Purinergic homomeric P2X3 and heteromeric P2X2/3 receptors are ligand-gated cation channels activated by ATP. Both receptors are predominantly expressed in nociceptive sensory neurons and an increase in extracellular ATP concentration under pathological conditions such as tissue damage or visceral distension induces channel opening, membrane depolarization and initiation of pain signaling. Hence these receptors are considered […]

The establishment of cell-cell contacts between presynaptic GABAergic neurons and their postsynaptic targets initiates the process of GABAergic synapse formation. GABAA receptors (GABAARs), the main postsynaptic receptors for GABA, have been recently demonstrated to act as synaptogenic proteins that can single-handedly induce the formation and functional maturation of inhibitory synapses. To establish how the subunit […]

Toll-like receptor-3 (TLR3) senses double-stranded RNA intermediates produced during hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication, leading to activation of interferon-regulatory factor-3 (IRF3) and NF-κB and subsequent antiviral and proinflammatory responses. Yet, how this TLR3-dependent pathway operates in hepatocytes is unclear. Upon fractionating cultured hepatocytes into various cellular organelles, we observed that TLR3 predominantly resides in endolysosomes […]

Animal steroid hormones regulate gene transcription through genomic pathways by binding to nuclear receptors. These steroid hormones also rapidly increase intracellular calcium and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and activate the protein kinase C (PKC) and protein kinase A (PKA) nongenomic pathways. However, the function and mechanism of the nongenomic pathways of the steroid hormones […]

Lower Eyelid Reconstruction: Lower eyelid defects are common, and a systematic approach to reconstruction of the lower eyelid is required. Attention to the bilaminar eyelid anatomy and canthal support structures, with efforts to maintain functionally important structures, such as the lacrimal canalicular system, is vital to appropriate lower eyelid reconstruction. Techniques of advancement and rotation flaps and grafting of skin and mucosa are mainstays of lower eyelid reconstruction. An appropriate armamentarium of techniques allows for optimal surgical results. [image: First page ... περισσότερα »
Periorbital Surgery
Periorbital Surgery: Periorbital rejuvenation requires a careful understanding of the interplay between the eyelids, brow, forehead, and midface. Reversing periorbital signs of aging requires a correction of volume loss, soft tissue ptosis, and skin changes. Many surgical and nonsurgical techniques exist to treat the aging periorbital region; however, careful consideration of the patient’s complaints and existing anatomy is critical to achieving a safe and esthetically pleasing outcome. [image: First page of article]
Upper Lid Blepharoplasty
Upper Lid Blepharoplasty: Upper lid blepharoplasty is a common procedure for restoration and rejuvenation of the upper eyelids that can be performed safely and reliably. Understanding the anatomy and aging process of the brow–upper lid aesthetic unit along with properly assessing the excesses and deficiencies of the periorbital region helps to formulate an appropriate surgical plan. Volume deficiency in the aging upper lid may require corrective augmentation. Preexisting asymmetries and ptosis need to be identified and discussed before surgery. Injectable Adjunctive Procedures for Cosmesis and Function
Injectable Adjunctive Procedures for Cosmesis and Function: The role of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers in the periocular region continues to expand. In addition to cosmetic uses in the periocular region, HA fillers are increasingly being used to correct eyelid malpositions. This is changing the perspective on the anatomic changes responsible for these malpositions. [image: First page of article]
Periorbital Rejuvenation
Periorbital Rejuvenation: Numerous nonsurgical options for periorbital rejuvenation are available and can be used alone or as adjuncts to other nonsurgical and surgical options. Topicals, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion therapy, along with neuromodulators and fillers, can be used to enhance the appearance of the periorbital region.
Upper Eyelid Reconstruction
Upper Eyelid Reconstruction: Reconstruction of the upper eyelid is complicated because the eyelid must retain mobility, flexibility, function, and a suitable mucosal surface over the delicate cornea. Defects of the upper eyelid may be due to congenital defects or traumatic injury or follow oncologic resection. This article focuses on reconstruction due to loss of tissue. Multiple surgeries may be needed to reach the desired results, addressing loss of tissue and then loss of function. Each defect is unique and the laxity and availability of surrounding tissue vary. Functional and Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
Functional and Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery: I am excited to present this issue solely devoted to the upper and lower eyelids and surrounding periorbital tissues. Rather than addressing only cosmetic procedures, we wanted to address the periorbital region from both a reconstructive and an esthetic approach. It is my firm belief that each of these approaches to the periorbital region enhances the knowledge and skill of the periorbital surgeon.
Correction of Eyelid Crease Asymmetry and Ptosis
Correction of Eyelid Crease Asymmetry and Ptosis: Upper eyelid ptosis and crease abnormalities can lead to significant cosmetic deformity. An intimate knowledge of the anatomic structures responsible for eyelid height, contour, and pretarsal show will allow precise surgical correction. [image: First page of article]
Evaluation of Eyelid Function and Aesthetics
Evaluation of Eyelid Function and Aesthetics: The eyes and periocular area are the central aesthetic unit of the face. Facial aging is a dynamic process that involves skin, subcutaneous soft tissues, and bony structures. An understanding of what is perceived as youthful and beautiful is critical for success. Knowledge of the functional aspects of the eyelid and periocular area can identify pre-preoperative red flags. [image: First page of article]
Lower Lid Malposition
Lower Lid Malposition: Lower lid malposition is a common yet demanding problem that both functional and cosmetic eyelid surgeons will face. It encompasses a spectrum of lower eyelid conditions ranging from lower lid retraction to frank ectropion and entropion. Local Injection of Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Fibrin Glue Promotes the Repair of Bone Atrophic Nonunion In Vivo
Abstract Introduction This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of local injection of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) and fibrin glue in the treatment of atrophic nonunion in an animal model. Methods Thirty-six male Lewis rats were randomly assigned into three groups: Group A (control group), Group B (atrophic nonunion group), and Group C (experimental group). All the rats underwent femoral osteotomy of the right hind limb, and stabilized with a custom-designed external fixator. Atrophic nonunion of the rats in Group B and C was induced by cauterization of the periosteum and ... περισσότερα »
Biomechanical optimization of subject-specific implant positioning for femoral head resurfacing to reduce fracture risk
Peri-prosthetic femoral neck fracture after femoral head resurfacing can be either patient-related or surgical technique-related. The study aimed to develop a patient-specific finite element modelling technique that can reliably predict an optimal implant position and give minimal strain in the peri-prosthetic bone tissue, thereby reducing the risk of peri-prosthetic femoral neck fracture. The subject-specific finite element modelling was integrated with optimization techniques including design of experiments to best possibly position the implant for achieving minimal strain for fe... περισσότερα »
Regenerative approaches for the cornea
Abstract The cornea is the transparent front part of the eye that transmits light to the back of the eye to generate vision. Loss of corneal transparency, if irreversible, leads to severe vision loss or blindness. For decades, corneal transplantation using human donor corneas has been the only option for treating corneal blindness. Despite recent improvement in surgical techniques, donor cornea transplantation remains plagued by risks of suboptimal optical results and visual acuity, immune rejection and eventually graft failure. Furthermore, the demand for suitable donor corneas i... περισσότερα »
Update on the pharmacological treatment of adult myositis
Abstract The management of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) remains a challenge given the systemic features beyond active myositis. That is, recognizing the inflammatory arthropathy, varying dermatomyositis rashes, and overt and occult features of interstitial lung disease in addition to myositis adds to the complexity of diagnosis and treatment of IIM. However, clinicians now have available many more immunosuppressive drugs as well as biologic agents for use in patients with myositis and other autoimmune diseases. Here, the use of these agents is reviewed and ... περισσότερα »

Mesonephric (Wolffian) Pseudoendometrioid Carcinoma of the Broad Ligament Arising From a Papillary Cystadenoma
This article describes the case of a 70-year-old woman with an adnexal cystadenocarcinoma located in the right broad ligament and displaying a striking resemblance to a well-differentiated endometrioid adenocarcinoma. The uniqueness of this pseudoendometrioid carcinoma lies in the fact that its mesonephric nature is revealed by the origin from a papillary cystadenoma of the broad ligament, where remnants of the mesonephric duct are seated, and the immunohistochemical profile, particularly a uniform negativity for estrogen and progesterone receptors, apical-luminal positivity for C... περισσότερα »
