Diffuse liver uptake may be seen on post-therapy scans and is indicative of thyroxine production. Thyroid hormone (T3, T4) is metabolized in the liver and activity can be seen there after 3–7 days. In post-ablation patients, liver activity suggests that I-131 has been incorporated into thyroid hormone by functioning metastases or residual thyroid activity in the neck.
