Impedance Changes and Fibrous Tissue Growth after Cochlear Implantation Are Correlated and Can Be Reduced Using a Dexamethasone Eluting Electrode

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 5 δευτερόλεπτα
Impedance Changes and Fibrous Tissue Growth after Cochlear Implantation Are Correlated and Can Be Reduced Using a Dexamethasone Eluting Electrode: Background The efficiency of cochlear implants (CIs) is affected by postoperative connective tissue growth around the electrode array. This tissue formation is thought to be the cause behind post-operative increases in impedance. Dexamethasone (DEX) eluting CIs may reduce fibrous tissue growth around the electrode array subsequently moderating elevations in impedance of the electrode contacts. Methods For this study, DEX was incorpora...περισσότερα »

Tumor-Associated Endothelial Cells Promote Tumor Metastasis by Chaperoning Circulating Tumor Cells and Protecting Them from Anoikis: Tumor metastasis is a highly inefficient biological process as millions of tumor cells are released in circulation each day and only a few of them are able to successfully form distal metastatic nodules. This could be due to the fact that most of the epithelial origin cancer cells are anchorage-dependent and undergo rapid anoikis in harsh circulating conditions. A number of studies have shown that in addition to tumor cells, activated endothelial cells ...περισσότερα »

IL-10-Expressing Th2 Cells Contribute to the Elevated Antibody Production in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 53 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease associated with progressive disability, systemic complications, and early death. Multiple lines of evidence have placed adaptive immune responses in the center of RA pathogenesis. However, the functional roles of T helper cells are insufficiently described. Here, we examined the Th2 cell subsets and their functions in RA patients. A downregulation of IL-4+ cells in CD4+ T cells were observed in RA patients, indicating a downregulation of Th2 cells, and these results were confirmed by using and CXCR3 and CCR6 surface ...περισσότερα »

Methotrexate-associated EBV-positive vasculitis in the skin: a report of two cases simulating rheumatoid vasculitis

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΠαθολοΑνατομίαΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Rheumatoid vasculitis (RV) is one of the most serious extra-articular complications of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), generally treated with a high dose of immunosuppressive drugs. Recently, we encountered two cases of ulcerative vasculitis in methotrexate (MTX)-prescribed RA patients, which simulated RV; however, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded RNA *in situ* hybridization on their skin biopsies revealed many EBV-positive lymphocytes (over 50 cells/high-power field) within the vessel walls and perivascular stroma, which led us to the diagnosis of EBV-related vasculitis instea...περισσότερα »

Abstract Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low grade, superficial sarcoma characterized by a proliferation of monomorphous, spindle cells arranged in a storiform pattern and infiltrating the subcutaneous tissue. The tumor is typically CD34 positive, and shows the characteristic COL1A1-PDGFB fusion gene, detectable either by FISH and PCR. We describe a case of DFSP with a focus of peculiar pleomorphic sarcomatous transformation. The focus constituted the entire bioptic tissue that was initially excised, raising considerable diagnostic problems for pathologist. The use of F...περισσότερα »

Abstract Establishing a definitive diagnosis for any form of alopecia can be challenging. Adding to the diagnostic complexity is the fact that many patients have more than one form of alopecia contributing to their hair loss. We conducted a review of 1360 consecutive scalp biopsy specimens submitted for the evaluation of scalp hair loss over a 16-month period, demonstrating that 12.5% of cases had a combination of diagnoses (multifactorial alopecia) accounting for their hair loss. Insight into the molecular basis of Schistosoma haematobium -induced bladder cancer through urine proteomics

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Abstract Infection due to *Schistosoma haematobium* is carcinogenic. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying urogenital schistosomiasis (UGS)-induced carcinogenesis have not been well defined. Conceptually, early molecular detection of this phenomenon, through non-invasive procedures, seems feasible and is desirable. Previous analysis of urine collected during UGS suggests that estrogen metabolites, including depurinating adducts, may be useful for this purpose. Here, a new direction was pursued: the identification of molecular pathways and potential biomarkers i...περισσότερα »

High incidence of TERT mutation in brain tumor cell lines

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Abstract *TERT* promoter gene mutations are highly recurrent in malignant glioma. However, little information exists regarding their presence in experimental brain tumor models. To better characterize systems in which *TERT* mutation studies could be appropriately modeled experimentally, the *TERT* promoter was examined by conventional sequencing in primary brain tumor initiating cells (BTIC), two matched recurrent BTIC lines, a panel of established malignant glioma cell lines, and two meningioma cell lines. Telomerase gene expression was examined by quantitative PCR. We found that...περισσότερα »

Low serum vitamin D is associated with axial length and risk of myopia in young children

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and axial length (AL) and myopia in 6-year-old children. A total of 2666 children aged 6 years participating in the birth-cohort study Generation R underwent a stepwise eye examination. First, presenting visual acuity (VA) and AL were performed. Second, automated cycloplegic refraction was measured if LogMAR VA > 0.1. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was determined from blood using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Vitamin D related SNPs were determined with a SNP array; ...περισσότερα »

Trajectories of body mass index before the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease: a latent class trajectory analysis

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Abstract Patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are a heterogeneous group regarding their body mass index (BMI) levels at the time of diagnosis. To address the heterogeneity of CVD, we examined the trajectories of change in body mass index (BMI) and in other cardio-metabolic risk factors before CVD diagnosis. The study included 6126 participants from the prospective population-based Rotterdam Study, followed over 22 years with clinical examinations every 4 years. Latent class trajectory analysis and mixed-effect models were used to develop trajectories of BMI and other cardio-...περισσότερα »

Adjusting to a Diagnosis of Cancer: Processes for Building Patient Capacity for Decision-Making

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΟγκολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Abstract This short report contributes to the expanding body of qualitative research literature about the cognitive processes of newly diagnosed cancer patients as they adjust to a diagnosis of cancer. The study is based on secondary qualitative analysis of audio records collected as part of a larger NIH study (RO1D: An Interdisciplinary Perspective: A Social Science Examination of Oncofertility RL1 HD058296). Core categories illustrate the processes of "naming it," "dealing with dealing with it," and finding the "new norm" and were based on nine patient experiences. We observe tha...περισσότερα »

IJERPH, Vol. 13, Pages 306: Global Evidence on the Association between POS Advertising Bans and Youth Smoking Participation

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
Background: Point-of-sale (POS) tobacco advertising has been linked to youth smoking susceptibility and experimental smoking. However, there is limited evidence of the association between POS advertising bans and youth smoking participation. This study aims to examine how such bans are associated with current smoking, daily smoking, and regular smoking (≥1 cigarettes per day) participation among youth. Methods: one to two waves (primarily one wave) of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey were conducted in 130 countries between 2007 and 2011. These surveys were linked to the WHO "MPOWER...περισσότερα »

Energies, Vol. 9, Pages 180: A High-Gain Three-Port Power Converter with Fuel Cell, Battery Sources and Stacked Output for Hybrid Electric Vehicles and DC-Microgrids

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
This paper proposes a novel high-gain three-port power converter with fuel cell (FC), battery sources and stacked output for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) connected to a dc-microgrid. In the proposed power converter, the load power can be flexibly distributed between the input sources. Moreover, the charging or discharging of the battery storage device can be controlled effectively using the FC source. The proposed converter has several outputs in series to achieve a high-voltage output, which makes it suitable for interfacing with the HEV and dc-microgrid. On the basis of the ch...περισσότερα »

Molecules, Vol. 21, Pages 324: New Cerebroside and Nucleoside Derivatives from a Red Sea Strain of the Marine Cyanobacterium Moorea producens

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 2 ώρες
In the course of our ongoing efforts to identify marine-derived bioactive compounds, the marine cyanobacterium Moorea producens was investigated. The organic extract of the Red Sea cyanobacterium afforded one new cerebroside, mooreaside A (1), two new nucleoside derivatives, 3-acetyl-2′-deoxyuridine (2) and 3-phenylethyl-2′-deoxyuridine (3), along with the previously reported compounds thymidine (4) and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl heptacosanoate (5). The structures of the compounds were determined by different spectroscopic studies (UV, IR, 1D, 2D NMR, and HRESIMS), as well as comparison ...περισσότερα »
