[image: cover.gif?v=1&s=18911bcadec2567e9064b19b] Objectives/Hypothesis Laryngeal chondrosarcomas are rare entities that arise from the cartilaginous structures of the larynx, including the cricoid, thyroid cartilage, epiglottis, and arytenoid cartilages. These tumors represent a minority of malignancies involving the larynx and can be mistaken for benign pathologies. The treatment has historically been surgical excision, often by total laryngectomy. This review investigates treatment modalities and patient outcomes. Study Design Systematic review using PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE... περισσότερα »

In vitro evaluation of antifungal susceptibility and keratinase, elastase, lipase and DNase activities of different dermatophyte species isolated from clinical specimens in Iran

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 53 δευτερόλεπτα
Summary The aims of this study were to evaluate the enzymatic activity of various dermatophyte species and their antifungal susceptibility profiles. A total of 60 dermatophyte isolates, including *Trichophyton mentagrophytes*, *Trichophyton rubrum*, *Microsporum canis* and *Microsporum gypseum*, were examined. Fungal isolates were analysed for the production of keratinase, lipase, elastase and deoxyribonuclease (DNase). A broth microdilution method was performed on the basis of M38-A2 Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. *T. mentagrophytes*, *M. canis* and... περισσότερα »

Fusarium sacchari, a cause of mycotic keratitis among sugarcane farmers – a series of four cases from North India

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 53 δευτερόλεπτα
Summary The two most common filamentous fungi causing mycotic keratitis are *Aspergillus* and *Fusarium* spp. Around 70 *Fusarium* spp. are involved in causing human infections. In this study, four cases of keratitis in sugarcane farmers in India are being reported, caused by the sugar cane pathogen *Fusarium sacchari*, a species of the *Fusarium fujikuroi* species complex. Fusarial keratitis was established by potassium hydroxide/Calcofluor white wet mounts and fungal culture of corneal scrapings on conventional media. Final identification was done by genetic sequencing at CBS-KN... περισσότερα »

Epizootic and epidemic dermatophytose outbreaks caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes from rabbits in Portugal, 2015

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 53 δευτερόλεπτα
Summary We report an outbreak of dermatophytoses in rabbits, which was the origin of a dermatophytose epidemic in an agricultural school in central Portugal, affecting 15 people. Both the phenotypic characteristics and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence of the dermatophytes isolated from the rabbits and patients were identical, suggesting that a single strain was responsible for both the epizootic and epidemic dermatophytoses and confirming that these two outbreaks were linked. The ITS sequences were also 100% identical to the ITS sequence of five strains isolated from rab... περισσότερα »

Identification and typing of the emerging pathogen Candida auris by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry

Summary *Candida auris* is an emerging antifungal resistant yeast species causing nosocomial and invasive infections, emphasising the need of improved diagnostics and epidemiological typing methods. We show that MALDI-TOF VITEK-MS followed by amplified length polymorphisms allows for accurate species identification and subsequent epidemiological characterisation of strains encountered during potential outbreaks. from #ORL-Sfakianakis via xlomafota13 on Inoreader http://ift.tt/1ZJO5Ua via IFTTT

Loss of p53 expression is accompanied by upregulation of beta-catenin in meningiomas: a concomitant reciprocal expression

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 53 δευτερόλεπτα
Summary Crosstalk between Wnt and p53 signalling pathways in cancer has long been suggested. Therefore in this study we have investigated the involvement of these pathways in meningiomas by analysing their main effector molecules, beta-catenin and p53. Cellular expression of p53 and beta-catenin proteins and genetic changes in TP53 were analysed by immunohistochemistry, PCR/RFLP and direct sequencing of TP53 exon 4. All the findings were analysed statistically. Our analysis showed that 47.5% of the 59 meningiomas demonstrated loss of expression of p53 protein. Moderate and strong p... περισσότερα »

Functional roles of CSPG4/NG2 in chondrosarcoma

Αλέξανδρος ΣφακιανάκηςστοMedicine by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 53 δευτερόλεπτα
Summary CSPG4/NG2 is a multifunctional transmembrane protein with limited distribution in adult tissues including articular cartilage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible roles of CSPG4/NG2 in chondrosarcomas and to establish whether this molecule may have potential for targeted therapy. Stable knock-down of CSPG4/NG2 in the JJ012 chondrosarcoma cell line by shRNA resulted in decreased cell proliferation and migration as well as a decrease in gene expression of the MMP (matrix metalloproteinase) 3 protease and ADAMTS4 (aggrecanase). Chondrosarcoma cells in wh... περισσότερα »

[image: cover.gif?v=1&s=181b27a31d0ca2da1556ca62] Abstract Vancomycin is a first-line treatment for beta-lactam resistant gram-positive bacterial infections. Understanding the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) characteristics of vancomycin in an adolescent population is of clinical importance in this often overlooked pediatric population. This retrospective study investigated vancomycin PK-PD in an adolescent cohort (12-18 years of age) of 463 patients (57% male, 81% white) admitted to the Intermountain Healthcare System between January 2006 and December 2013. MT3-MMP down-regulation promotes tumorigenesis and correlates to poor prognosis in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract The membrane-type matrix metalloproteinases (MT-MMPs) play an important role in degrading the extracellular matrix (ECM) and facilitating protease-dependent tumor progression and invasion. Here, we report that unlike MT1-MMP, MT3-MMP was down-regulated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) as detected by real-time PCR (qPCR), Western blot analysis, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). Down-regulation of MT3-MMP was observed […]

Abstract We found microRNA-133b (miR-133b) was downregulated in urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB) tissues, and it could inhibit the proliferation and induce apoptosis in UCB cells. Consequently, we intend to explore the clinical significance of miR-133b in UCB patients. Expression of miR-133b in 146 UCB specimens and matched adjacent non-neoplastic bladder tissues were measured […]

Higher preoperative serum levels of PD-L1 and B7-H4 are associated with invasive and metastatic potential and predic table for poor response to VEGF-targeted therapy and unfavorable prognosis of renal cell carcinoma

Abstract Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is an immunogenic and proangiogenic cancer. Although antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapies achieve impressive responses in some patients, many tumors eventually develop resistance to such therapy. The B7 family molecules such as CTLA-4, PD-1, and PD-L1 are pivotal players in immune checkpoints that positively or negatively regulate various immune […]
