Optimal adaptive IMRT strategy to spare the parotid glands in oropharyngeal cancer

Optimal adaptive IMRT strategy to spare the parotid glands in oropharyngeal cancer: In oropharyngeal cancer adaptive radiation therapy (ART), this study aimed to quantify the dosimetric benefit of numerous replanning strategies, defined by various numbers and timings of replannings, with regard to parotid gland (PG) sparing. Abstract Purpose In oropharyngeal cancer adaptive radiation therapy (ART), […]

Radiation-induced creatinine clearance reduction and renal parenchymal volume atrophy

Long-term observations of radiation-induced creatinine clearance reduction and renal parenchymal volume atrophy: The kidney is a dose-limiting organ for upper abdominal radiotherapy. In this study, radiation-induced kidney injury represented by changes of creatinine clearance (Ccr) and renal parenchymal volume measured by computed tomography (CT) were evaluated by analysing dose–volume histograms (DVHs) in patients with primary […]

Ipilimumab for the treatment of patients with metastatic melanoma

Effectiveness, toxicity, and economic evaluation of ipilimumab for the treatment of patients with metastatic melanoma in the Spanish outpatient setting: To evaluate the effectiveness and toxicity profile of ipilimumab treatment and to examine the cost-effectiveness relation in a real-world sample of patients with metastasic melanoma. This was a multicenter, observational, retrospective cohorts study. To assess […]

Ethyl-2-amino-pyrrole-3-carboxylates are novel potent anticancer agents that affect tubulin polymerization, induce G2/M cell-cycle arrest, and effectively inhibit soft tissue cancer cell growth

h in vitro: Microtubules are known to be one of the most attractive and validated targets in cancer therapy. However, the clinical use of drugs that affect the dynamic state of microtubules has been hindered by chemoresistance and toxicity issues. Accordingly, the development of novel agents that target microtubules is needed. Here, we report the […]

Antitumoural activity of a cytotoxic peptide of Lactobacillus casei peptidoglycan

and its interaction with mitochondrial-bound hexokinase: In a previous study, we reported the cytotoxic activity against various tumour cells of the peptidoglycan of Lactobacillus casei. To isolate the most active components, we performed column-chromatography separation of the peptidoglycan complex and tested the related fractions for their cytotoxic activity. The most active fractions were then lyophilized […]

HER3 targeting sensitizes HNSCC to cetuximab cell PDX models

Purpose:Our previous work suggested that HER3 inhibition sensitizes HNSCC to EGFR inhibition with cetuximab. This study aimed to define the role of HER3 in cetuximab resistance and the anti-tumor mechanisms of EGFR/HER3 dual targeting in HNSCC. Experimental Design:We treated cetuximab-resistant HNSCC UMSCC1-C and parental UMSCC1-P cell lines with anti-EGFR antibody cetuximab, anti-HER3 antibody MM-121, and […]

Myc modulation by HDACi in cancer

Purpose: Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) are promising anticancer drugs. Although some HDACi have entered the clinic, the mechanism(s) underlying their tumor selectivity are poorly understood. Experimental Design/Results: Using gene expression analysis, we define a core set of 6 genes commonly regulated in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) blasts and cell lines. c-Myc, the most prominently modulated, […]

DNA methylation biomarkers and prostate cancer prognosis

Purpose: Aside from Gleason sum few factors accurately identify the subset of prostate cancer (PCa) patients at high risk for metastatic progression. We hypothesized that epigenetic alterations could distinguish prostate tumors with life-threatening potential. Experimental Design: Epigenome-wide DNA methylation profiling was performed in surgically resected primary tumor tissues from a population-based (n = 430) and […]

Anti-PD-1, anti-TIM-3, and radiation in glioma model

Introduction: Checkpoint molecules like programmed death-1 (PD-1) and T cell immunoglobulin mucin-3 (TIM-3) are negative immune regulators that may be upregulated in the setting of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Combined PD-1 blockade and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) have been shown to improve antitumor immunity and produce long-term survivors in a murine glioma model (1) . However, tumor-infiltrating […]

A novel molecular subtype of stage I lung adenocarcinoma

Purpose: The National Lung Cancer Screening Trial has confirmed that lung cancer mortality can be reduced if tumors are diagnosed early, i.e. at stage I. However, a substantial fraction of stage I lung cancer patients still develop metastatic disease within 5 years from surgery. Prognostic biomarkers are therefore needed to identify patients at risk of […]

XPO1 inhibition synergizes with chemotherapy in AML

Purpose: Selinexor, a selective inhibitor of XPO1, is currently being tested as single agent in clinical trials in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, considering the molecular complexity of AML, it is unlikely that AML can be cured with monotherapy. Therefore we asked whether adding already established effective drugs such as Topoisomerase (Topo) II inhibitors to […]

Summary Background Microdermabrasion is a nonchemical superficial resurfacing procedure that removes the stratum corneum. Because it is a somewhat subtle procedure, it may be difficult to demonstrate its cosmetic benefit. Objectives To assess the efficacy of microdermabrasion in treatment of melasma, postacne scarring, striae distensae, and photoaging by a series of microdermabrasion sittings through clinical, histometric, and histopathologic analysis. Patients and Methods The study was conducted on 38 patients constituting four groups (melasma, acne scars, striae destinsae, and p... περισσότερα »

Non-surgical organ preservation strategies for locally advanced laryngeal tumors: what is the Italian attitude? Results of a national survey on behalf of AIRO and AIOM: Abstract Chemoradiotherapy is the treatment mostly used as organ preservation (OP) strategy worldwide in advanced laryngo-hypopharyngeal cancer. a retrospective study: Abstract Some chemotherapeutic agents cause cardiotoxic effects including reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and occasionally congestive heart failure. Anthracyclines and HER2 monoclonal antibodies are common offenders, but clinical practice data on LVEF changes, risk factors and acute recovery is lacking. We retrospectively examined the electronic medical record at an academic medical center for receipt of anthracyclines and/or trastuzumab from 2000 to 2013 in cancer patients. Patient characteristics and serial LVEF assessments were col... περισσότερα »

Abstract Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among gynecological malignancies, and high grade serous ovarian carcinoma is the most common and most aggressive subtype. Recently, it was demonstrated that cAMP mediates protein kinase A-independent effects through Epac (exchange protein directly activated by cAMP) proteins. Epac proteins, including Epac1 and Epac2, are implicated in several diverse cellular responses, such as insulin secretion, exocytosis, cellular calcium handling and formation of cell–cell junctions. Several reports document that Epac1 could play vital role... περισσότερα »
