Abstract Spread of head and neck cancer along the cranial nerves is often a lethal complication of this tumour. Current treatment options include surgical resection and/or radiotherapy, but recurrence is a frequent event suggesting that our understanding of this tumour and its microenvironment is incomplete. In this study, we have analysed the nature of the perineural tumour microenvironment by immunohistochemistry with particular focus on immune cells and molecules, which might impair anti-tumour immunity. Serum elevation of B lymphocyte stimulator does not increase regulatory B cells in glioblastoma patients undergoing immunotherapy
Abstract Regulatory B cells that secrete IL-10 (IL-10+ Bregs) represent a suppressive subset of the B cell compartment with prominent anti-inflammatory capacity, capable of suppressing cellular and humoral responses to cancer and vaccines. B lymphocyte stimulator (BLyS) is a key regulatory molecule in IL-10+ Breg biology with tightly controlled serum levels. However, BLyS levels can be drastically altered upon chemotherapeutic intervention. We have previously shown that serum BLyS levels are elevated, and directly associated, with increased antigen-specific antibody titers in patie... περισσότερα »

Poly(I:C) potentiates Bacillus Calmette–Guérin immunotherapy for bladder cancer
Abstract Non-specific immunotherapy consisting of intravesical instillation of Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) is currently the best available treatment to prevent non-muscle-invasive bladder tumor recurrence and progression. This treatment however is suboptimal, and more effective immunotherapeutic approaches are needed. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a major role in the activation of the immune system in response to pathogens and danger signals but also in anti-tumor responses. IL-6 down-regulates HLA class II expression and IL-12 production of human dendritic cells to impair activation of antigen-specific CD4 + T cells
Abstract Immunosuppression in tumor microenvironments critically affects the success of cancer immunotherapy. Here, we focused on the role of interleukin (IL)-6/signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) signaling cascade in immune regulation by human dendritic cells (DCs). IL-6-conditioned monocyte-derived DCs (MoDCs) impaired the presenting ability of cancer-related antigens. Effects of Erythropoietin on Adipose Tissue: A Possible Strategy in Refilling
[image: image]Background: The increased resorption and the difficulty of the fat graft take following autologous fat transplantation procedure are associated with reduced fat tissue revascularization and increased apoptosis of adipose cells. We suppose that the lipofilling procedure induces an inflammatory environment within the fat graft mass, whose evolution influences the efficacy of autologous fat graft survival. Intrinsic astrocyte heterogeneity influences tumor growth in glioma mouse models
Abstract The influence of cellular origin on glioma pathogenesis remains elusive. We previously showed that mutations inactivating *Rb* and *Pten* and activating *Kras* transform astrocytes and induce tumorigenesis throughout the adult mouse brain. However, it remained unclear whether astrocyte subpopulations were susceptible to these mutations. We therefore used genetic lineage tracing and fate mapping in adult conditional, inducible genetically engineered mice to monitor transformation of GFAP and GLAST astrocytes and immunofluorescence to monitor cellular composition of the tum... περισσότερα »

However, BLyS levels can […]

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a major role in the activation of the immune system in response to pathogens […]

Interferon (IFN)-γ production attenuated by CD4+ T […]

Trigeminocardiac reflex and haemodynamic changes during Le Fort I osteotomy
The Le Fort I osteotomy is performed under general anaesthesia and specific haemodynamic conditions, i.e. hypotensive general anaesthesia. This study assessed the incidence of the trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) during the different stages of the Le Fort I osteotomy. Forty-seven patients requiring a Le Fort I osteotomy were included. General anaesthesia was induced. In terms of haemodynamic changes, each patient's oxygen saturation (SpO2), mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and electrocardiogram (ECG) were monitored by SADAAT Monitoring System and recorded during the dif...περισσότερα »
Three-dimensional maxillary and mandibular regional superimposition using cone beam computed tomography: a validation study
This study aimed to validate a novel method for fast regional superimposition of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The method can be used with smaller field of view scans, thereby allowing for a lower radiation dose. This retrospective study used two dry skulls and secondary data from 15 patients who had more than one scan taken using the same machine. Two observers tested two types of regional voxel-based superimposition: maxillary and mandibular. The registration took 10–15s. Three-dimensional surface models of the maxillas and mandibles were generated via standardized... περισσότερα »

Two-week rule in head and neck cancer 2000-14: a systematic review
The fast-track system in the UK for patients with suspected cancer – the two-week rule - states that if cancer is suspected there should be a maximum of 14 days between referral from primary care and consultation with a specialist. This approach is valued by patients, ensures a universal standard of diagnosis, and speeds up the overall management of cancer. However, some say that the rule has had little or no effect on survival, results in a diagnosis of cancer in only a small proportion of patients referred, and is expensive. from #ΓναθοΧειρουργική via xlomafota13 on Inoreader ht... περισσότερα »
Early and gender-specific differences in spinal cord mitochondrial function and oxidative stress markers in a mouse model of ALS
Abstract Introduction Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease with a gender bias towards major prevalence in male individuals. Several data suggest the involvement of oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in its pathogenesis, though differences between genders have not been evaluated. For this reason, we analysed features of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, as well as mitochondrial chain complex enzyme activities and protein expression, lipid profile, and protein oxidative stress markers, in the Cu,Zn superoxide dismutase with the G93A mutation (hS... περισσότερα »
Farewell to GBM-O: Genomic and transcriptomic profiling of glioblastoma with oligodendroglioma component reveals distinct molecular subgroups
Abstract Introduction Glioblastoma with oligodendroglioma component (GBM-O) was recognized as a histologic pattern of glioblastoma (GBM) by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2007 and is distinguished by the presence of oligodendroglioma-like differentiation. To better understand the genetic underpinnings of this morphologic entity, we performed a genome-wide, integrated copy number, mutational and transcriptomic analysis of eight (seven primary, primary secondary) cases. Results Three GBM-O samples had *IDH1* (p.R132H) mutations; two of these also demonstrated 1p/19q co-dele... περισσότερα »
