Equitable vaccination against human papillomavirus: the road ahead

For those of us who treat cancer it has been impossible to understand the resistance against gender-neutral vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV). The incidence of squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck that are potentially associated with HPV has been rising, particularly in men.1,2 Cancers other than cervical cancers that may be related are also increasing in incidence. Boys have not been vaccinated by the NHS, unlike girls who are covered by a national vaccination programme.
