Selection and expansion of natural killer cells for NK cell-based immunotherapy: AbstractNatural killer (NK) cells have been used in several clinical trials as adaptive immunotherapy. The low numbers of these cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) have resulted in various approaches to preferentially expand primary NK cells from PBMC. While some clinical trials have used the addition of interleukin 2 (IL-2) to co-stimulate the expansion of purified NK cells from allogeneic donors, recent studies have shown promising results in achieving in vitro expansion of NK cells to... περισσότερα »

3D modeling of a given site is an important activity for a wide range of applications including urban planning, as-built mapping of industrial sites, heritage documentation, military simulation, and outdoor/indoor analysis of airflow. Point clouds, which could be either derived from passive or active imaging systems, are an important source for 3D modeling. Such point clouds need to undergo a sequence of data processing steps to derive the necessary information for the 3D modeling process. Segmentation is usually the first step in the data processing chain. This paper presents a r... περισσότερα »

3D sensors such as lidars, stereo cameras, time-of-flight cameras, and the Microsoft Kinect are increasingly found in a wide range of applications, including gaming, personal robotics, and space exploration. In some cases, pattern recognition algorithms for processing depth images can be tested using actual sensors observing real-world objects. In many situations, however, it is common to test new algorithms using computer-generated synthetic images, as such simulations tend to be faster, more flexible, and less expensive than hardware tests. The tapetum is a single layer of secretory cells which encloses the anther locule and sustains pollen development and maturation. Upon apoptosis, the remnants of the tapetal cells, consisting mostly of lipids and proteins, fill the pits of the sculpted exine to form the bulk of the pollen coat. This extracellular matrix forms an impermeable barrier that protects the male gametophyte from water loss and UV light. It also aids pollen adhesion and hydration and retains small signaling compounds involved in pollen–stigma communication. In this study, we have updated the list of the po... περισσότερα »

Rare gynaecological emergency: massive intraperitoneal haemorrhage from spontaneous rupture of a superficial vessel on a large leiomyoma

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Uterine leiomyomas rarely present as gynaecological emergencies. We report a case of a 29-year-old nulliparous woman, with a negative pregnancy test, who presented with collapse and an admission haemoglobin count of 68 g/L. Urgent CT of the abdomen revealed a 14x19x10 cm uterine fibroid and intraperitoneal free fluid. Emergency laparotomy confirmed massive intraperitoneal haemorrhage from a large serosal vessel on top of a 19 cm subserosal fibroid. A myomectomy was performed, preserving this patient's fertility. Histopathology confirmed a benign leiomyoma with hydropic changes. ...περισσότερα »

Kleptomania following hypoxic-ischaemic damage to bilateral caudate nuclei

Description We report a case of a 40-year-old woman, with no history of mental illness or substance abuse, who underwent cosmetic plastic surgery. In the immediate postoperative period, she presented somnolence, disorientation, apathy and memory deficits. Neurological investigation with brain MRI (figure 1) and cerebral perfusion scintigraphy (figure 2) was conducted. The former revealed bilateral nucleocapsular hypoxic-ischaemic injury, while the latter demonstrated relative hypoperfusion in the frontal lobes (figure 2A), anterior portions of the cingulate gyri (figure 2B), basa... περισσότερα »

Lipoprotein lipase deficiency presenting with neonatal perianal abscesses

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Lipoprotein lipase (LPL), a member of the triglyceride lipase gene family, is synthesised by parenchymal cells of the heart, skeletal muscle and adipose tissues before being transported to luminal surfaces of vascular endothelial cells to exert its main physiological function to hydrolyse plasma lipoproteins. LPL deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, resulting in severe hypertriglyceridaemia from birth. The effect of marked hypertriglyceridaemia on the immune function in children has not been described. We present a case of a neonate with LPL deficiency and grossly el... περισσότερα »

*Medoidshift clustering applied to genomic bulk tumor data.* BMC Genomics. 2016;17 Suppl 1:6 Authors: Roman T, Xie L, Schwartz R Abstract Despite the enormous medical impact of cancers and intensive study of their biology, detailed characterization of tumor growth and development remains elusive. This difficulty occurs in large part because of enormous heterogeneity in the molecular mechanisms of cancer progression, both tumor-to-tumor and cell-to-cell in single tumors. Advances in genomic technologies, especially at the single-cell level, are improving the situation, but these ... περισσότερα »
