Competence for genetic transformation in Streptococcus pneumoniae

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοHead and Neck DiseasesΠριν από 10 δευτερόλεπτα
mutations in {sigma}A bypass the ComW requirement for late gene expression. [PublishAheadOfPrint]: *Streptococcus pneumoniae* is able to integrate exogenous DNA into its genome by natural genetic transformation. Transient accumulation of high levels of the only *S. pneumoniae* alternative factor is insufficient for development of fully competence without expression of a second competence-specific protein, ComW. The *comW* mutant is 104-fold deficient in the yield of recombinants, 10-fold deficient in the amount of X activity, and 10-fold deficient in the amount of X protein. The ... περισσότερα »

Noninvasive methods of detecting increased intracranial pressure

Noninvasive methods of detecting increased intracranial pressure: Abstract The detection of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is of paramount importance in the diagnosis and management of a number of neurologic pathologies. The current gold standard is the use of intraventricular or intraparenchymal catheters; however, this is invasive, expensive, and requires anesthesia. On the other hand, diagnosing […]

Use of Susceptibility-Weighted Imaging (SWI) in the Detection of Brain Hemorrhagic Metastases from Breast Cancer and Melanoma.: Purpose: Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) has significantly increased our sensitivity in detecting hemorrhagic brain lesions. We sought to explore the prevalence of intratumoral hemorrhage as detected by SWI in brain metastases from melanoma and breast cancer. Methods: Lesions with a size of 0.1 cm3 were categorized as micrometastases, whereas larger lesions were categorized as macrometastases. Antibacterial Efficacy of Eravacycline In Vivo against Gram-positive and Gram-negative Organisms [PublishAheadOfPrint]: Members of the tetracycline class are frequently classified as bacteriostatic. However, recent findings have demonstrated an improved, antibacterial killing profile; often achieving ≥ 3-log10 bacterial count reduction, when given for periods longer than 24 hours. Throughout his career, Michel Foucault sustained a trenchant critique of Jean-Paul Sartre, whom he accused of arguing that the subject "dispenses (all) significations". In contrast to existentialism's interests in subjective consciousness, Foucault pursues an archaeological method which he later develops into a genealogical approach to discourse that emphasizes the institutional practices and forms of knowledge/power that undergird historical epistemes. Taking contemporary networked Capitalism, the discourse of "workplace spirituality", and the life history of one management refor... περισσότερα »

Smoking tobacco is the main risk factor for head and neck cancer, is proportional to the number of pack years (number of packs smoked/day x number of years of smoking), and is reduced when the patient stops smoking. However, clinical studies have not uniformly reproduced the relation between survival and tobacco, possibly because they ignore the health benefit that reformed smokers obtain during the period between ... περισσότερα »

The G/T polymorphism of the COL1A1 gene exhibits a clinically significant influence on bone remodelling, leading to a predisposition to degenerative diseases. The enhancement of bone turnover and further loss of bone mass are thought to be the primary pathological changes in the early degenerative course of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA), with the appearance of low-density lesions. Thus, it was hypothesized that this polymorphism may also affect this type of bone lesion in TMJ OA. http://ift.tt/2990a4S

Early matrix metalloproteinase-9 concentration in the first 48 h after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage predicts delayed cerebral ischaemia: An observational study.

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοAnaesthesiologyΠριν από 38 δευτερόλεπτα
BACKGROUND: Delayed cerebral ischaemia from vasospasm is an important cause of complications and death after aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. There is currently no established biomarker for identifying patients at high risk of delayed cerebral ischaemia. OBJECTIVE: Considering the important role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of delayed cerebral ischaemia, we investigated whether matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) may be an efficient biomarker for predicting elayed cerebral ischaemia after subarachnoid haemorrhage. DESIGN: Single-centre prospective observational study in a ... περισσότερα »

The Escherichia coli P and type 1 pilus assembly chaperones PapD and FimC are monomeric in solution

[PublishAheadOfPrint]: The chaperone/usher pathway is used by Gram-negative bacteria to assemble adhesive surface structures known as pili or fimbriae. Uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli use this pathway to assemble P and type 1 pili, which facilitate colonization of the kidney and bladder, respectively. Pilus assembly requires a periplasmic chaperone and outer membrane protein termed the […]

Purpose: Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) has significantly increased our sensitivity in detecting hemorrhagic brain lesions. Susceptibility-weighted imaging findings on locations corresponding to enhancing lesions were categorized as either positive or negative based on presence/absence of signal dropout. Recurrent symptomatic sternoclavicular (SC) joint instability is rare and most commonly occurs following high-energy trauma or in patients with generalized ligamentous laxity. We report an unusual case of an atraumatic posterior subluxation of the SC joint, leading to a feeling of choking. The posterior subluxation, which occurred during shoulder motion and in supine body position, was demonstrated using a dynamic wide-volume 4-dimensional computed tomography scan. Based on continuing patient symptoms and imaging findings, surgical stabilization of the SC joint was undertaken. Copyri... περισσότερα »

Chromosomal aberrations and multiple genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have established a major hematopoietic quantitative trait locus in chromosome 6q23.3. The locus comprises an active enhancer region, in which some of the associated SNPs alter transcription factor binding. We now identify microRNA-3662 as a new functional driver contributing to the associated phenotypes. The GWAS SNPs are strongly associated with higher miR-3662 expression. Genome editing of rs66650371, a three base pair deletion, suggests a functional link between the SNP genotype and the abundance of mi... περισσότερα »

Adolescents with irritable bowel syndrome report increased eating-associated symptoms, changes in dietary composition, and altered eating behaviors: a pilot comparison study to healthy adolescents

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοHead and Neck DiseasesΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract Background About half of adult irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients report symptoms with eating and disordered eating habits. However, little is known about eating in adolescent IBS patients, a common age at which eating disorders develop. The aim of the study was to investigate if adolescents with IBS are more likely than healthy controls (HCs) to experience eating-associated symptoms (EAS), report disordered eating patterns, and show differences in diet composition. Methods A total of 99 adolescents between 15 and 21 years-of-age participated (*n* = 48 IBS; *n* = 5... περισσότερα »

Gastrointestinal dysfunction and enteric neurotoxicity following treatment with anticancer chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil

Abstract Background The use of the anticancer chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is often limited by nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea; these side-effects persist long after treatment. The effects of 5-FU on enteric neurons have not been studied and may provide insight into the mechanisms underlying 5-FU-induced gastrointestinal dysfunction. Methods Balb/c mice received intraperitoneal injections of […]
