Effects of relative and absolute frequency in the spectral weighting of loudness

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
Effects of relative and absolute frequency in the spectral weighting of loudnessa): The loudness of broadband sound is often modeled as a linear sum of specific loudness across frequency bands. In contrast, recent studies using molecular psychophysical methods suggest that low and high frequency components contribute more to the overall loudness than mid frequencies. In a series of experiments, the contribution of individual components to the overall loudness of a tone complex was assessed using the molecular psychophysical method as well as a loudness matching task. The stimuli we...περισσότερα »

An acoustic study of multiple lateral consonants

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
An acoustic study of multiple lateral consonants in three Central Australian languages: This study presents dental, alveolar, retroflex, and palatal lateral /̪ll ɭ ʎ/ data from three Central Australian languages: Arrernte, Pitjantjatjara, and Warlpiri. Formant results show that the laminal laterals (dental /̪l/ and palatal /ʎ/) have a relatively low F1, presumably due to a high jaw position for these sounds, as well as higher F4. In addition, the palatal /ʎ/ has very high F2. There is relatively little difference in F3 between the four lateral places of articulation. However, the r... περισσότερα »

Convergent signaling pathways controlled by LRP1 cytoplasmic and extracellular domains limit cellular cholesterol accumulation Metabolism

The Low Density Lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) is a ubiquitously expressed cell surface receptor that protects from intracellular cholesterol accumulation. However, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here we show that the extracellular α chain of LRP1 mediates TGFβ-induced enhancement of Wnt5a which limits intracellular cholesterol accumulation by inhibiting cholesterol biosynthesis and by promoting cholesterol […]

A Snapshot of the Plant Glycated Proteome: Structural, Functional and Mechanistic Aspects Glycobiology and Extracellular Matrices

Glycation is the reaction of carbonyl compounds (reducing sugars and α-dicarbonyls) with amino acids, lipids, and proteins, yielding early and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). The AGEs can be formed via degradation of early glycation intermediates (glycoxidation) and by interaction with the products of monosaccharide autoxidation (autoxidative glycosylation). Though formation of these potentially deleterious compounds is […]

Although qualitative and quantitative differences in channel permeability, selectivity, subcellular localization and trafficking responses have been observed for different members of the AQP family, the signature homotetrameric quaternary structure is conserved. Using a variety of biophysical techniques, we show that […]

An Analog-Sensitive Version of the Protein Kinase Slt2 Allows Identification of Novel Targets of the Yeast Cell Wall Integrity Pathway Signal Transduction

The yeast cell wall integrity (CWI) MAPK Slt2 mediates the transcriptional response to cell wall alterations through phosphorylation of transcription factors Rlm1 and SBF. However, the variety of cellular functions regulated by Slt2 suggests the existence of a significant number of still unknown substrates for this kinase. To identify novel Slt2 targets, we generated and […]

Signaling Network Controlling Androgenic Repression of c-Fos in Prostate Adenocarcinoma Cells Gene Regulation

The transcription factor c-Fos controls many important cellular processes including cell growth and apoptosis. c-Fos expression is rapidly elevated in the prostate upon castration-mediated androgen withdrawal through an undefined mechanism. Here we show that androgens (DHT, R1881) suppress c-Fos protein and mRNA expression induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) or EGF in human prostate cancer (PCa) cell […]

Identification of KSHV vIRF1 as a novel interaction partner of human deubiquitinase USP7 Enzymology

Viral Interferon Regulatory Factor 1 (vIRF1), a Kaposis sarcoma herpes virus protein, destabilizes p53 by inhibiting p53 acetylation and Hdm2 phosphorylation. This leads to increased ubiquitination and degradation of p53 by Hdm2, which cripples the cellular p53 mediated antiviral response. Ubiquitin Specific Protease 7 (USP7) deubiquitinates p53 and Hdm2 and regulates their stability. We identified […]

Ebola virus disease: any risk for oral and maxillo-facial surgery? An overview

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOroFacial Medicine by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract The 2014–2015 outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) in West Africa has been considered a major global health emergency by the WHO. Implications for health care providers including oral and maxillo-facial surgeons have been published by the WHO, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (USA), and other medical societies and public health organizations. While the risk of infection with the Ebola virus seems to be rather small in Europe, maxillo-facial and plastic surgeons often travel to Africa to treat patients with facial burns, cleft-lip and palate, and noma.
