STAT5 is a key regulator in NK cells and acts as molecular switch from tumor surveillance to tumor promotion [Research Articles]
STAT5 is a key regulator in NK cells and acts as molecular switch from tumor surveillance to tumor promotion [Research Articles]: Natural Killer (NK) cells are tightly regulated by the JAK-STAT signaling pathway and cannot survive in the absence of STAT5. We now report that STAT5-deficient NK cells can be rescued by overexpression of Bcl-2. Our experiments define STAT5 as a master regulator of NK-cell proliferation and lytic functions. While NK cells are generally responsible for killing tumor cells, the rescued STAT5-deficient NK cells promote tumor formation by producing enhanced...περισσότερα »

DSPP Is Essential for Normal Development of the Dental-Craniofacial Complex
DSPP Is Essential for Normal Development of the Dental-Craniofacial Complex: The craniofacial skeleton is derived from both neural crest cells and mesodermal cells; however, the majority of the bone, cartilage, and connective tissue is derived from the neural crest. Dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) is a precursor protein that is expressed by the connective tissues of the craniofacial skeleton, namely, bone and dentin with high expression levels in the dentin matrix. Gene ablation studies have shown severe dental defects in *DSPP*-null mutant mice. Therefore, to elucidate the role... περισσότερα »
RhoA-JNK Regulates the E-Cadherin Junctions of Human Gingival Epithelial Cells
RhoA-JNK Regulates the E-Cadherin Junctions of Human Gingival Epithelial Cells: The junctional epithelium (JE) is unique with regard to its wide intercellular spaces and sparsely developed intercellular junctions. Thus, knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that regulate the formation of the intercellular junctions of the junctional epithelium may be essential to understand the pathophysiology of the JE. HOK-16B cells, a normal human gingival epithelial cell line, were used to identify the molecules involved in the regulation of the formation of intercellular E-cadherin junctions ... περισσότερα »
Topography Influences Adherent Cell Regulation of Osteoclastogenesis
Topography Influences Adherent Cell Regulation of Osteoclastogenesis: The importance of osteoclast-mediated bone resorption in the process of osseointegration has not been widely considered. In this study, cell culture was used to investigate the hypothesis that the function of implant-adherent bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) in osteoclastogenesis is influenced by surface topography. BMSCs isolated from femur and tibia of Sprague-Dawley rats were seeded onto 3 types of titanium surfaces (smooth, micro, and nano) and a control surface (tissue culture plastic) with or without osteo...περισσότερα »
Apoptosis in Early Salivary Gland Duct Morphogenesis and Lumen Formation
Apoptosis in Early Salivary Gland Duct Morphogenesis and Lumen Formation: Salivary glands are essential for the maintenance of oral health by providing lubrication and antimicrobial protection to the mucosal and tooth surfaces. Saliva is modified and delivered to the oral cavity by a complex multifunctional ductal system. During development, these ducts form as solid tubes, which undergo cavitation to create lumens. Apoptosis has been suggested to play a role in this cavitation process along with changes in cell polarity. Here, we show that apoptosis occurs from the very earliest s... περισσότερα »
Alginate (Gaviscon Advance) vs. placebo as add-on therapy in reflux patients with inadequate response to a once daily proton pump inhibitor
Randomised clinical trial: alginate (Gaviscon Advance) vs. placebo as add-on therapy in reflux patients with inadequate response to a once daily proton pump inhibitor: Summary Background Many reflux patients remain symptomatic on a standard dose of proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Alginates decrease the number of reflux events by forming a raft on top of the stomach content and thus offer a supplemental mechanism of action to acid suppression. Aim To assess the efficacy of an alginate (Gaviscon Advance, Reckitt Benckiser, Slough, UK) on reflux symptoms in patients with persistent sympto...περισσότερα »

White Noise For Tinnitus
White Noise For Tinnitus: ------------------------------ If you are someone who has suffered with tinnitus, you know all too well how irritating it can be. Most people describe tinnitus as a ringing sound heard in the ears, but other sounds such as a roaring or rushing sound that is like what you may hear at the ocean, clicking, hissing, or even unclear voices can be heard. These sounds are heard when there are no external factors around to produce them. Tinnitus can be difficult to diagnose. Many people suffer for years before seeking help, and even then, diagnosis can be diffic... περισσότερα »

This article aims to identify best practice by reviewing the theory and practice of texture modification, focussing on recent advances. Recent findings: Instrumental assessment of texture modification in vivo is challenging, and studies including rheology and perception have in... περισσότερα »
Vocal tract characteristics in Parkinson's disease.
Purpose of review: Voice tremor is strongly linked to the Parkinson's disease speech-voice symptom complex. Little is known about the underlying anatomic source(s) of voice tremor when it occurs. We review recent literature addressing this issue. Additionally we report findings from a study we conducted employing rating of vocal tract structures viewed using nasolaryngoscopy during vocal and nonspeech tasks. Recent findings: In Parkinson's disease, using laryngeal electromyography, tremor has not been identified in muscles in the vocal folds even when perceived auditorily. Prelimina...περισσότερα »
AGE-induced Keratinocyte MMP-9 Expression is Linked to TET2-mediated CpG Demethylation
Abstract Studies have documented that unusually high expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) suppresses wound healing during the late stages of diabetic foot ulcers. Recently, we reported that the presence of advanced glycation end products-bovine serum albumin (AGE-BSA) results in a higher expression of MMP-9 in skin primary keratinocytes. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the molecular machinery that is responsible for the inappropriately high AGEBSA-induced expression of MMP-9. We demonstrate that site-specific DNA demethylation plays an important role in M...περισσότερα »

Predictive factors of depressive symptoms of elderly patients with cancer receiving first-line chemotherapy
Abstract Background Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder in geriatrics and oncology. For elderly cancer patients, it has a significant impact on quality of life, morbidity, and mortality. Nevertheless, depression is under-diagnosed and under-treated. Cancer management is key in improving the quality of care in this population. We aim to identify sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment-related factors of depression in elderly patients during chemotherapy, thus allowing early detection of patients in need of specific treatment. Further, we investigate whether chemot... περισσότερα »

The gate of the HEMT device is functionalized using a Pt catalyst for gas detection. We found that the performance of the sensors is enhanced at a temperature of 600 °C, and the measured sensitivity to 900 ppm-NO, 900 ppm-NO 2 and 15 ppm-NH 3 is 24%, 38.5% and 33%, respectively, at 600 °C. We also report dynamic response times as fast as 1 s for these three gases. Togeth...περισσότερα »
Materials, Vol. 9, Pages 122: Effect of Friction Stir Process Parameters on the Mechanical and Thermal Behavior of 5754-H111 Aluminum Plates
A study of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process was carried out in order to evaluate the influence of process parameters on the mechanical properties of aluminum plates (AA5754-H111). The process was monitored during each test by means of infrared cameras in order to correlate temperature information with eventual changes of the mechanical properties of joints. In particular, two process parameters were considered for tests: the welding tool rotation speed and the welding tool traverse speed. The quality of joints was evaluated by means of destructive and non-destructive tests.... περισσότερα »

Micromachines, Vol. 7, Pages 34: Surface Free Energy Determination of APEX Photosensitive Glass
Surface free energy (SFE) plays an important role in microfluidic device operation. Photosensitive glasses such as APEX offer numerous advantages over traditional glasses for microfluidics, yet the SFE for APEX has not been previously reported. We calculate SFE with the Owens/Wendt geometric method by using contact angles measured with the Sessile drop technique. While the total SFE for APEX is found to be similar to traditional microstructurable glasses, the polar component is lower, which is likely attributable to composition. The SFE was modified at each stage of device fabrica... περισσότερα »
Nutrients, Vol. 8, Pages 108: Metabolic Effects of a 24-Week Energy-Restricted Intervention Combined with Low or High Dairy Intake in Overweight Women: An NMR-Based Metabolomics Investigation
We investigated the effect of a 24-week energy-restricted intervention with low or high dairy intake (LD or HD) on the metabolic profiles of urine, blood and feces in overweight/obese women by NMR spectroscopy combined with ANOVA-simultaneous component analysis (ASCA). A significant effect of dairy intake was found on the urine metabolome. HD intake increased urinary citrate, creatinine and urea excretion, and decreased urinary excretion of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and hippurate relative to the LD intake, suggesting that HD intake was associated with alterations in protein ca...περισσότερα »
