Laryngeal ultrasound and vocal fold movement in the pediatric cardiovascular intensive care unit: Objectives/Hypothesis Vocal fold motion impairment (VFMI) is a known sequela of cardiovascular surgery. The gold standard for the evaluation of vocal fold movement is flexible nasolaryngoscopy (FNL). Although safe, FNL does cause measurable physiologic changes. Noxious stimuli in cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) neonates may cause imbalance between the pulmonary and systemic circulations and potentially circulatory collapse. The goals of this project were to determine the acc...περισσότερα »

The American legal system is adversarial. (1) It is a contest in which two or more parties assume opposing viewpoints. Accusations and demands are made, evidence developed and presented, and arguments made. All this proceeds according to statutory rules or common law. Finally, the “Trier of Fact,” typically a jury or judge, assesses the facts and arguments in play and renders a decision as guided, again, by a set of rules that have been developed and refined over decades and even centuries of law. T follicular regulatory (Tfr) cells are a subpopulation of Treg cells that have adopted the T follicular helper cell program to localize to the B-cell follicle. Intravascular clearance of disseminating Cryptococcus neoformans in the brain can be improved by enhancing neutrophil recruitment in mice

Extrapulmonary dissemination of *Cryptococcus neoformans* (*C. neoformans*) is one of the most critical steps in the development of meningoencephalitis. Here, we report that clearance of the disseminating *C. neoformans* occurs within the brain microvasculature. Interestingly, the efficiency of the intravascular clearance in the brain is reduced compared to that in the lung. Intravascular clearance is mainly mediated by neutrophils, and complement C5a receptor signaling is crucial for mediating neutrophil recruitment in the vasculature. *C. neoformans*-stimulated actin polymeriza... περισσότερα »
Interaction of the LILRB1 inhibitory receptor with HLA class Ia dimers
Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 26 δευτερόλεπτα
Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor subfamily B member 1 (LILRB1) has been reported to interact with a wide spectrum of HLA class I (HLA-I) molecules, albeit with different affinities determined by allelic polymorphisms and conformational features. HLA-G dimerization and the presence of intracellular Cys residues in HLA-B7 have been shown to be critical for their recognition by LILRB1. We hypothesized that dimerization of classical HLA class Ia molecules, previously detected in exosomes, might enhance their interaction with LILRB1. A soluble LILRB1-Fc fusion protein and a sens... περισσότερα »

Clinical and cytological study of Abstract ObjectiveThe study was conducted to investigate the role of qat and smoking habits on the prevalence of visible and cytological abnormalities in the oral mucosa among Yemenites. MethodsWe recruited 30 non-smoking and 30 smoking Yemenites chewing qat unilaterally for at least 5 years. We inspected oral cavities for the presence of lesions and took brush biopsies from the buccal mucosa/gingiva of the chewing/non-chewing region. ResultsAll visible oral lesions were flat and homogeneous, and cytological changes were detected frequently...περισσότερα »

Prevalence of periodontitis in individuals with human leukocyte antigens (HLA) A9, B15, A2, and B5: Abstract ObjectiveHuman leukocyte antigens (HLA) have been associated with periodontitis. Previous studies revealed HLA-A9 and HLA-B15 as potential susceptibility factors, while HLA-A2 and HLA-B5 might have protective effects. The aim of the study was to verify these associations in a group of HLA-typed blood donors with previously unknown periodontal status. Materials and methodsIn four German centers, 140 blood donors with known HLA class I status were enrolled and allocated to...περισσότερα »

Pancreatic cancer risk tied to specific mouth bacteria: The presence of certain bacteria in the mouth may reveal increased risk for pancreatic cancer and enable earlier, more precise treatment, report investigators. Pancreatic cancer patients are known to be susceptible to gum disease, cavities, and poor oral health in general, say the study authors. That vulnerability led the research team to search for direct links between the makeup of bacteria driving oral disease and subsequent development of pancreatic cancer, a disease that often escapes early diagnosis and causes 40,000 US d... περισσότερα »

Rate discrimination, gap detection and ranking of temporal pitch in cochlear implant users: AbstractCochlear implant (CI) users have poor temporal pitch perception, as revealed by two key outcomes of rate discrimination tests: (i) rate discrimination thresholds (RDTs) are typically larger than the corresponding frequency difference limen for pure tones in normal hearing listeners, and (ii) above a few hundred pulses per second (i.e. the “upper limit” of pitch), CI users cannot discriminate further increases in pulse rate. Both RDTs at low rates and the upper limit of pitch vary acr... περισσότερα »

Intravascular clearance of disseminating Cryptococcus neoformans in the brain can be improved by enhancing neutrophil recruitment in mice
Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα

Based on a large prospective study we hypothesized that MACI are associated with cardioembolism.
