ABSTRACT Introduction In Chile there are 4 universities with postgraduate programs in Otorhinolaryngology. The national organism that regulates postgraduate education in Medicine (APICE) recommends a minimal number of surgeries to be performed during the training, these suggestions were developed by a group of experts. Aim The objective of this paper is to explore the accomplishment of these minimal number of surgeries by the graduates of the Otorhinolaryngology Program from Universidad de Chile in the last 10 years. Material and method The surgical portafolio from the students graduated between 2006 and 2016 were reviewed. The following data was registered: year of completion of the program, surgery, kind of participation (surgeon or not), and academic location. Results In the period 77 physicians completed the program, eleven of them were excluded. The total analysis of 66 portafolios revealed that none of them accomplished a 100% of the minimal requirements suggested by APICE. Conclusions None of the graduates from the Otorhinolaryngology Program from Universidad de Chile in the last 10 years has fulfilled in 100% the requirements.

Bola fúngica de cavidades paranasales. Serie de casos

ABSTRACT Introduction A fungus ball (FB) is a non-invasive fungal sinusitis, consisting of extramucosal accumulation of dense fungal hyphae conglomerates, located in paranasal sinuses. It generally affects immunocompetent women. Aim To describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment in a series of patients diagnosed with FB of paranasal sinuses. Material and method Retrospective descriptive study regarding all patients with a histopathologic diagnosis of FB, who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in our institution between 2010 and 2016. Results Twenty patients (15 women, 5 men) were included, with a mean age at diagnosis of 64 years (35-86 years). Most were immunocompetent (85%). Facial pain was the most frequent symptom (8/20). All patients were studied with a sinus CT, finding paranasal calcifications in 70%. It predominantly involved the maxillary (12/20), and sphenoid sinus (6/20). All patients were treated with ESS, with a combined Caldwell Luc approach in only 3 of them. Intraoperative cultures were negative in 75% of patients. Conclusions Sinus FB has a non-specific clinical presentation. CT findings help suspect it, and it is confirmed with a histopathological study, given the poor efficiency of cultures. ESS is the diagnostic-therapeutic procedure of choice, with a low local recurrence rate.

Perfil epidemiológico de los pacientes con cuerpos extraños en el Servicio de Otorrinolaringología del Hospital Central de Maputo observados de 1983 a 2009

ABSTRACT Introduction In developing countries, the problem of foreign bodies (FB) in ENT Services is poorly studied and the literature related to the subject is rare. This study was performed to characterize the epidemiological profile in patients treated with FB in ENT Department/Maputo Central Hospital (MCH) (1983-2009 period). Aim This study was performed to characterize the epidemiological profile in patients treated with foreign bodies in ENT Department of Maputo Central Hospital (MCH) in the 1983-2009 period. Material and Method A cross-sectional study was performed using the retrospective data from patients with FB treated at MCH. Demographic data were collected on FB, their anatomical location, any treatment, clinical complications among others. The data were processed using the SPSS-v15. Descriptive results were presented in tables and graphs. Results We included a total of 4826 patients. The most affected population groups were males and children under 14 years. The most frequent FB were metals. The most common anatomical locations of FB was the external ear canal. Conclusions This study presents a unique collection covering a period of 26 years, constituting, therefore, an important source of information on the subject. This study demonstrates the magnitude of the problem in the pediatric age and presents the characteristics of the FB involved and their anatomical locations. The evidence of this study are important to inform clinical prevention and training strategies to deal with this issue at the level of primary health care. This study is important to inform about strategies to prevent it, but also useful in the formation of clinics to better deal with this type of patients at the level of primary health care.

Síndrome de Churg Strauss como diagnóstico diferencial de poliposis nasosinusal, a propósito de un caso

ABSTRACT Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a necrotizing systemic vasculitis of unknown etiology, which involves small and medium-sized vessels. It is characterized by three stages: prodromic, hypereosinophilic and systemic vasculitis. In the prodromal stage we can find otolaryngological manifestations (including chronic otitis media, allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps) that usually precede the proper manifestations of the vasculitis by years. Here, we report a 64-year old male patient with sinonasal polyps and biopsy compatible with CSS, being in the prodromal stage of the illness. Also, we present a review of this disease.

Angiofibroma de fosa temporal. Reporte de un caso

ABSTRACT Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is the most common benign tumor of the nasopharynx, representing 0.05% of total neoplasms of the head and neck. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas are rare entities described sporadically in the literature, being located mainly in the maxillary sinus. We present a case of an extra-nasopharyngeal fibroangioma located in the right temporal fossa followed by a literature review.

Síndrome de Susac. Caso clínico y revisión

ABSTRACT Susac syndrome (SS) is a rare autoimmune micronagiopathic disease, characterized by the clinical triad of, encephalopathy, visual impairment and hearing loss. It is a difficult entity to diagnose since most of the time it does not present itself with the classical clinical triad, and it may be confused with other differential diagnoses. One clinical case of a patient with SS is described, its clinical manifestations, diagnosis and initial treatment. In addition, a literature review about the multiple clinical findings and management of these disease.
