Abstract In the past 10 years, autophagy has emerged as a crucial regulator of T-cell homeostasis, activation and differentiation. Through the ability to adjust the cell's proteome in response to different stimuli, different forms of autophagy have been shown to control T-cell homeostasis and survival. Autophagic processes can also determine the magnitude of the T-cell response to TCR engagement, by regulating the cellular levels of specific signaling intermediates and modulating the metabolic output in activated T cells. In this review we will examine the mechanisms that control ... περισσότερα »

Time-frequency analysis of the EEG mu rhythm as a measure of sensorimotor integration in the latter stages of swallowing
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
The ability to swallow is vital to human survival. An efficient swallow requires precise neuromuscular control over three distinct phases (Ertekin and Aydogdu, 2003; Hamdy et al., 1999; Langmore, 2001; Mosier and Bereznaya, 2001; Furlong et al., 2003; Logemann, 1998; Shaw and Martino 2013). During the oral phase, food and/or liquid are transformed into a bolus that subsequently is propelled posteriorly toward the pharynx (Logemann, 1998). Once the bolus reaches the anterior faucial pillars, the pharyngeal phase of the swallow triggers to maneuver the bolus through the pharynx while ... περισσότερα »
Assessment of the upper motor neurone in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

The term amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was first coined by Charcot, who postulated the primacy of the upper motor neuron in ALS pathogenesis (Charcot et al., 1869) with loss of Betz cells in the motor cortex being a well-recognized pathological feature (Kaufmann et al., 2004). The clinical diagnosis of classical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is determined by identification of progressive dysfunction of both cortical (‘upper’) and spinal (‘lower’) motor neurons across multiple body regions (chiefly limb and bulbar), much of which was encapsulated by the El Escorial criteria (Br... περισσότερα »
Voluntary Physical Activity Abolishes the Proliferative Tumor Growth Microenvironment Created by Adipose Tissue in Animals Fed a High Fat Diet
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
The molecular mechanisms behind the obesity-breast cancer association may be regulated via adipokine secretion by white adipose tissue. Specifically, adiponectin (ADIPO) and leptin (LEP) are altered with adiposity and exert antagonistic effects on cancer cell proliferation. We set out to determine whether altering adiposity in-vivo via high fat diet (HFD) feeding changed the tumor growth supporting nature of adipose tissue and if voluntary physical activity (VPA) could ameliorate these HFD-dependent effects. We show that conditioned media (CM) created from the adipose tissue of HFD... περισσότερα »
No effect of elevated operating lung volumes on airway function during variable workrate exercise in asthmatic humans

In asthmatic adults, airway caliber fluctuates during variable intensity exercise such that bronchodilation (BD) occurs with increased workrate whereas bronchoconstriction (BC) occurs with decreased workrate. We hypothesized that increased lung mechanical stretch would prevent BC during such variable workrate exercise. Ten asthmatic and ten non-asthmatic subjects completed two exercise trials on a cycle ergometer. Both trials included a 28-minute exercise bout consisting of alternating four minute periods at workloads equal to 40 (Low) and 70% (High) peak power output. During one ...περισσότερα »

Following pneumonectomy (PNX), two separate mechanical forces act on the remaining lung: parenchymal stress caused by lung expansion, and microvascular distension and shear caused by increased perfusion. We previously showed that parenchymal stress and strain explains approximately one-half of overall compensation; the remainder was presumptively attributed to perfusion-related factors. In this study we directly tested the hypothesis that perturbation of regional pulmonary perfusion modulates post-PNX lung growth. The effect of aging and exercise on the tendon
Alexandros G. SfakianakisστοPhysiology by Alexandros G.SfakianakisΠριν από 1 ώρα
Here we review the literature on how tendons respond and adapt to ageing and exercise. With respect to aging, there are considerable changes early in life, but this seems to be maturation rather than aging per se. In vitro data indicate that aging is associated with a decreased potential for cell proliferation and a reduction in the number of stem/progenitor like cells. Further, there is persuasive evidence that turnover in the core of the tendon after maturity is very slow or absent. Tendon fibril diameter, collagen content, and whole tendon size appear to be largely unchanged wit... περισσότερα »

Tracheostomies are often used in operations for cancer of the head and neck,1–3 and bleeding is a recognised complication,3,4 in about 5% of patients.5 To control this postoperatively, it is necessary to directly see and gain access to the site of the haemorrhage, but the tracheostomy tube is often in the way. from #ΓναθοΧειρουργική via xlomafota13 on Inoreader http://ift.tt/1STfrD8 via IFTTT

We retrospectively reviewed the management at our centre of 25 patients with Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the head and neck. We obtained details of the operation, including wide local excision, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SNB), neck dissection, postoperative radiotherapy, and clinical outcomes, from patients’ records. All patients were white, 11 were men and 14 women, mean age at presentation 81 years (range 67-90). At the time of diagnosis, 18 patients had stage I disease, and 7 stage II disease. from #ΓναθοΧειρουργική via xlomafota13 on Inoreader http://ift.tt/1ZlpBQE via IFTTT

[image: sleep3037-fig-0001.sml] • Daytime hypercapnia and nocturnal hypoxia are independent predictors of early continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) failure in patients with the obstructive sleep apnea-continuous positive airway pressure overlap syndrome• An increase of CT90% by 1% (ie, prolongation of time with SpO2 <90% by 1% of total sleep time) increases the likelihood of CPAP failure by ~6%• Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) therapy effectively alleviates hypercapnia in patients with primary CPAP failure• To increase sleep laboratory personnel alertness towards th...περισσότερα »

Publication date: Available online 4 May 2016 *Source:*American Journal of Otolaryngology Author(s): Zachary Farhood, Paul R. Lambert Multiple options exist to manage Ménière's disease (MD), ranging from dietary modifications to ablative surgery. Corticosteroids (CS) have long been used to manage MD, but their exact mechanism for disease alleviation is relatively uncertain. Glucocorticoid receptors have been shown to exist in the human inner ear and several studies propose influence mechanisms of blood flow, fluid regulation, and ion regulation, with recent evidence describing the l... περισσότερα »
