Applied Sciences, Vol. 6, Pages 104: Detecting the Presence of High Water-to-Cement Ratio in Concrete Surfaces Using Highly Nonlinear Solitary Waves

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 1 λεπτό
We describe a nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method based on the propagation of highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) to determine the excess of water on the surface of existing concrete structures. HNSWs are induced in a one-dimensional granular chain placed in contact with the concrete to be tested. The chain is part of a built-in transducer designed and assembled to exploit the dynamic interaction between the particles and the concrete. The hypothesis is that the interaction depends on the stiffness of the concrete and influences the time-of-flight of the solitary pulse refl...περισσότερα »

Sensors, Vol. 16, Pages 518: Energy Calibration of a CdTe Photon Counting Spectral Detector with Consideration of its Non-Convergent Behavior

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝοσολογίαΠριν από 1 λεπτό
Fast and accurate energy calibration of photon counting spectral detectors (PCSDs) is essential for their biomedical applications to identify and characterize bio-components or contrast agents in tissues. Using the x-ray tube voltage as a reference for energy calibration is known to be an efficient method, but there has been no consideration in the energy calibration of non-convergent behavior of PCSDs. We observed that a single pixel mode (SPM) CdTe PCSD based on Medipix-2 shows some non-convergent behaviors in turning off the detector elements when a high enough threshold is app...περισσότερα »

Since important national and international funders of research projects require statements on the long-term accessibility of research results, many new solutions appeared to fulfil these demands. The solutions are implemented on various scopes, starting from specific solutions for one research group up to solutions with a national focus (i.e., the RADAR project). While portals for globally standardized research data (e.g., climate data) are available, there is currently no provision for the large amount of data resulting from specialized research in individual research foci, the s... περισσότερα »

Darwin’s Tubercle: Review of a Unique Congenital Anomaly: Abstract Background“Darwin’s tubercle” is a term used to describe an atavistic swelling of the posterior helix that is present in some individuals. Little is known about its prevalence, characteristics, and function. With growing interest in the individuality of external ear patterns and its possible applications to personal identification, more knowledge about this tubercle is warranted. PurposeWe review the history, clinical presentation, and modern-day influences of Darwin’s tubercle. MethodA comprehensive review ... περισσότερα »

Crescendo response to rituximab in oral pemphigus vulgaris

a case with 7-year follow-up: Summary Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune blistering disease affecting the skin and mucous membranes. Rituximab, a CD20 chimeric monoclonal antibody, has efficacy in PV management. We report a case of severe oral PV that showed a progressive response to repeated courses of rituximab, culminating in a rapid response within 4 weeks following severe relapse 4 years after initial therapy. It demonstrates the progressively shorter time to achieve partial or complete remission following rituximab infusions, combined with minimal adjuvant therapy over ... περισσότερα »

Two further case reports: Background Migraine-tic syndrome was first reported in 2004 in a 44-year-old woman who had concomitant symptoms of both typical trigeminal neuralgia and migraine. We report here two further cases of migraine-tic syndrome and speculate on the relevance of this condition to the pathophysiology of headache. Case reports A 43-year-old woman presented with typical trigeminal neuralgia symptoms that preceded the onset of migraine headache; both headache types responded to treatment with sumatriptan. Genome-wide mitochondrial DNA sequence variations and lower expression of OXPHOS genes predict mitochondrial dysfunction in oral cancer tissue

Genome-wide mitochondrial DNA sequence variations and lower expression of OXPHOS genes predict mitochondrial dysfunction in oral cancer tissue: AbstractSeveral studies reported that mtDNA mutations may play important roles in carcinogenesis although the mechanism is not clear yet. Most of the studies compared mtDNA sequences in a tumor with those in normal tissues from different individuals ignoring inter-individual variations. In this study, 271 SNPs, 7 novel SNPs (or SNVs), and 15 somatic mutations were detected in mtDNA of 8 oral cancer tissues with respect to reference (rCRS) a...περισσότερα »

In recent years, several molecular techniques have been studied in melanoma, with the goal to improve upon the diagnostic and prognostic abilities of currently available clinical and histopathologic parameters. Reliable tests performed early in the diagnosis and management of melanoma could lead to decreased morbidity and mortality by selecting appropriate patients for more-aggressive therapy and sparing those for whom it is not indicated. Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy for metastatic paragangliomas

Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy for metastatic paragangliomas: AbstractThere is little evidence to direct the management of malignant paragangliomas (mPGL) beyond initial surgical treatment. Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), using somatostatin analogues, is effective in other neuroendocrine tumours, but data on its efficacy in treating mPGL are scarce. We report safety and efficacy outcomes from a case series of five patients with advanced mPGLs treated with 177Lu-DOTATATE PRRT. Evaluation of whole blood zinc and copper levels in children with autism spectrum disorder: AbstractZinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) are important trace elements for cognitive development and normal neurological functioning. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurological disorder, which has previously been associated with the levels of some trace elements in the blood. However, clinical data regarding the potential implication of Zn and Cu in patients with ASD are still insufficient. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the whole blood levels of Zn and Cu in... περισσότερα »

Lipofilling may induce nerve regeneration after previous traumatic injury

a clinical case with remarkable outcome: AbstractDespite the fast amount of techniques, which promote nerve regeneration, the outcomes of high ulnar nerve injuries are still poor. This case report illuminates the usability of lipofilling in peripheral nerve regeneration. In the case described, we encountered a successful regeneration with return of sensibility and motor function. We believe that the rationale for this technique is the presence of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). We speculate that this improvement depends on tissue regeneration induced by these ADSCs. Unfortunately, for lunar imagery, the altitude data at the ground control points (GCPs) for space resection are error-prone. Thus, existing models fail to produce reliable EOPs. Background: Electrical activity regulates the expression of skeletal muscle genes by a process known as «excitation-transcription» (E-T) coupling. Role of sclerostin in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder

Sclerostin is a 190-amino-acid glycoprotein that is mainly secreted by osteocytes, and it decreases bone formation by inhibiting the terminal differentiation of osteoblasts and promoting their apoptosis. Sclerostin blocks the Wnt signaling pathway in osteoblasts by binding to low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5/6 (LRP-5/6) receptors. We reviewed the literature detailing the role of sclerostin in […]
