Impedance Changes and Fibrous Tissue Growth after Cochlear Implantation Are Correlated and Can Be Reduced Using a Dexamethasone Eluting Electrode
Impedance Changes and Fibrous Tissue Growth after
Cochlear Implantation Are Correlated and Can Be Reduced Using a Dexamethasone
Eluting Electrode: Background The efficiency of cochlear implants (CIs) is
affected by postoperative connective tissue growth around the electrode array.
This tissue formation is thought to be the cause behind post-operative increases
in impedance. Dexamethasone (DEX) eluting CIs may reduce fibrous tissue growth
around the electrode array subsequently moderating elevations in impedance of
the electrode contacts. Methods For this study, DEX was incorpora...περισσότερα »

Cross-Modal and Intra-Modal Characteristics of
Visual Function and Speech Perception Performance in Postlingually Deafened,
Cochlear Implant Users: Evidence of visual-auditory cross-modal plasticity in
deaf individuals has been widely reported. Superior visual abilities of deaf
individuals have been shown to result in enhanced reactivity to visual events
and/or enhanced peripheral spatial attention. The goal of this study was to
investigate the association between visual-auditory cross-modal plasticity and
speech perception in post-lingually deafened, adult cochlear implant (CI)

Stereotactic LINAC-Radiosurgery for Glomus Jugulare
Tumors: A Long-Term Follow-Up of 27 Patients: Background The optimal treatment
of glomus jugulare tumors (GJTs) remains controversial. Due to the critical
location, microsurgery still provides high treatment-related morbidity and a
decreased quality of life. Thus, we performed stereotactical radiosurgery (SRS)
for the treatment of GJTs and evaluated the long-term outcome. Methods Between
1991 and 2011, 32 patients with GJTs underwent SRS using a linear accelerator

Poisoning: Anshan Prefecture, Liaoning Province, China, 2011–2012: Background
Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can be fatal but is preventable. From October
2010 to February 2011, Anshan Prefecture reported 57 cases of non-occupational
CO poisoning in District A, with two deaths. We conducted an investigation to
identify risk factors and recommend preventive measures. Methods We defined a

Tumor-Associated Endothelial Cells Promote Tumor
Metastasis by Chaperoning Circulating Tumor Cells and Protecting Them from
Anoikis: Tumor metastasis is a highly inefficient biological process as millions
of tumor cells are released in circulation each day and only a few of them are
able to successfully form distal metastatic nodules. This could be due to the
fact that most of the epithelial origin cancer cells are anchorage-dependent and
undergo rapid anoikis in harsh circulating conditions. A number of studies have

Anti-HMG-CoA Reductase, Antioxidant, and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Amaranthus viridis Leaf Extract as a Potential Treatment for Hypercholesterolemia
Inflammation and oxidative stress are believed to

Immune Reactivity and Pseudoprogression or Tumor Flare in a Serially Biopsied Neuroendocrine Patient Treated with the Epigenetic Agent RRx-001

Nevertheless, despite these common characteristics, NETs differ widely in terms

small cell lung cancer, which they most closely resemble, tend to respond to
cisplatin and etoposide. In contrast, low-grade NETs, which as a rule

Postirradiation pseudosclerodermatous panniculitis with involvement of breast parenchyma: A dramatic example of a rare entity and a pitfall in diagnosis
Abstract Postirradiation pseudosclerodermatous
panniculitis is a rare complication of external beam radiotherapy. This
inflammatory process typically presents as an erythematous indurated plaque in a
previously irradiated region of skin. To date, 13 cases have been reported
worldwide. We present a case of a 70 year-old female who received breast
irradiation following conservation surgery for invasive breast carcinoma. In her
third year of follow-up she developed an enlarging mass, involving the subcutis
and underlying breast tissue, associated with mammographically-detected coarse

Histopathology of keratotic papules of the limbs in frontal fibrosing alopecia
Abstract Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a
scarring type of alopecia that presents clinically as progressive frontotemporal
hairline regression and eyebrow loss, mainly in postmenopausal women. An
additional common finding is keratotic papules on the face or (less commonly) on
the trunk and extremities. The histopathology of the facial keratotic papules
associated with FFA is the same as that of lichen planopilaris. There are very
few FFA cases with biopsies from extrafacial sites and no cases of
folliculocentric keratotic papules with biopsies from extrafacial sites. In the

Methotrexate-associated EBV-positive vasculitis in the skin: a report of two cases simulating rheumatoid vasculitis
Abstract Rheumatoid vasculitis (RV) is one of the

encountered two cases of ulcerative vasculitis in methotrexate (MTX)-prescribed

*in situ* hybridization on their skin biopsies revealed many EBV-positive

An unusual presentation of Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans with pleomorphic sarcomatous transformation: potential pitfall and diagnostic strategy
Abstract Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is
a low grade, superficial sarcoma characterized by a proliferation of
monomorphous, spindle cells arranged in a storiform pattern and infiltrating the
subcutaneous tissue. The tumor is typically CD34 positive, and shows the
characteristic COL1A1-PDGFB fusion gene, detectable either by FISH and PCR. We

Eye lens dosimetry in anesthesiology: a prospective study
Abstract The eye lens is one of the most sensitive
organs for radiation injury and exposure might lead to radiation induced
cataract. Eye lens dosimetry in anesthesiology has been published in few
clinical trials and an active debate about the causality of radiation induced
cataract is still ongoing. Recently, the International Commission on
Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommended a reduction in the annual dose limit
for occupational exposure for the lens of the eye from 150 to 20 mSv, averaged
over a period of 5 years, with the dose in a single year not exceeding 50 mSv.

metabolic-vascular risk factors or diseases associated with increased
cardiovascular morbidity, fatty liver disease and risk of cancer. The risk for
major complications such as cardiovascular diseases, NASH and some cancers
develops along a continuum of risk factors into clinical diseases. Therefore we
