Interleukin-22 promotes papillary thyroid cancer cell migration and invasion through microRNA-595/Sox17 axis

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοThyroid Disorders by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 3 δευτερόλεπτα
Abstract Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is an inflammatory cytokine mainly produced by activated Th17 and Th22 cells. The data presented here demonstrate that IL-22 induced the migration and invasion of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) cells. MicroRNA expression analysis and functional studies indicated that IL-22-mediated migration and invasion is positively regulated by miR-595. Further mechanistic studies revealed that sex-determining region Y-box 17 (Sox17) is directly targeted by miR-595. We then demonstrated that IL-22 regulated migration and invasion of PTC cells via inhibiting Sox17 ... περισσότερα »

Efficacy of nasal corticosteroid in preventing regrowth after adenoidectomy: One of the most frequent reasons of nasal obstruction and sleep apnea in pediatrics is adenoid hypertrophy. Remaining adenoid tissue can reoccur following hypertrophied adenoid removal and a second operation may be needed. Nasal corticosteroids are utilized in order to reduce adenoid hypertrophy and eliminate adenoidectomy operation. The purpose of our study is to assess the effect of nasal corticosteroid administration after adenoidectomy on adenoid regrowth and symptom scores.

[image: image]In cranial and spinal nerve ganglia, both axotomized primary sensory neurons without regeneration (axotomy-nonregenerative neurons) and spared intact primary sensory neurons adjacent to axotomized neurons (axotomy-spared neurons) have been definitely shown to participate in pain transmission in peripheral neuropathic pain states. However, whether axotomized primary sensory neurons with regeneration (axotomy-regenerative neurons) would be integral components of neural circuits underlying peripheral neuropathic pain states remains controversial. In the present study, we ... περισσότερα »

Imidacloprid toxicity impairs spatial memory of echolocation bats through neural apoptosis in hippocampal CA1 and medial entorhinal cortex areas

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 45 δευτερόλεπτα
[image: image]It has been reported that the decimation of honey bees was because of pesticides of imidacloprid. The imidacloprid is a wildly used neonicotinoid insecticide. However, whether imidacloprid toxicity interferes with the spatial memory of echolocation bats is still unclear. Thus, we compared the spatial memory of Formosan leaf-nosed bats, Hipposideros terasensis, before and after chronic treatment with a low dose of imidacloprid. We observed that stereotyped flight patterns of echolocation bats that received chronic imidacloprid treatment were quite different from their o...περισσότερα »

Patterns of impaired oral health-related quality of life dimensions

Summary How dental patients are affected by oral conditions can be described with the concept of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). This concept intends to make the patient experience measurable. OHRQoL is multidimensional, and *Oral Function*, *Oro-facial Pain*, *Oro-facial Appearance* and *Psychosocial Impact* were suggested as its four dimensions and consequently four scores are needed for comprehensive OHRQoL assessment. When only the presence of dimensional impact is measured, a pattern of affected OHRQoL dimensions would describe in a simple way how oral condition...περισσότερα »

Purification, characterization, and function analysis of an extracellular {beta}-glucosidase from elongating stipe cell walls in Coprinopsis cinerea

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 1 ώρα
A β-glycoside hydrolase was isolated from cell walls material in *Coprinopsis cinerea* elongating stipes. By analysis of SDS-PAGE, MALDI-TOF/TOF MS and substrate specificity, this enzyme was characterized as an extracellular β-glucosidase which is a trimer consisting of three homo-subunits. β-glucosidase did not degrade β-glucans with modified-ends, whereas it hydrolyzed various β-glucans with free ends and related oligosaccharides with β-1,3-, β-1,4-, or β-1,6-linkages. Although this β-glucosidase possesses glycosyltransferase activity on laminarioligosaccharides, it did not tran...περισσότερα »

Heme sensing in Bacillus thuringiensis: a supplementary HssRS-regulated heme resistance system

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 1 ώρα
Several Gram-positive pathogens scavenge host-derived heme to satisfy their nutritional iron requirement. However, heme is a toxic molecule capable of damaging the bacterial cell. Gram-positive pathogens within the phylum Firmicutes overcome heme toxicity by sensing heme through HssRS, a two-component system that regulates the heme detoxification transporter HrtAB. Here we show that heme sensing by HssRS and heme detoxification by HrtAB occur in the insect pathogen *Bacillus thuringiensis*. We find that in *Bacillus thuringiensis*, HssRS directly regulates an operon, *hrmXY*, enco...περισσότερα »

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 1 ώρα
Two new alginate lyase genes, *oalY1* and *oalY2*, have been cloned from the newly isolated marine bacterium *Halomonas* sp. QY114 and expressed in *Escherichia coli*. The deduced alginate lyases, OalY1 and OalY2, belonged to polysaccharide lyase (PL) family 17 and showed less than 45% amino acid identity with all of the characterized oligoalginate lyases. OalY1 and OalY2 exhibited the highest activities at 45°C and 50°C respectively. Both of them showed more than 50% of the highest activity at 60°C, and 20% at 80°C. In addition, they were salt-dependent and salt-tolerant since bot... περισσότερα »

A psychoacoustic model of the voicesourcespectrum

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Modeling the voice source in terms of spectral slopes [image: cm_sbs_024_plain.png] A psychoacoustic model of the voicesourcespectrum is proposed. The model is characterized by four spectral slope parameters: the difference in amplitude between the first two harmonics (H1–H2), the second and fourth harmonics (H2–H4), the fourth harmonic and the harmonic nearest 2 kHz in frequency (H4–2 kHz), and the harmonic nearest 2 kHz and that nearest 5 kHz (2 kHz–5 kHz). As a step toward model validation, experiments were conducted to establish the acoustic and perceptual independence of these ... περισσότερα »

Abstract Background Robot-assisted manipulation is promising for solving problems such as understaffing and the risk of infection in gastro-intestinal endoscopy. However, the commonly used friction rollers in few existing systems have a potential risk of deforming flexible endoscopes for non-uniform clamping. Methods This paper presents a robotic system for a standard flexible endoscope and focuses on a novel gastroscope intervention mechanism (GIM), which provides circumferentially uniform clamping with an airbag. The GIM works with a relay-on mechanism in a way similar to manua...περισσότερα »

The Relationship Between Optic Nerve Sheath Decompression Failure and Intracranial Pressure in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension.

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 2 ώρες
Background: To our knowledge, there are no studies of patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) that address the relationship between level of intracranial pressure (ICP) and likelihood of progressive visual loss despite uncomplicated optic nerve sheath decompression (ONSD). This study investigated whether patients with IIH undergoing ONSD had a higher risk of surgical failure if opening pressure (OP) on lumbar puncture was >=50 cm H2O compared to those with OP =50 cm H2O, 6 (15%) had progressive visual loss after uncomplicated ONSD, vs 6 (4.5%) of 134 patients with a... περισσότερα »

Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome in Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma.

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 2 ώρες
Adult-onset opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) has been associated with multiple cancers, most commonly small-cell lung carcinoma and breast adenocarcinoma. A 53-year-old woman who presented with OMS was found to have primary central nervous system (CNS) diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. OMS has been described in only 5 cases with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), and this is only the third reported case of OMS in NHL limited to the CNS. Although the paraneoplastic antibody panel was negative, we presume that the OMS was a paraneoplastic manifestation. Antineoplastic and anti-immune therapy... περισσότερα »

Strabismus Surgery in Patients With Ocular Neuromyotonia: Potential Unmasking of the Condition and Effective Management Tool.

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΝευρολογία κ' ΝευροχειρουργικήΠριν από 2 ώρες
Background: Ocular neuromyotonia (ONM) is a rare motility disorder in which paroxysms of tonic extraocular muscle contraction from abnormal ocular motor nerve firing result in episodic diplopia and strabismus. Medical therapy with membrane-stabilizing agents has varied success. A surgical approach to treatment has not yet been described. We report the outcomes of strabismus surgery in patients with ONM. Methods: We describe 3 patients with sixth nerve paresis and ONM of the affected lateral rectus muscle who underwent strabismus surgery. All patients had a history of radiation thera...περισσότερα »

Optic Nerve Fenestration in a Patient With the Syndrome of Acquired Hyperopia and Choroidal Folds.

We performed bilateral optic nerve sheath fenestrations on a patient with the syndrome of acquired hyperopia and choroidal folds. We are unaware of previous reports of this procedure being performed in this clinical setting. Despite the incomplete resolution of his posterior segment findings postoperatively, the results of the procedure, along with an understanding of the relevant anatomy, may help to shed light on the pathogenesis of this rare entity. CDK4 inhibitors and tumor cell senescence

PML plays a role in the senescence tumor suppressor response of normal cells to oncogenic stress. However, tumor cell lines fail to engage a complete senescence in response to PML activation. Here, we show that the cyclin-dependent kinases CDK4 and CDK6 impair the senescence response to PML expression. Decreasing CDK functions by RNA interference, CDK […]

Membrane IL-1{alpha} inhibits HCC development

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a worldwide health problem with limited treatment options and poor prognosis. Inflammation associated with liver injury and hepatocyte regeneration can lead to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and eventually, HCC. Interleukin-1α (IL-1α) is one of the most important inflammatory cytokines involved in inflammation and tumor development. IL-1α presents as multiple forms in vivo, including […]

C9b regulates the NF-{kappa}B pathway

Alternate RNA processing of caspase-9 generates the splice variants caspase 9a (C9a) and caspase 9b (C9b). C9b lacks a domain present in C9a, revealing a tumorigenic function that drives the phenotype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. In this study, we elucidated the mechanistic underpinnings of the malignant character of this splice isoform. In […]
