Recurrent G12V pathogenic mutation in adenomatoid odontogenic tumours

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 15 δευτερόλεπτα
The adenomatoid odontogenic tumour (AOT) is a non-aggressive encapsulated tumour, being usually diagnosed in association with an unerupted permanent maxillary canine [1,2]. There are scarce reports of multiple AOTs [3–5] and a patient with Schimmelpenning syndrome (SS) with AOT was reported [6]. SS is characterized by sebaceous nevi, associated with ipsilateral abnormalities of the central nervous system, resulting from postzygotic autosomal dominant HRAS or KRAS lethal mutations that survive by somatic mosaicism [7].from #ORL via xlomafota13 on Inoreader http://ift.tt/1YLbC7gvi...περισσότερα »

Atmosphere, Vol. 7, Pages 45: Soot Nanoparticles Could Partake in Nucleation of Biogenic Particles in the Atmosphere: Using Fullerene as a Model Compound

The detection of existence of fullerenes (C60 and C70) makes it necessary to explore whether soot nanoparticles can participate in new nanometer-sized particle formation and growth in the atmosphere. This study describes a theoretical investigation at multiple levels on the role of the fullerenes (as model compounds to represent nanoparticles of soot) in the formation of complexes with a common atmospheric nucleating precursor (sulfuric acid, SA) and a biogenic organic acid (cis-pinonic acid, CPA), as well as initial growth of nano-sized biogenic aerosols. In this paper, we report an analysis of pressed paper in terms of porosity and permeability. Previously, we reported a pressed paper that exhibits decreased porosity and permeability. Additionally, its applications into programmed sample delivery as well as flow rate control were reported. However, there is a need for a theoretical analysis of pressed paper in terms of porosity and permeability for a more precise design principle and its applications because porosity and permeability are important factors in determining fluidic behavior. Here, we propose a theoretical model for an...περισσότερα »

Methods. This anatomical variation of the unilaterally absent FCR was found upon dissection during a carpometacarpal arthroplasty of the thumb. Results. Upon the discovery of an absent FCR tendon, we proceeded with a simple trapeziectomy. C...περισσότερα »

HPV status is associated with altered PIWI-interacting RNA expression pattern in head and neck cancer

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 13 δευτερόλεπτα
HPV status is associated with altered PIWI-interacting RNA expression pattern in head and neck cancer: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) affects over 550,000 patients worldwide each year [1]. Tobacco and alcohol consumption, together with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are the main etiological factors [2–4]. Many studies have found that patients with HPV-positive HNSCC have a better prognosis, with increased survival and less chance of recurrence [5–7]. However, there have been contradictory reports showing either no or poor associations with outcome. Nevertheless, ...περισσότερα »

Cancers, Vol. 8, Pages 35: Mechanisms of Nuclear Export in Cancer and Resistance to Chemotherapy

Tumour suppressor proteins, such as p53, BRCA1, and ABC, play key roles in preventing the development of a malignant phenotype, but those that function as transcriptional regulators need to enter the nucleus in order to function. The export of proteins between the nucleus and cytoplasm is complex. It occurs through nuclear pores and exported proteins […]

Margin to tumor thickness ratio – A predictor of local recurrence and survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 14 δευτερόλεπτα
Margin to tumor thickness ratio – A predictor of local recurrence and survival in oral squamous cell carcinoma: Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Satisfactory oncologic resections require negative and adequate resection margins. A microscopic margin of 5mm has traditionally been accepted as adequate for various oral cavity sub-sites [1,2]. This definition, however, of adequate surgical resection remains controversial as some authors propose 2mm to be sufficient [3] while others advocate for more than 7mm [4]. Ch’ng et al. Toxicities and early outcomes in a phase 1 trial of photodynamic therapy for premalignant and early stage head and neck tumors: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses a photosensitizing agent and light to kill cells, involving delivery of a photosensitizer or photosensitizer precursor followed by illumination at a specific wavelength of light. The appeal of PDT in oncology has been that photosensitizers such as Photofrin are retained in tumor tissues for longer periods compared to normal tissue. The selectivity of photosensitizer for diseased tissue, as well as the ability to target the li...περισσότερα »

Staging significance of bone invasion in small-sized (4cm or less) oral squamous cell carcinoma as defined by the American Joint Committee on Cancer: According to the 2010 American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) [1], primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients with medullary bone invasion should be defined as T4a. Some studies show that OSCC bone invasion has a significant effect on survival in univariate analysis [2,3]. Furthermore, infiltrative bone invasion was shown to be associated with patient prognosis after correcting for the effects of other variables [4].

In East Germany, however, ASIRs for OPSCC did not increase after 2008 (through 2011) for males [4]. Tumour suppressor proteins, such as p53, BRCA1, and ABC, play key roles in preventing the development of a malignant phenotype, but those that function as transcriptional regulators need to enter the nucleus in order to function. The export of proteins between the nucleus and cytoplasm is complex. It occurs through nuclear pores and exported proteins need a nuclear export signal (NES) to bind to nuclear exportin proteins, including CRM1 (Chromosomal Region Maintenance protein 1), and the energy for this process is provided by the RanGTP/RanGDP gradient. Epidemiology of Low-Risk Human Papillomavirus: AbstractInfection with low-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs), mostly type 6 and 11, in the upper respiratory tract causes recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). Despite a relatively low incidence rate, RRP imposes significant morbidity upon affected patients and an enormous financial burden on the healthcare system. RRP can be further categorized into juvenile-onset RRP and adult-onset RRP, depending on the onset age. They may associate with different risk factors and incidence rates.
