IJMS, Vol. 17, Pages 61: Effect of Acetyl Group on Mechanical Properties of Chitin/Chitosan Nanocrystal: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 7 δευτερόλεπτα
Chitin fiber is the load-bearing component in natural chitin-based materials. In these materials, chitin is always partially deacetylated to different levels, leading to diverse material properties. In order to understand how the acetyl group enhances the fracture resistance capability of chitin fiber, we constructed atomistic models of chitin with varied acetylation degree and analyzed the hydrogen bonding pattern, fracture, and stress-strain behavior of these models. We notice that the acetyl group can contribute to the formation of hydrogen bonds that can stabilize the crystall... περισσότερα »

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 7 δευτερόλεπτα
Kawasaki disease (KD) primarily affects children <5 years of age (75%–80%) and is currently the leading cause of acquired heart disease in developed nations. Even when residing in the West, East Asian children are 10 to 20 times more likely to develop KD. We hypothesized cultural variations influencing pediatric mercury (Hg) exposure from seafood consumption may mediate ethnic KD risk among children in the United States. Hospitalization rates of KD in US children aged 0–4 years (n = 10,880) and blood Hg levels in US children aged 1–5 years (n = 713) were determined using separate U... περισσότερα »

Advanced wastewater treatment using membranes are popular environmental system processes since they allow reuse and recycling. However, fouling is a key limiting factor and so proprietary systems such as Avanti's RPU-185 Flexidisks membrane bioreactor (MBR) use novel rotating membranes to assist in ameliorating it. In earlier research, this rotating process was studied by creating a simulation model based on first principles and traditional fouling mechanisms. In order to directly compare the potential benefits of this rotational system, this follow-up study was carried out using A... περισσότερα »

Many applications in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require energy consumption to be minimized and the data delivered to the sink within a specific delay. A usual solution for reducing energy consumption is duty cycling, in which nodes periodically switch between sleep and active states. By increasing the duty cycle interval, consumed energy can be reduced more. However, a large duty cycle interval causes a long end-to-end (E2E) packet delay. As a result, the requirement of a specific delay bound for packet delivery may not be satisfied. In this paper, we aim at maximizing the du... περισσότερα »

Infiltrating angiolipoma of the chest wall: a rare clinical entity: Angiolipoma is a rare variant of lipoma. Infiltrating chest wall angiolipoma usually presents as painful subcutaneous lesions. There are only a handful of cases reported in the literature. Malignancy is suspected in the differential diagnosis, and hence a tissue diagnosis is needed to rule out an underlying malignancy. Symptomatic infiltrating angiolipoma warrants surgical excision. We report a case of an infiltrating angiolipoma of the chest wall, which was successfully treated with surgical excision.

However, the impact of IR on the immune response is currently being defined. Local and distant relapse after radiotherapy often occurs. The current rationale for the use of IR is based on direct cytotoxicity to cancer cells; however, recent studies have shown that reduction of tumor burden following ablative (large-dose) IR largely depends on type I IFN signaling and CD8+ T-cell response. The crossroads of autoimmunity and immunodeficiency: Lessons from polygenic traits and monogenic defects

Autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases are outcomes of a dysfunctional immune system and represent 2 sides of the same coin. Multiple single-gene defects have been identified, resulting in rare diseases with features of both autoimmunity and immunodeficiency. On the other hand, more common autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, show a polygenic […]

Abstract In laboratory dogs, aging leads to a decline in various cognitive domains such as learning, memory and behavioural flexibility. However, much less is known about aging in pet dogs, i.e. dogs that are exposed to different home environments by their caregivers. We used tasks on a touchscreen apparatus to detect differences in various cognitive… Continue reading Aging effects on discrimination learning, logical reasoning and memory in pet dogs

Differential changes and interactions of autonomic functioning and sleep architecture before and after 50 years of age

orlsfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Sfakianakis G.AlexandrosΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract We hypothesize that the time when age-related changes in autonomic functioning and in sleep structure occur are different and that autonomic functioning modulates sleep architecture differently before and after 50 years of age. Sixty-eight healthy subjects (aged 20 to 79 years old, 49 of them women) were enrolled. Correlation analysis revealed that wake after… Continue reading Differential changes and interactions of autonomic functioning and sleep architecture before and after 50 years of age

Cell-Autonomous Brown-Like Adipogenesis of Preadipocytes from Retinoblastoma Haploinsufficient Mice

orlsfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Sfakianakis G.AlexandrosΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Mechanisms behind the emergence of brown adipocyte-like (brite or beige) adipocytes within white adipose tissue (WAT) are of interest. Retinoblastoma protein gene (Rb) haploinsufficiency associates in mice with improved metabolic regulation linked to a greater capacity for fatty acid oxidation and thermogenesis in WAT. We aimed to explain a feasible mechanism of WAT-to-BAT remodeling… Continue reading Cell-Autonomous Brown-Like Adipogenesis of Preadipocytes from Retinoblastoma Haploinsufficient Mice
