Keratin-based wound products on refractory wounds
The use of keratin-based wound products on refractory wounds: Abstract Keratin proteins have been shown to play a key role in wound healing. Controlled keratin gene (KRT) expression promotes cell growth, migration and differentiation, and as an example of the importance of keratin proteins, absence of KRT17 has been shown to delay wound closure. In addition, downregulation of KRT6 and KRT16 in non-healing chronic venous ulcers suggests that deregulation of keratin expression contributes to non-healing phenotype. Although most studies on the effects of CLA on obesity have focused on the reduction of body fat, a number of studies have demonstrated that CLA also increases lean body mass and enhances physical performances. It has been suggested that these effects may be due in part to physiological changes in the skeletal muscle, such as changes in the muscle fiber type transformation, alteration of the intracellular signaling pathways in muscle metabolism, ...περισσότερα »

(Intrinsically disordered) splice variants in the proteome: implications for novel drug discovery
Abstract In higher eukaryotes, proteomes are typically larger than corresponding genomes mostly due to alternative spicing (AS) which is affecting more than 86 % of human genes. Tissue specificity of many proteins is often determined by the AS of pre-mRNAs that generates multiple proteins from a single gene. Aberrations in AS are found in numerous human diseases. This article shows that AS expanded the classic "one-gene–one-protein" paradigm to the "one-gene–many-proteins" concept. AS is intimately associated with protein intrinsic disorder. There is a tight connection between the ...περισσότερα »

Materials and Methods Three potentially functional SNPs of *FOXE1* (rs3758250 and rs907577 in the 5′upstream, and rs7043516 in the 3′-UTR) were selected and their associations with non-syndromic orofacial clefts susceptibility were investigated in a case-control study from a Chinese population (602 cases and 605 controls). Genotyping was p... περισσότερα »
Lactate as a predictive marker for tumor recurrence in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) post radiation: a prospective study over 15 years
Abstract Objectives Lactate as a key regulator of the glycolytic phenotype has been recently described in fueling tumor growth and metastatic spread in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, in context of tumor recurrence following adjuvant radiation, the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. We therefore investigate the role of lactate towards radioresistance in HNSCC in this prospective study for the first time in vivo*.* Materials and methods Herein, we analyzed biopsies of primary squamous cell carcinoma after surgery and adjuvant irradiation in 17 patients....περισσότερα »
Salivary and serum leptin levels in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa
Abstract Objectives Leptin levels are associated with appetite and energy expenditure in healthy individuals. The present study aims to evaluate serum and salivary leptin concentrations in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa. Materials and methods Enrolled participants in this study included 41 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the buccal mucosa and 40 healthy control patients. Serum leptin levels were measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method in all subjects and reported in units of nanograms per millilitre. Salivary leptin level... περισσότερα »
One-year evaluation of inactive occlusal enamel lesions in children and adolescents
Abstract Objectives The aims of this study were to compare caries incidence and progression on sound occlusal surfaces and on surfaces presenting inactive enamel lesions in children and adolescents over 1 year and to estimate the risk of caries incidence and progression on these surfaces. Methods This prospective cohort study followed 200 7-15-year-old caries-inactive schoolchildren over 1 year. Stage of eruption, occlusal plaque, and occlusal caries were recorded on permanent molars. Statistical analysis was performed using generalized estimating equations with a logistic link f...περισσότερα »
Caries removal in deciduous teeth using an Er:YAG laser: a randomized split-mouth clinical trial
Abstract Objectives The aim of the present clinical randomized split-mouth study was to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of an Er:YAG laser for caries removal in primary molars, microbiological dentin analysis, and clinical restorations after 1 year in 29 children. Materials and methods The children's teeth were randomized into two groups: (I) an Er:YAG laser group and (II) a bur preparation group. The efficiency of the treatments (the time necessary for the removal of carious tissue) was evaluated based on the time spent on caries removal in the deciduous molars. The ef... περισσότερα »
The effect of final irrigation on the penetrability of an epoxy resin-based sealer into dentinal tubules: a confocal microscopy study
Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to compare the effect of QMix, BioPure MTAD, 17 % EDTA, and saline on the penetrability of a resin-based sealer into dentinal tubules using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and to describe the cleaning of root canal walls by SEM. Methods Eighty distobuccal roots from upper molars were selected and randomly divided into four groups (*n* = 20) before root canal preparation according to the solution used in the final rinse protocol (FRP): QG (QMix), MG (BioPure MTAD), EG (17 % EDTA), and CG (control group: saline). Ten roots ...περισσότερα »

Abstract Background Prevention behaviors help persons living with HIV (PLWH) to avoid transmitting HIV, and psychological variables have been found to predict HIV prevention behaviors. These variables have typically been measured using retrospective questionnaires about average psychological states over a period of time, which are likely to be biased by selective recall and interpretation. Measuring […]
Genetic diversity of lactase persistence in East African populations

Abstract Background The expression of lactase which digests lactose from milk in humans is generally lost after weaning, but selected mutations influencing the promoter of the lactase gene have spread into the human populations. This is considered a classical example of gene-culture co-evolution, and several studies suggested that the lactase gene has been under strong […]
