Quality Improvement In the Otolaryngology Morbidity and Mortality Conference

The modern definition of a fully trained, competent otolaryngologist not only includes technical skill and medical knowledge, but also professionalism, sound judgment and the desire to continually improve the quality of patient care. The Otolaryngology Milestones Project, a collaboration between the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto), detailed levels of accomplishment for resident training in the 6 core competencies. These systems were developed to minimize the variability in graduate medical education and ensure well-rounded education of resident. However, they also present a conundrum as to how to specifically teach and measure resident progression in the nontraditional competencies. In this issue of JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery Laury et al present an innovative curriculum to incorporate these competencies into resident education.
