AimThe aim of this study was to analyse and compare the healing of scalpel and diathermy incision wounds in oral mucosa.MethodsThis is a prospective split-mouth study conducted from January 2015 to April 2017 among patients undergoing either Lefort 1 or anterior maxillary osteotomy or both. The study groups were classified based on the different techniques used to make the incision [Group A, incision made by scalpel; Group B, incision made by diathermy]. The wound healing was assessed on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 10th postoperative days using the Southampton scoring system. Data was statistically analysed using student's t-test for continuous variables, χ2 test for categorical variables and a p value < 0.05 was considered significant.ResultsOf the 113 participants who were included in the study, the age range was between 16 and 35 years and 50.4 % were men. Post-operative complications of wound healing were 68.1% (n=77) and 77% (n=87) in group A and group B respectively. Wound healing showed statistical significant difference between both techniques (p<0.001).ConclusionThe findings of the present study suggest that wound caused by scalpel incisions healed better than that compared to diathermy incisions in the oral mucosa.
