagnosis of esophageal hypertensive disorders has become uncertain. Our aim was to assess the additional diagnostic yield of ambulatory manometry to HRM and ambulatory pH-impedance monitoring in this patient population. Methods All patients underwent 24-h ambulatory pressure-pH... περισσότερα »
Cortico-muscular communication for motor control of the tongue in humans: a review
Publication date: Available online 26 March 2016 *Source:*Journal of Oral Biosciences Author(s): Hitoshi Maezawa BackgroundSophisticated voluntary movements of the tongue are essential to speech articulation and swallowing in humans. Voluntary tongue movements are finely controlled by communications between the cortex and tongue muscles. A large number of previous studies have reported that functional connections between the cortex and muscles are reflected by cortico-muscular coherence (CMC), which is measured between electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) and... περισσότερα »
Fermentation, Vol. 2, Pages 8: Syngas Biomethanation in a Semi-Continuous Reverse Membrane Bioreactor (RMBR)
Syngas biomethanation is a potent bio-conversion route, utilizing microorganisms to assimilate intermediate gases to produce methane. However, since methanogens have a long doubling time, the reactor works best at a low dilution rate; otherwise, the cells can be washed out during the continuous fermentation process. In this study, the performance of a practical reverse membrane bioreactor (RMBR) with high cell density for rapid syngas biomethanation as well as a co-substrate of syngas and organic substances was examined in a long-term fermentation process of 154 days and compared ... περισσότερα »
