Correct identification of symptomatic high-grade internal carotid artery stenosis from low-grade or total chronic occlusion is critical for patient selection for urgent carotid endarterectomy. Carotid pseudo-occlusion is a flow-related artifact on noninvasive imaging that can lead to an incorrect diagnosis of total internal carotid artery occlusion, thereby denying an eligible patient for appropriate surgical treatment. We present an 82-year-old man with a symptomatic critical internal carotid artery, which was detected on time-resolved 4-dimensional computed-tomography angiograph...περισσότερα »

We analyzed factors predictive for overall survival (OS) and treatment modality utilization. MethodsUsing the National Cancer Data Base, we identified 3552 patients with ATC. Factors associated with surgery, high-dose radiotherapy (RT; ≥59.4 Gy), and chemotherapy utilization were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. From this, an inverse...περισσότερα »

Detection of eustachian tube openings by tubomanometry in adult otitis media with effusion: AbstractOtitis media with effusion (OME) is a common disease and eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction is widely known to be related to the incidence of OME; however, objective evaluation tools for ET function are lacking. To evaluate ET openings by tubomanometry (TMM) in adult patients with otitis media with effusion (OME), the ET patency of 123 ears, including 63 ears of OME patients and 60 control ears, were tested using TMM and tympanometry. ET patency was evaluated by the R value and ET scor...περισσότερα »

The proportion of the population over 65 continues to climb and may eclipse 20 % in the next decade. In order to effectively diagnosis and treat these patients, a proper history and physical exam remain essential; pain assessment scales such as the Verbal Descriptor Scales (VDS), the Numerical Rating Scales (NRS), and the Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) often but not always prove beneficial. Genetic Characterization of a Novel Mutant of Peste Des Petits Ruminants Virus Isolated from Capra ibex in China during 2015

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΒιοΜηχανικήΠριν από 1 ώρα
Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is the causative agent of peste des petits ruminants (PPR). The spread of PPR often causes severe economic losses. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the surveillance of PPR emergence, spread, and geographic distribution. Here we describe a novel mutant of PPRV China/XJBZ/2015 that was isolated from Capra ibex in Xinjiang province in China 2015. The sequence analysis and phylogenetic assessment indicate that China/XJBZ/2015 belongs to lineage IV, being closely related to China/XJYL/2013 strain. Interestingly, the V protein sequen...περισσότερα »

Measure prediction capability of data for collaborative filtering

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΒιοΜηχανικήΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Collaborative filtering (CF) approaches have been widely been employed in e-commerce to help users find items they like. Whereas most of existing work focuses on improving algorithmic performance, it is important to know whether the recommendation for users and items can be trustworthy. In this paper, we propose a metric, "relatedness," to measure the potential that a user's preference on an item can be accurately predicted. The relatedness of a user–item pair is determined by a community which consists of users and items most related to the pair. The relatedness is comput...περισσότερα »
