Primary amelanotic rhabdoid melanoma of the forehead Pathologists in general and dermatopathologist in particular are very well aware that melanomas can virtually mimic any type of cancer due to its huge versatility to adopt many cytomorphological and architectural variants1. In 1992, rhabdoid variant of melanoma was first described by Bittesini et al.2, which is considered an extremely rare variant of malignant melanoma, better observed in metastatic cases rather than primary melanomas3. Histopathologically is characterized by the presence of large sheets or nests of polygonal tumor...περισσότερα »

The beneficial effect of Hangesha-shin-to (TJ-014) in gentamicin-induced hair cell loss in the rat cochlea: Ototoxic damage caused by aminoglycosides (AG) leads to the loss of cochlear hair cells (HCs). In mammals, mature cochlear HCs are unable to regenerate, and their loss results in permanent hearing deficits. Our objective was to protect the inner ear from damage after an AG challenge. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), one of the earliest events in the process of AG ototoxicity, is considered to play a key role in the initiation of HC death. Non-neuronal cells in ALS: Role of glial, immune cells and blood-CNS barriers

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΠαθολοΑνατομίαΠριν από 31 δευτερόλεπτα
ABSTRACT Neurological dysfunction and motor neuron degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is strongly associated with neuroinflammation reflected by activated microglia and astrocytes in the CNS. In ALS endogenous triggers in the CNS such as aggregated protein and misfolded proteins activate a pathogenic response by innate immune cells. However, there is also strong evidence for a neuroprotective immune response in ALS. Emerging evidence also reveals changes in the peripheral adaptive immune responses as well as alterations in the blood brain barrier that may aid traf...περισσότερα »

Partial 1q trisomy syndrome is a rare disorder. Because unbalanced chromosomal translocations often occur with 1q trisomy, it is difficult to determine whether patient symptoms are related to 1q trisomy or other chromosomal abnormalities. The present study evaluated genotype–phenotype correlations of 26 cases diagnosed with 1q partial trisomy syndrome. DNA microarray was used to investigate the duplication/triplication region of 16 cases. Although there was no overlapping region common to all 26 cases, the 1q41-qter region was frequently involved. One case diagnosed as a pure int...περισσότερα »

Gene-Based Association Analysis for Censored Traits Via Fixed Effect Functional Regressions

ABSTRACT Genetic studies of survival outcomes have been proposed and conducted recently, but statistical methods for identifying genetic variants that affect disease progression are rarely developed. Motivated by our ongoing real studies, here we develop Cox proportional hazard models using functional regression (FR) to perform gene-based association analysis of survival traits while adjusting for covariates. […]

The Role of MRI and CT in the Diagnosis of Atherosclerosis in an Aging Population

Abstract Atherosclerosis and its related complications represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Morbidity and mortality rates for cardiovascular disease actually increase with age, which is an issue considering the growing geriatric population. In recent years, non-invasive diagnostic imaging—mainly CT and MRI—has seen an increasingly important role in diagnosing atherosclerosis early, improving risk […]

Crystal Structure of Manganese Lipoxygenase of the Rice Blast Fungus Magnaporthe oryzae Enzymology

Lipoxygenases (LOX) are non-heme metal enzymes, which oxidize polyunsaturated fatty acids to hydroperoxides. All LOX belong to the same gene family, and they are widely distributed. LOX of animals, plants and prokaryotes contain Fe as the catalytic metal, whereas fungi express LOX with Fe or with Mn. Little is known about metal selection by LOX […]

We present […]

Chronic stress and oral cancer research: Disregarded aspects in animal model studies

Xie et al. illustrated the effects of chronic physical stress on an animal model. The authors demonstrated that stress-related mediators (catecholamine and glucocorticoid) can enhance the production of angiogenic cytokines VEGF and MMP-2 [1]. We would like to take this opportunity to discuss some of the issues associated with oral cancer research and stress in […]

Is p16-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma associated with favorable prognosis? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Squamous cell cancers of the head and neck as a group represent the sixth most common malignancy worldwide [1]. While the overall incidence of head and neck cancers (HNC) at various anatomic subsites such as the ventrolateral tongue and floor of mouth has decreased in conjunction with reduced smoking and drinking rates, oropharyngeal squamous cell […]

Generalization of Rare Variant Association Tests for Longitudinal Family Studies

ABSTRACT Given the functional relevance of many rare variants, their identification is frequently critical for dissecting disease etiology. Functional variants are likely to be aggregated in family studies enriched with affected members, and this aggregation increases the statistical power to detect rare variants associated with a trait of interest. Longitudinal family studies provide additional information […]

Sequence Kernel Association Test of Multiple Continuous Phenotypes

ABSTRACT Genetic studies often collect multiple correlated traits, which could be analyzed jointly to increase power by aggregating multiple weak effects and provide additional insights into the etiology of complex human diseases. Existing methods for multiple trait association tests have primarily focused on common variants. There is a surprising dearth of published methods for testing […]
