Aug 29th 2015, 05:57 Publication date: Available online 28 August 2015 Source:Revista de Logopedia, Foniatría y Audiología Author(s): Elvira Mendoza El trastorno de procesamiento auditivo (TPA) constituye una categoría diagnóstica reconocida especialmente por la American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) que ha generado un importante debate, sobre todo en lo que respecta a su diferenciación del TEL y de la dislexia. Se cuestionan los instrumentos diagnósticos, ya que en muchos casos se utilizan estímulos acústicos de señales del habla y no está claro si en el procesamiento de estas señales intervienen únicamente las habilidades auditivas y no otras, como atención, memoria o procesamiento lingüístico. Por el momento no disponemos de evidencia suficiente para considerar el trastorno de procesamiento auditivo como una categoría diagnóstica específica y diferente del TEL, entre otras razones por las medidas utilizadas en su determinación, no exentas de componentes lingüísticos y cognitivos. Con respecto a la intervención del procesamiento auditivo en niños con TEL tampoco existen investigaciones suficientes sobre su efectividad. Con la información disponible hasta el momento se puede afirmar que con este tipo de intervención los niños con TEL mejoran, en general, sus habilidades de procesamiento auditivo, aunque no afecta de forma significativa a sus habilidades lingüísticas. Se requiere un mayor cuerpo de investigación biológica, neurológica, neuropsicológica y logopédica para llegar a la clarificación, en su caso, de este trastorno.The auditory processing disorder (APD) is a diagnostic category specifically recognised by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), which has generated considerable debate, particularly as regards the differentiation of Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and dyslexia. Diagnostic tools are questioned, since in many cases acoustic stimuli of speech signals are used, and it is unclear whether the processing of these signals only involve auditory skills and not others, such as attention, memory and language processing. There is insufficient evidence to consider APD as a specific and different diagnostic category of SLI. This is due to several reasons, including that the measurements used to determine them are not exempt from linguistic and cognitive components. With regard to the intervention of auditory processing in children with SLI, there is not enough research on their effectiveness. With the information available at this time, it can be said that with this type of intervention, children with SLI improve in general auditory processing skills, although it does not improve their linguistic abilities significantly. In order to clarify this disorder, a greater biological, neurological, neuropsychological and speech therapy investigation body is required.
