Effectiveness of workplace interventions in the prevention of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders and symptoms: an update of the evidence
The burden of disabling musculoskeletal pain and injuries (musculoskeletal disorders, MSDs) arising from work-related causes in many workplaces remains substantial. There is little consensus on the most appropriate interventions for MSDs. Our objective was to update a systematic review of workplace-based interventions for preventing and managing upper extremity MSD (UEMSD). We followed a systematic review process developed by the Institute for Work & Health and an adapted best evidence synthesis. 6 electronic databases were searched (January 2008 until April 2013 inclusive) yieldi...περισσότερα »

This study aimed to examine the association between bilateral high-frequency hearing loss and the presence of coronary heart disease (CHD). Methods This study included 5223 participants aged 20–69 years who participated in the audiometry examination of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2004. Bilateral high-frequency hearing loss was defined as the average high-frequency (3, 4 and 6 kHz) hearing threshold ≥25 dB in both ears. CHD was defined as self-report...περισσότερα »
Author response: Extended follow-up of lung cancer and non-malignant respiratory disease mortality among California diatomaceous earth workers
We will address the comments offered by Mundt and Boffetta1 on our manuscript describing findings from an update of mortality among California diatomaceous earth (DE) workers.2 We regard the sustained dose–response trends for lung cancer and non-malignant respiratory disease (NMRD) (tables 3 and 4, respectively) as the most important findings regarding risks associated with crystalline silica. The reduction of overall mortality for these outcomes, indicated by reduced standardised mortality ratios (SMR), is more likely to be a 'depletion of susceptibles' phenomenon than a 'balanci...περισσότερα »

The response to nasal allergen provocation with grass pollen is reduced in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis and grass sensitization
The response to nasal allergen provocation with grass pollen is reduced in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis and grass sensitization: Abstract Background The majority of grass pollen sensitized rhinitis patients develops allergic symptoms when exposed to the causal allergen and shows a positive nasal allergen provocation test (NAPT). Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) patients, also characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and local IgE production, can suffer from comorbid inhalant allergy, but may show a different response to allergens. ... περισσότερα »
The role of IgE recognition in allergic reactions to Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid
The role of IgE recognition in allergic reactions to Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid: Abstract Betalactam (BL) antibiotics are the drugs most frequently involved in IgE-mediated reactions. The culprit BL varies according to consumption patterns, with amoxicillin (AX) more prevalent in Southern Europe and penicillin V in Scandinavian countries. Nowadays, the combination of AX and clavulanic acid (CLV), is the most highly consumed BL containing medicine worldwide. Both BLs, AX and CLV, can independently be involved in reactions, which poses a diagnostic challenge. In patients with imm... περισσότερα »

Pressor Response to Noradrenaline in the Setting of Septic Shock: Anything New under the Sun—Dexmedetomidine, Clonidine? A Minireview
Pressor Response to Noradrenaline in the Setting of Septic Shock: Anything New under the Sun—Dexmedetomidine, Clonidine? A Minireview: Progress over the last 50 years has led to a decline in mortality from ≈70% to ≈20% in the best series of patients with septic shock. Nevertheless, refractory septic shock still carries a mortality close to 100%. In the best series, the mortality appears related to multiple organ failure linked to comorbidities and/or an intense inflammatory response: shortening the period that the subject is exposed to circulatory instability may further lower morta... περισσότερα »

Debates in allergy medicine: food intolerance does not exist
Background: The term "intolerance" is not mentioned in the World Allergy Organization (WAO) document on allergy nomenclature. "Intolerance" has been used to describe some non-immunological diseases. However, pediatric gastroenterologists mix allergy and intolerance, e.g. by using the term "cow's milk protein allergy/intolerance (CMPA/I)", lumping together all types of mechanisms for not tolerating cow's milk. The basis for this mix is the fact that double-blind oral food challenges are time-consuming and expensive. Therefore, cow's milk exclusion and reintroduction is proposed to ...περισσότερα »

Invited Commentary: Troubling Trends in Birth Weight
Birth weight is a strong predictor of the health of newborns. Consequently, the report by Catov et al. in this issue of the *Journal* (*Am J Epidemiol*. 2015;000(00):0000–0000), in which they showed downward trends in birth weights in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, hospital from 1997 to 2011, raises concerns. The widening gap reported between birth weights of babies born to white and African-American women could correspond to a widening gap in actual health outcomes. However, if the relation between birth weight and health outcomes is not causal, these trends may be epiphenomena of li...περισσότερα »
Race Disparities and Decreasing Birth Weight: Are All Babies Getting Smaller?
The mean infant birth weight in the United States increased for decades, but it might now be decreasing. Given race disparities in fetal growth, we explored race-specific trends in birth weight at Magee-Womens Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1997 to 2011. Among singleton births delivered at 37–41 weeks (*n* = 70,607), we evaluated the proportions who were small for gestational age and large for gestational age and changes in mean birth weights over time. Results were stratified by maternal race/ethnicity. Since 1997, the number of infants born small for their gestational ...περισσότερα »

Improving Cell Engraftment in Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy
Improving Cell Engraftment in Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy: Myocardial infarction (MI) affects millions of people worldwide. MI causes massive cardiac cell death and heart function decrease. However, heart tissue cannot effectively regenerate by itself. While stem cell therapy has been considered an effective approach for regeneration, the efficacy of cardiac stem cell therapy remains low due to inferior cell engraftment in the infarcted region. This is mainly a result of low cell retention in the tissue and poor cell survival under ischemic, immune rejection and inflammatory condition... περισσότερα »

An in vivo model for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation: an analysis of histological, spectroscopic, colorimetric and clinical traits
Summary Background Acne vulgaris is a common condition that occurs in all skin types. Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is often associated with acne in patients of darker skin types, making it a common complaint in dermatology offices. Despite this, there is limited understanding of and effective treatment options for PIH. Objectives The study objective was to validate an *in vivo* model for PIH and to compare the clinical, histological and spectroscopic characteristics of artificially induced PIH and acne-induced PIH. Methods A nonblinded, nonrandomized pilot study was ...περισσότερα »
Asthma education material for children and their families; a global survey of current resources

Polyploidy Formation in Doxorubicin-Treated Cancer Cells Can Favor Escape from Senescence
Cancer cells can undergo stress-induced premature senescence, which is considered to be a desirable outcome of anticancer treatment. However, the escape from senescence and cancer cell repopulation give rise to some doubts concerning the effectiveness of the senescence-induced anticancer therapy. Similarly, it is postulated that polyploidization of cancer cells is connected with disease relapse. We postulate that cancer cell polyploidization associated with senescence is the culprit of atypical cell divisions leading to cancer cell regrowth. from #ORL-AlexandrosSfakianakis via sim... περισσότερα »

Gelsolin promotes cell growth and invasion through the upregulation of p-AKT and p-P38 pathway in osteosarcoma
Abstract The gelsolin (GSN) has been involved in the regulation of tumor formation and development, but the biological role of GSN in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma (OS) has not been well characterized. In this study, we show that high expression of GSN was observed in OS tissues and correlated with tumor size, advanced Enneking stage, and poor patient prognosis. Knockdown of GSN significantly inhibited cell proliferation and invasiveness in the OS cell lines. Furthermore, stable overexpression of GSN in OS cells resulted in a significant increase in cell growth and motility with... περισσότερα »
