High Expression of Intestinal Homing Receptor CD103 in Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma, Similar to 2 Other CD8+ T-Cell Lymphomas.: We investigated the expression of the [alpha]E[beta]7 integrin (CD103)-intestinal homing receptor of T-intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in 130 cases of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL). We detected CD103+ lymphoma cells in 55% (31/56) of mainly gastrointestinal (GI)-involved ATLL cases. Among them, lymphoma cells of 18 cases located in other involved organs had similar CD103 expression patterns. Histologically, we found (a) increased reactive IELs ...περισσότερα »

Intestinal Metaplasia is Present in Most if Not All Patients Who Have Undergone Endoscopic Mucosal Resection for Esophageal Adenocarcinoma.

Intestinal Metaplasia is Present in Most if Not All Patients Who Have Undergone Endoscopic Mucosal Resection for Esophageal Adenocarcinoma.: Barrett esophagus is presently defined in the United States by the presence of intestinal metaplasia in columnar-lined esophagus based on the premise that the risk for adenocarcinoma depends on the presence of intestinal metaplasia. Recently, arguments have been made that nonintestinalized cardiac epithelium is also at risk and should be included in the definition of Barrett esophagus, as it is in England and Japan. One of these arguments is th...περισσότερα »

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology - Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 λεπτό
Distinct Hypnotic Recoveries After Infusions of Methoxycarbonyl Etomidate and Cyclopropyl Methoxycarbonyl Metomidate: The Role of the Metabolite.: BACKGROUND: Methoxycarbonyl etomidate (MOC-etomidate) and cyclopropyl methoxycarbonyl metomidate (CPMM) are rapidly metabolized "soft" etomidate analogs. CPMM's duration of hypnotic effect is context insensitive, whereas MOC-etomidate's is not. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that CPMM's effect is context insensitive because, unlike MOC-etomidate, its metabolite fails to reach physiologically important concentrations in vivo even w... περισσότερα »

Interplay between Cellular and Molecular Inflammatory Mediators in Lung Cancer

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοΛοίμωξηΠριν από 57 δευτερόλεπτα
Inflammation is a component of the tumor microenvironment and represents the 7th hallmark of cancer. Chronic inflammation plays a critical role in tumorigenesis. Tumor infiltrating inflammatory cells mediate processes associated with progression, immune suppression, promotion of neoangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis, remodeling of extracellular matrix, invasion and metastasis, and, lastly, the inhibition of vaccine-induced antitumor T cell response. Accumulating evidence indicates a critical role of myeloid cells in the pathophysiology of human cancers. In contrast to the well-cha...περισσότερα »

Efficacy of Human Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells on Neonatal Bilirubin Encephalopathy in Rats

Abstract Kernicterus is a neurological syndrome associated with indirect bilirubin accumulation and damages to the basal ganglia, cerebellum and brain stem nuclei particularly the cochlear nucleus. To mimic haemolysis in a rat model such that it was similar to what is observed in a preterm human, we injected phenylhydrazine in 7-day-old rats to induce haemolysis and then infused sulfisoxazole into the same rats at day 9 to block bilirubin binding sites in the albumin. We have investigated the effectiveness of human adiposity-derived stem cells as a therapeutic paradigm for perinata... περισσότερα »

Understanding how differentiation is maintained: lessons from the Drosophila brain

Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοCell and Tissue Research by Alexandros G. SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Abstract The ability to maintain cells in a differentiated state and to prevent them from reprogramming into a multipotent state has recently emerged as a central theme in neural development as well as in oncogenesis. In the developing central nervous system (CNS) of the fruit fly *Drosophila*, several transcription factors were recently identified to be required in postmitotic cells to maintain differentiation, and in their absence, mature neurons undergo dedifferentiation, giving rise to proliferative neural stem cells and ultimately to tumor growth. In this review, we will highl... περισσότερα »

Dietary fat and corticosterone levels are contributing factors to meal anticipation

orlsfakianakisστοOtoRhinoLaryngology by Sfakianakis G.AlexandrosΠριν από 2 ώρες
Daily restricted access to food leads to the development of food anticipatory activity and metabolism, which depends upon an as yet unidentified food-entrainable oscillator(s). A pre-meal anticipatory peak in circulating hormones including corticosterone is elicited by daily restricted feeding. High fat feeding is associated with elevated levels of corticosterone with disrupted circadian rhythms and a… Continue reading Dietary fat and corticosterone levels are contributing factors to meal anticipation

Here we present software called *IgCoverage* for *in silico* evaluation of genomic coverage through GBS with an individual or a pair of restriction enzymes on one sequenced genome and report a new set of 21 restriction enzyme combinations that can be applied to enhance ... περισσότερα »

Genome-Wide Analysis of Transposon and Retroviral Insertions Reveals Preferential Integrations in Regions of DNA Flexibility

DNA transposons and retroviruses are important transgenic tools for genome engineering. An important consideration affecting the choice of transgenic vector is their insertion site preferences. Previous large-scale analyses of Ds transposon integration sites in plants were done on the basis of reporter gene expression or germline transmission, making it difficult to discern vertebrate integration preferences. Here, we compare over 1300 Ds transposon integration sites in zebrafish, with Tol2 transposon and retroviral integration sites. Genome-wide analysis shows that Ds integration... περισσότερα »
